I am now really intrigued. Most of us seemed to have a hard time finishing the book yet going by the reviews, lot of high school kids loved it and it was not part of their mandatory read!! Don't know what it says about us adults😉</font>

Heineken, Savs, Doc great reviews! It sounds weird but I kinda of loved/hated the book at the same time. I found the prose profound at times and utterly juvenile at other times!!
Like I said earlier over all I did enjoy reading this but I must admit there were times I struggled ( the geek in me would never let a book unfinished ) to go forward especially the figurative language but then I would stop and ask my daughter what she thought of that and her replies rekindled my enthusiasm and I continued reading. Just to give you an example "the breakfast colored sun" I was like whaat? My daughter goes mom breakfast - eggs - yellow!!
Most appealing aspect of the book for me is the premise of the story -Leisel's everday life which kinda makes one realize that normal life goes on even during the ravages of war. As far as narration by death goes it took me a little bit of time to get the hang of the seemingly disjointed narration but as the book progressed I've gotten used to his foreshadowing, aside notes and digressions!
Few pages into the book my reaction was how can a book so difficult and sad be a YA fiction but as I kept reading I realized its precisely that YA.The story is pain stakingly slow which may be a hard thing for many YA to read but those who manage to read on it's the kind of book that can influence YA in a very positive way 1. Because the main character celebrates hope. A girl who grows into a good person despite poverty, war, bigotry and blood shed and becomes a human even Death cant help but fall in love. 2. The realization by Liesel of the remarkable power of words. The most profound being her realization that "Hitler would be nothing without words." What better way than this to make a teenager think about the value of words!
That being said its a looong book with a thin plot which moves at snail's pace with bizzare descriptions of weather, often times depressing not to mention the emotional manipulation. But for my daughter I wouldnt have enjoyed the book and I probably wouldnt recommend for others unless ofcourse you have a teenager who is a prolific reader!!
