Madrassi or Madrasi is an ethnic slur used for people of South India, mostly by people of western, central and northern parts of the Indian subcontinent.^[1][2][3] The term originated during the British Raj to designate people from the southern parts of India which were then in the Madras Presidency. During the early 1990s, a term lungi hatao pungi bajao^[4] and Yendu gundu were coined by Shiv Sena in Maharashtra state of India to ridicule languages from south India.^[5] South Indians were derisively referred to as "yandugundu walas" and "lunghi walas".^[6][7][8] Bal Thackeray, the Marathi politician and founder of the Shiv Sena lampooned the "Madrassi" in his writings and cartoons.^[9]

I hate being referred to as a Madrasi as my mother tongue is Kannada and not Tamil.

PS - Saiyu this was mentioned in TPOL during Arnav's housewarming party.

K Madras was a name given only by the English people... Chennapatnam was what Chennai was called before the British period... And after India's independence Madras was changed to Chennai again... So we aren't Madrasi's either ! Madras Presidency referred to Kerala, TamilNadau, Karnataka and Andhra together...
