God Soup, as much as I agree with you on how we have moved away from joint family setups and taken to nuclear setup and also adopted single parenthood, I have to say this that there are many who feel the joint set up was partly ..claustrophobic, for the lack of better word. I mean why should I as an individual be answerable to my grandparents, or uncles, or aunts for what I do and who I am or for that matter who I hang out with. Idk, maybe with time my mentality may change, but for now, being answerable to people and having them around you, or being around them is just fine. Which is why the nuclear setup was adopted. So I see more pros to it than cons. And YES, living close by to your folks, just serves the entire purpose.

As for single parenthood, I think its mostly adopted as a convenience and in a survey I read a while back, it was stated that most Indian parents are having only one child as against the European or British parents. And I feel its mostly from the POV of easing the financial and parental responsibilities that the nuclear set of parents bore alone.

I am not condoning or condemning any preference or lifestyle. To each their own I guess. I am just brining in a different perspective.

Thank you Chick! I have also earned my place in my MIL's life. I had to work very hard to get here today but she has also changed because she realized how hard it is to adjust to in laws family when my SIL got married!

She calls me and my husband her strengths and my SIL and my daughter her weaknesses... 😆

When my daughter cries mom gets very upset...grandparents I tell you... 😆
