IMO, he never loved Asmara.

If he had loved her, he would have liked all of her, never would have had so many complaints, nor he dilly dallied so much in getting engaged to her.

He started slowly feeling for Kashaf, since they had that fight in the library.

That was a turning point., it made him respect her sub consciously, and he saw a person who he felt has the qualities he wanted in a life partner.

But over time...when they got together once more when they have started working, he started loving her...

This is what I understood.
