@Saamya: See, we all know that the way MaNan have been written, they cannot be separated by any circumstance.. so obviously this is a hypothetical because she won't really be able to leave him so easily..
Anyway, about her thought process, it's very instinctive.. she's reacting to his worry (after that car convo- this 'confusion' is what she meant, she even verifies with him later in the classroom.."What are you confused about- Cabir?") and just wants to make it better.. she saw how he was torn between her and Fab5 even today as they rushed to save Cabir and she decided to take a step back.. basically she just decided to take herself out of the equation temporarily (in essence eliminate the 'having to choose' factor itself) so that he wouldn't have keep breaking himself into pieces trying to go n forth between them like she was watching him do even right now.. She is indirectly saying ki you need to focus on Fab5 right now and protect them and it would be easier if you didn't have to worry about being with me at this time.. just trying to stand by her NYE promise of protecting him Hamesha..
(But of course she is unaware of 2 key facts that limit her true understanding of the situation- first that Soha's main target is she herself not Manik or Fab5 and second that Manik is well aware of this so his protective instincts(love??!?) towards her also in conflict at this point)
As for why Mangalore, Arre this banda doesn't let her come back to the college alone, what are the chances she would be able to maintain any amount of distance from him if they were in the same city? She knows her over-possessive Monster well😆
@Anu: Of course everyone has a right to choose, irrespective of gender, this is not about that but the differing circumstances and perspectives.. Also Nandu is not 'imposing her will' rather enabling him to make a choice that he himself would have wanted to make (this is key).. also, this is not an 'assumption' on her part, he has just discussed his state of mind with her in the previous scene..
Him finding those videos and discovering the truth was a stroke of luck but if that wasn't the case (which is the viewpoint she is standing at), wouldn't he want to put Cabir (and his fragile state of mind) first (even over himself and his own hurt) in this scenario? If Nandu wasn't in actual danger from Psycho Soha (again Nandu remains unaware of this), then wouldn't Manik want to be focusing all his protective instincts only on Fab5 and their album at this time?
She is simply aiding him to do so by taking away the source of conflict (i.e. herself) because she doesn't want the burden (and guilt) of this choice to fall upon him completely.. that's all..
Obviously, 'walking away' isn't the perfect solution to this problem but then again we are in a position to understand that, Nandu isn't.
Anyway, the situations are dissimilar so 'removing himself' argument is not really justifiable here but in a nutshell, immediately after kissing a girl and getting her to promise you stars, prayers and 'trust' (that too 'Hamesha') you suddenly 'assume' that she would pick someone else if you weren't in the picture.. What does this indicate? That he did NOT in fact consider her state of mind at all when he made his choice.. even if he was unaware of the depth of their equation etc. fact of the matter is he did not take her POV into account at all... but his presumptions on her behalf are what make it so cruel because there were no external mitigating circumstances (as opposed to the current scenario- with Cabir's attempted suicide, Khurana's threat etc. all essential factors) that forced his hand except for his own all-consuming loyalty to his childhood friend..
Now because we (the audience) are all familiar with Manik's complexes et al, so his actions are in character and still understandable to us, but truth is, it was extremely unfair to Nandu. Period.
