I see. What about religiously in hindusim? How does divorce work? If you have a religious marriage without registering it. Here in England usually you need it registered for the law to recognise it although it does with other religious marriages that have licensed officiates.

No, registration is compulsive these days. However those prior to the new law have to produce photographs and other evidences that clarify if the marriage was solemised.
Hinduism has too many cults and as such the saat pheras or the seven rounds are considered as a standard ritual decides the legality of such marriages.

But what about divorce in Hinduism? I don't know about that. I read that doing the seven pheras makes the wedding binding. All the different weddings can get confusing to a non hindu/indian

From religious point of view there is no provision for a divorce in Hinduism. It only has a legal dimension here in India.

Oh! That is interesting. So what do they suggest for couples who don't want to be together any more?

Nothing. There is no suggestion for such couples. In fact Hinduism boosted janam janam ka rishta until modern age brought its own set of complexities and the word divorce was forcefully inserted.

I see. I'm learning new things. What about relationships where it would be best for people to separate?

Hmm... things in India are very complicated. There are liberal families like us which allows divorces easily while some families will go to the extent of honor killing instead of a fair divorce.

So sad to hear; I will always say that there is no honour in killing of any form even if it is for self defence. I feel for those victims men and women who go through this. I cannot understand how people cannot see how wrong it is.
I wish for everyone to have supportive families. Thank you for the clarification about the marriage issue. I agree India is very complex. SRK's song Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani sums it up in a funny sort of way. Everywhere is like that sadly; good and bad and even people. 😊
