On a serious note - Yes, I had always thought that it degenerates with age. But I guess all sorts of conditions have exceptions...or maybe it is more common than I thought. Ignorance.
You would obviously know the significance of this. So how does on treat it? You had mentioned that you were taking Vit D supplements but since there isn't enough sunlight there, it's not working, is it?
We can make our own Vit D. Our body needs some little bit of UV light (from sunshine), and we produce enough Vit D for our need. So, if one is regularly exposed to sunshine, one normally doesn't develop a deficiency.
People who use sunscreens with very high SPF values, or those people who live in geographical locations where their exposure to sunshine is limited may often develop a deficiency of Vit. D.
In such cases, the normal course is to take supplements so that the level of Vit. D is restored. The emergency protocol can also extend to getting IV infusions. But one has to be careful with this because Vit. D is fat-soluble, and if it is consumed in excess it results in toxicity. I get my blood levels checked every few weeks, for no good reason actually (because no matter how much Vit. D I consume, I am always below the limit.)
Because of an as yet undiagnosed problem, even maximal doses of Vit D are not stabilizing the levels in my blood. I get an injection every week, and immediately the day after the blood values increase; but by the end of the week, I am again deficient.
@Sunshine: I don't know whether that will cure anything... In California also, I was deficient (in spite of all the sunny days)...
But - for all the years that I lived in India, I never had a problem. So, I keep thinking about how the problem is this place... But probably it isn't.
Anyhoo... Talking about this has made me self-conscious.
The two of you, GG and Kwerky - learn from my example and soak in some sunshine whenever you can. It is the giver of healthy bones and a pain-free life.
