Sanjana (Bipasha Basu) is hot and unemployed - the first is a fact, the latter an assumption given how frequently she irons her hair in a day so that her hair remains poker straight and silky at any and every moment in her day - has perennially red cheekbones, and married. A few minutes into Alone, Sanjana's husband Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) has sung her a song, fed her a cake in colours matching her white dress and red lips and we realise why Sanjana's standard expression is so, well, constipated. The woman misses her husband, who is obviously working hard to pay for rent, cake et al. A potentially relationship-changing conversation between the couple is cut short when a phone call informs them that Sanjana's mother has had a bimaari that has left her speechless and paralysed neck down.

The couple hurry to Sanjana's hometown in Kerala's backwaters. It's at this point that the film decides to share that Sanjana had a conjoined twin named Anjana who has died. Anjana was a true match to Sanjana, saying things like 'hum kabhi juda nahi honge' as a ten-year-old. The two were nearly on the track of claiming the title of creepiest kids ever (maybe they watched the wingwoman-cum-daughter in Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai?): they listened to a musical box which plays a tune fit for a Ram Gopal Verma film, drew the infinity sign in sand like lovestruck teens and so on. When teenaged Sanjana developed a crush for Kabir, now her husband and back then a chubby boy who saves the twins from bullies in school, things start souring. Anjana too has a crush on Kabir. However, since Anjana wears specs and has a more visible upper lip hair growth, chubby Kabir chooses Sanjana. Soon after, he runs off to London for higher education.

Meanwhile, the twins grow up to become Bipasha Basus and herein lies the confusion. Anjana, with Bipasha's abs and legs can't fathom why Kabir would choose the Sanjana, also with Bipasha's abs and legs. We understand her confusion. It's inexplicable. Even more explicable is the fact that the conjoined sisters would risk life threatening surgery for Karan Singh Grover, but that's what happens. Kabir is the reason the two sisters go under the knife and post-separation, Anjana dies. Sanjana goes on to pursue a sex life with a man with no hair on his body and bulging veins and scorpion tattoos painted on his meatloaf arms.

In the tradition of Indian ghosts who have traditionally been thoroughbred socialists, choosing the taikhana over thehaveli, Anjana's ghost too picks the outhouse adjoining the pretty family home. Maybe because it gets boring in the backwaters, Spooky Anjana starts plotting an elaborate plan for revenge.

Number one: Show ghost face to Mum and knock her out.
Number two: Get sister to come home, with Kabir in tow. When they're here, possess sister's body because hey, what could be easier? They have the same abs and legs.

We're almost tempted to say, neatly done. Especially since Kabir appears to like the possessed Sanjana more, judging by his flared nostrils, bulging veins, and dilated pupils. And why shouldn't he? The possessed Sanjana treats him the way a good Bengali does a nice, fat piece of hilsa slathered in mustard sauce. Okay, not really; we actually chew the bones with much more grace than possessed Sanjana chews Kabir's mouth. Maybe Anjana was just trying to kick a smoking habit and mistook Kabir's face for nicotine gum. It's probably difficult to tell such things apart from the afterlife.

Then, like in all good Indian ghost films, there's a bai who looks sad, scared and suspicious. No, it's not because of the liquor ban in Kerala. She knows Anjana's floating around. A puja is done and sure enough, the ghostly Anjana reveals her face. Since it's India, she looks very white. The rest of Alone is about convincing ghostly Anjana to mind her own business and party with her own kind.

Director Bhushan Patel has put in everything we associate with Indian horror films in this movie. Lights flicker and go out, doors creak pointlessly, swings swing by themselves; a jobless professor shows up to help fight the ghost; days end faster than night; defective fans help ghosts announce their presence.

The two things missing: fear and the ghost. The ghost in this ghost film could make Rahul Gandhi proud: she makes fewer appearances than Gandhi did in Lok Sabha. This is probably because Basu, the high priestess of "horrex", Basu, needs to be in baby doll negligees and lace shorts. Net result: Alone could be the best comic film Bollywood churns out this year.🤣

SPOILERS AHEAD

Alone isn't as horrifically bad as most Bollywood horror flicks tend to be. But that obviously is not saying much.

No matter how hard it tries, Alone, directed by Bhushan Patel of Ragini MMS fame, cannot break free from the constricted space that the genre allows.

This scare fest is a remake of a 2007 Thai horror film about two conjoined twins who are literally torn apart by jealousy and violence when both fall in love with the same man.

The conflict between the siblings transcends the here and now and takes on supernatural proportions as unrequited love assumes the shape of an angry spirit that returns to haunt the surviving sister and the man that she is married to.

To be fair, Alone delivers enough surface-level chills and thrills to please diehard fans of this form of entertainment.

But those that expect paranormal thrillers to open the doors to deeper layers of experience will find in this film nothing that could capture their imagination.

Sanjana and Anjana (Bipasha Basu) are Siamese twins that are physically and emotionally yoked. Their dependence on each other is deep and they vow to preserve their bond for eternity.

Their love is severely tested when the handsome Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) walks into their lives.

Cupid strikes both Sanjana and Anjana, but the man that they fall for reciprocates the feelings of only one of them.

The sisters are separated, one of them loses her life in the bargain, and the other flies away with Kabir to a life of marital bliss.

Years later, Kabir and his wife return to the family home when the girls' mother meets with an accident.

The spirit of the dead sister confined all these years to a room in the house grabs the opportunity to make her presence felt in ways that can only rattle the married couple.

But does the repeated appearance of the ghost and her malevolent shadow add up to genuine shocks for the audience?

The director, the cinematographer (Prakash Kutty) and the editor (Devendra Murdeshwar) try their best to whip up dread through a mix of dim lighting, spooky silhouettes and sounds, abrupt snips, skewed angles and other horror movie effects.

They do get it right on a few occasions, startling the audience out of the seats.

But once it becomes clear what on earth is going on in the house, the fear factor diminishes considerably and the rest of the film turns into a matter of merely going through the motions.

Especially those that have seen the Thai original will find Alone largely forced, if not entirely off target.

Bipasha is obviously not solitary figure in Alone. She plays both Sanjana and Anjana and has to carry a whole lot of weight on her shoulders. Inevitably, the effort shows all too often.
Her task is made all the more onerous because lead actor Karan Singh Grover, who flashes his well-toned body at the drop of a hat but does not appear quite as adept at conveying emotions, appears to sleepwalk through his role.

Alone is strictly for those that have an insatiable appetite for cinematic concoctions that serve up the dual dose of sex and horror.

Stay away if you have had enough of Bips and her deadly on-screen dalliances with the nether world.

Review: So what happens when conjoined twins Anjana and Sanjana (Bipasha Basu) make the same man, Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) the object of their desire? No prizes for guessing. The sisters end up despising one another and can hardly wait to go their separate ways (pun intended).

Unaware of the undercurrent of this emotion, Kabir, an advertising executive, (who ironically isn't shown doing a single day's work in the film), is working his butt off in Mumbai to give his dear wife Sanjana a luxurious lifestyle. However, wifey-dear is perpetually miffed with him for not spending any time with her. Tut, tut.

The couple feels that their shift from Kerala to Mumbai is pointless if they cannot even spend quality time together. And even though her mother (Neena Gupta) resides there, Sanjana's not keen on returning to Kerala because of some skeletons left behind.

When circumstances take this young couple to a sprawling mansion in God' own country, the spook fest begins.

Inspired by a 2007 Thai film by the same name, this Bollywood adaptation depends too heavily on creaking doors and a shrieking Sanjana to send a chill down your spine. She, who sees ghosts in every nook and corner of her childhood home, psyches herself and her wide-eyed husband. From taking his wife to a spiritual healer to making out with her in the idyllic locales, Kabir does everything in his power to drive away her fears.

When Sanjana saunters into the outhouse where Anjana and she played in their childhood, she is possessed by Anjana's spirit. Post interval, it's the ghost's turn to romance the hero with the chiselled physique. In fact, the ghost lucks out - unlike Sanjana in the first half, the ghost even shares raunchy scenes with Kabir. Till this point, Alone indulges you.

The lovemaking scenes between Bipasha and Karan are racy. The supernatural turn in the conflict between the sisters does give you goosebumps. But the limited expertise of director Bhushan Patel (1920, Evil Returns, Ragini MMS) and actress Bipasha Basu (Raaz, Creature 3D) - in spite of their many ventures in this genre - allows Alone to deliver only superficial chills. The prolonged climax though it is full of twists, leaves you cold because it is too contrived. When you scratch the surface, you don't end up scared shitless. And isn't that what Alone is meant to do?

P.S. Bipasha looks sensuous and Karan Singh Grover makes an interesting big screen debut.
