Consuming Love: Something To Desire?
Not sure about the rest of you but when I found out that Elena said Damon "consumed" her and then found out later that he uses the same word to her in the flashback I just rolled my eyes lol. I was like""seriously?" I didn't exactly know what to feel about it and even though she chose Stefan it almost felt like an empty victory, although really it wasn't. It was just that pesky story line about meeting her first, turning into a vampire so that now she'll remember the compulsions, and all the DE fans that won't quiet down about any of it. That's what really bothered me, but then I had to realize that I knew this would happen sooner or later and they couldn't keep shoving Damon in a closet like he never happened. So then things moved on and I had many discussions with fellow SE shippers, and read many posts from all over. I, now have my own opinion about all this "consuming" business. And in case you aren't really sure what the word means"here it is:
Consuming: To engross or obsess, intense to such an extent as to take up all the time or energy of a person. An intensely felt emotion, or to be obsessed with a particular emotion.
Well there you have it. When you are consumed by love it's almost as if there is nothing else, and no one else. It borders on an obsession. Don't know about you, but it has Damon written all over it in my opinion. I mean loving and obsessing over the same woman for 145 years is indicative of being consumed. Or even being consumed by hate or bitterness because he sure felt that way towards Stefan for a long time. When two people are consumed by one another it can be pretty unhealthy. Like every thing you do will be wrapped up in that one person. There's a certain romanticism about it in that a single person can just suck you in by their intense feelings over you, and vice versa. It can lead people to shut out the rest of the world, or the people they care about when it's always about the other person.
When Elena says that Damon consumes her"-of course he does. Because he makes it ALL about her. He is so intense with her, and his feelings towards her that it's sucking her in. She tries to fight it obviously, but the tension is pretty overwhelming. Like it or not Elena is very sexually drawn to Damon. Paul Wesley mentioned recently that they have this dangerous, primal, sexual thing happening. Oh yeah. I mean it's not like I enjoy it or anything but being in denial about it doesn't help anyone in this fandom. Here's the interesting part for me though"-Damon and Elena are both consumed by the way HE feels about her. But...is Damon and Elena consumed by the way SHE feels about him? I'm inclined to say no. Perhaps sexually, but not love. Either way being with Damon"-he would want her to forget about everyone else. He would just want to "have" her all to himself. And Elena could likely fall victim to him because he is a weakness to her. It isn't love pulling her in. It's the sexuality of it. Even if it were love"-again it would be a selfish one. So much of it would be about what they want for themselves. It wouldn't paint either of them in the most flattering light. I think it would just be a downfall.
Now this is one of my favorite things to point out because I believe it illustrates Stefan and Elena's relationship so well. In 2x7 everyone is plotting to kill Katherine, and Bonnie expresses her concerns to Stefan telling him that she understands how he wants Elena back but trying to kill Katherine would be too dangerous. I love what Stefan says here. He tells her that of course he wants Elena back but that it's more than that. It's about protecting the innocents of Mystic Falls. Namely the people Elena loves because she's already done harm to Jenna. He isn't just thinking of his relationship with Elena. Of course he wants it back, but there's something larger and more at stake than that. It's people's lives. Then at the end of the episode Stefan thinks they will reunite. Does she comply? Nope. She loves him, she wants to be with him but she needs to know that the people she loves are safe first. Is Stefan upset? Sure. But does he understand? Yes, of course he does.
This is what I love about them. They love one another sooo much, and so passionately but they aren't going to be selfish with that love. Not with each other, and not with other people. They don't let their love for one another over consume them to the point of selfishly forgetting the other people in their lives that mean just as much if not more. Both Stefan and Elena have chosen their family over each other at one point or another. Not because they really wanted to, but because they are selfless. Their love is also about others, not just each other. It's not about satisfying what they want or what they can get from the other person. That love is taken to the highest places imaginable. It's unreal. That's actually what I admire, and find so beautiful. Many fans just swoon over that consuming love and how romantic it is when one person is all they care about"-that they would fight so hard and let everyone else go for that one person.
I can see the appeal in a certain way. Something kind of darkly romantic about it. Something kind of destructive, and seducing. But it has the ultimate power to destroy. If you're not careful you can slip into the abyss and lose yourself"who you identify yourself to be. You could lose all you hold dear. But Stefan and Elena actually allow each other to be who they are"the best versions of themselves. The best part is that it's who they aspired, or were driven to be in the first place. But together it's accentuated. They are also about the good of humanity, or mankind. Their love"-the way they love each other is such a driving force for the good of others. That's something to desire...
Stefan And Elena: A Twin Flame Union
Before I begin, I want to do a small introduction about this piece. I have honestly always loved the concept of soul mates and when a lovely anonymous shipper asked me to do this I was a bit daunted at first because I really didn't know much about soul mates. But I soon realized that I just needed to do some research and homework over the topic and I'd be in tip-top shape. It's been a true pleasure for me to research this and write a piece over it so thank you kind shipper for giving me the opportunity to do it. It was brought to my attention that some people within the fandom were laboring under the misapprehension that the DE pairing are the equivalent to Twin Flames and that the SE pairing are only soul mates.' Most people only know of the term soul mates' and not of twin flames.' When people say that a pairing are soul mates it is usually a generalized term to use for the couple and probably has no deeper meaning behind it. If you are well versed in such things then you will see that there is a difference, but most of us are not. Now before I really get started I want this to be my disclaimer: It is not my belief that the writers of this show actually delve that deeply into soul mates/twin flame connections. Although I wonder at times if some research was actually done because the similarities in my findings strongly correlate into the SE love/connection. But it is not my intent to prove in some way who the endgame of this series is but merely to debunk current ideas/theories happening as we speak and to also show how the ultimate soul mate connection accurately describes Stefan and Elena's relationship. Enjoy :)
One of the best things about my research on this topic is that I pulled from several different sources and did not rely on just one. Although there are some variances in my findings the concept remains the same, and the signs of a twin flame are the same. What I am going to do is show the different characteristics of a twin flame connection and then correlate that with what we see in the show with Stefan and Elena's relationship. What I put in bold italics is NOT what I, myself, have written but the writings of what I have found in my research regarding twin flames.
"Chances are you've met through a set of unusual circumstances... totally unplanned and unexpected"
This characteristic would absolutely fit in with Stefan and Elena's connection, and has also been labeled as the beginning of their love story by Julie Plec, herself. I'd say it was unplanned, unexpected and of very unusual circumstances that Katherine's literal doppelganger gets caught in an accident on the bridge where Stefan happens to be close enough to hear it and then saves her life. Some may say that Damon's meeting with Elena could be considered as well, but as unplanned, or unexpected' as it might have been there was more meaning behind Stefan and Elena's meeting for it was that event specifically that changed her life. Someone might be more prone to meeting a stranger on the side of the road then they are to find themselves in a life altering situation that would change the course of your life forever. Through this event Elena became someone different and she also met and connected with Stefan Salvatore. It's that moment that really shaped Elena into the Elena we now know. And Stefan enabled this. There would be no Elena without Stefan.
"You felt an immediate and deep connection for one another"
"There is an electrifying feeling between the two of you that words cannot describe"
"The relationship is immediate... as though no time had been lost since you were last together"
"Your conversations seem to go on forever ~ there is nothing you do not connect on"
"When you look into the other's eyes you see yourself"
These characteristics are strongly depicted in Stefan and Elena's relationship. It is noted that there's a strong connection that neither can truly understand. Stefan initially was drawn to her through Katherine's resemblance but soon found her to be nothing like Katherine. He was "simply not able to resist her." When Elena first sees Stefan she seems intrigued, smitten, and even puzzled as though she'd recognized him. Her reaction goes hand in hand with the idea that it was a soul recognition. When she walks away she turns back to look at him as she rears the corner. Look at her face there. It's almost as if she's truly puzzled over this immediate connection that took place, or that perhaps she saw herself. The first time she locks eyes on Stefan was significant because she was very intrigued, and suddenly connected in that moment. It rattled her cage a bit. Magnetism at its finest. As we know Stefan and Elena "talked, and it was epic." Stefan and Elena talked all night and a deeper connection was formed. There really isn't anything that Stefan and Elena do not connect through.
(1x1)
Elena: ( at the graveyard) Were you following me?
Stefan: No, I have family here.
Elena feels as though no one can truly understand what she's going through, but Stefan does. Although Stefan lost his parents many, many years ago it stays with him. They were able to connect through loss in many ways. They both felt dead inside. Elena felt that her life had no direction or real meaning any longer and Stefan was harboring a dark secret with past wounds. He was "alone in the world."
(1x1)
Elena: You keep a journal?
Stefan: Yeah if I don't write it down I forget it and..memories...are too important...
Elena: Yeah...
Both Stefan and Elena needed an outlet for what weighed so heavily on them. They were both lost and disconnected. They used a journal to unleash the burdens they couldn't share with anyone else. Stefan and Elena saw the importance of memories and it means much to the both of them which really connected them in this moment.
"Both Twins recognize one another at the soul level and feel as if they have met before. Synchronous events surround the union. The heart chakras open and both souls quickly merge into a third unified energy. Both Twins experience an acceleration of spiritual understanding.
The purpose of the Recognition and Temporary Spiritual Awakening Stage:
To activate the memory of each soul's life mission and to help awaken each Twin to higher levels of consciousness."
The synchronous events stick out to me in terms of the awakening of the other. Once that connection was made the wheels started turning. They were beginning to come alive again and go to higher places of consciousness which means to reach a different state of being. Stefan and Elena felt alone, and deeply depressed. Once they met and made a soul connection that state of consciousness was then changed and soared to higher levels. They will experience this simultaneously.
(1x2)
Elena: This morning is different. There's change. I can sense it, feel it.
Stefan: I am awake. For the first time in a long time I feel completely and undeniably wide awake.
Elena: For once, I don't regret the day before it begins.
Stefan: I welcome the day. Because I know I will see her again.
Elena: Because I will see him again. For the first time in a long time I feel good.
That is such a strong indication of their souls awakening. Both Stefan and Elena have experienced a complete change in their previous state of consciousness upon meeting one another. It's a prime example of what they were feeling like through the connection they shared.
"The initial temporary spiritual awakening (illumination) fades. The ego ("little self") begins to re-emerge. One or both Twins may attempt to fit the relationship into the "old model" of Love, couple-hood and relationship as it relates to their ego desires and learned belief system. Inner conflict arises. Twins ruminate on what they were taught to believe their beloved "should be" and how relationships are supposed to serve them.
Both Twins feel simultaneously inspired and toppled by the power of the union.
Doubts creep in making one or both Twins begin to view their beloved critically or suspiciously."
"Despite fears, both Twins naturally come together in cycles for bonding, confession, forgiveness and Lovemaking. These rituals cement higher levels of consciousness into the energy fields of both Twins."
This also heavily plays a part in the relationship of Stefan and Elena. When you look at Stefan"what held him back from meeting Elena was her uncanny resemblance to Katherine. He spent months making sure she wasn't her. He planned on leaving after feeling satisfied that she was not Katherine. But he "couldn't leave without knowing her." He was already drawn to who she was and felt a connection even then. His first step was actually meeting her properly. So his initial doubt about her then passed. Elena also experienced doubt and fear upon entering a relationship with Stefan.
(1x2)
Elena: The truth is, I'm scared Stefan. I'm scared that if I let myself be happy for even one moment the world is just going to come crashing down and I don't know if I can survive that.
Elena felt such a strong and euphoric like connection to Stefan that fear and doubt started to actually overcome her into believing that she might actually get let down by this potential union. Stefan had overcome what held him back from becoming a part of Elena's life, and this was Elena overcoming her doubt and fear of engaging in a relationship with Stefan. Each had their own personal baggage that came with those fears and it was ultimately overcome. This was the first part. The second part came with Elena learning what Stefan was. This also heavily correlates with the first statement about breaking through one's idealized idea of what love should be and who that love should be shared with. It's painfully obvious. The only thing that held Elena back from wanting to be with Stefan was because of what he was. She never lost her feelings for him but she most definitely battled the fight about letting go of her own beliefs regarding love. In Elena's mind her true love is human. Someone she can be married to, have children with and grow old with. Elena actually had to break down her own beliefs about that and let them go in order to let that love grow even further. However Stefan and Elena do both share the desire for normalcy and we see that displayed between them. Such as behaving like a real couple, and doing those things deemed normal in society. The last statement is true as well. Despite fears that this duo share, they still come together with communication, bonding and such.
"There are no barriers between the two of you... the relationship is a totally open one"
It's noted that Stefan and Elena share practically everything. Even when Stefan and Elena feel uncomfortable sharing something they cannot truly hide from the other. It will inevitably come rushing to the surface because it can't be kept in for any long period of time without being exposed. This also goes hand in hand with the previous excerpt regarding coming together despite fears.
(1x18)
Elena: Talk to me...
Stefan: I tried so hard to keep it together tonight. And it was working, it was working but then Matt's mom"she got hurt and she was bleeding and I got some of her blood on my hands...
Elena: And then what happened?
Stefan: That guy in the parking lot"I wanted to feed on him so badly and it took everything inside of me not to do.
Elena: But you didn't?
Stefan: No, but I wanted to. Elena...my head is pounding, I feel like my"my skin is on fire. I have this hunger inside of me that I've never felt before in my entire life and all I keep thinking is how I promised I would never keep anything from you and so I'm telling you this.
Elena: It's okay Stefan. I need you to tell me these things.
Stefan: But I don't want you to see me like this. I don't want you to know that this side of me exists.
Elena: Stefan, you're going to get through this. I'm going to help you pull through. You're going to be ok. You're going to be ok.
Stefan: I'm sorry, I'm afraid of what I could do to you.
Elena: (kisses him) I'm not, ok? I'm not.
Stefan: I love you so much.
(1x20)
Stefan: You don't understand, Elena.
Elena: Then, tell me..
Stefan: It hurts me. It hurts me knowing what I've done and that pain is with me all the time. And every day I think that if I just give myself over to the blood I can make that pain stop. It would be that easy and every day I fight that. And I am so terrified that one day I'm not gonna want to fight that anymore Elena. And the next time I hurt somebody, it could be you.
Elena: There will be no next time.
Stefan: You don't know that.
Elena: Maybe I don't, but what I do know is that you can take this"throw it in the quary and the sun rise. Or you can take this ring, put it on and keep fighting.
(2x9)
Elena: I can't talk about it Stefan.
Stefan: You have to. Please don't shut me out. Elena please...
Elena: I wanted the truth Stefan, and I got it. It's not just me that's in danger. It's Caroline, and it's Tyler, and it's Bonnie. They're all a part of breaking the curse. I can't blame anyone else anymore. Because it's not because you came into town, or because we fell in love. That's not why everyone I love is in danger. It's because of me, everything is because of me...
Stefan: Feeling her pain, embraces her.
(2x20)
Stefan: Hey, you can say it.
Elena: Say what?
Stefan: The thing you've been wanting to say but haven't because you're afraid of how it will make me feel.
Elena: There's nothing I can say Stefan. It's not going to change anything.
Stefan: Might make you feel better.
My apologies for having given so many examples but I truly believe this just drives the point home. Stefan and Elena bare their souls to one another. Try as they might for fear of hurting the other, or their own shame and personal guilt they cannot truly hide. All barriers come down, and the gates open for a level of unconditional love, and understanding that surpasses it all.
"You give to the other and never think of receiving in return"
If anyone pays attention closely enough they'll see that Stefan and Elena do not do things for each other just to gain something personally. They do it for the sake of giving. Anytime Elena gave her blood to Stefan"it was always to protect him or to be side by side with him so he didn't have to face it alone. It was completely selfless. Stefan gives Elena a lot of freedom without expecting anything else.
Elena: How can you be so fair about this?
Stefan: Because after everything I put you through, I'm just honored to be your date tonight.
They truly think of the other, and give to the other very selflessly. They do not view the other as someone they can take everything from, but someone they can give everything to.
"There are no restrictions within the relationship... all is freedom without the need for ownership or control"
This goes hand in hand with the above statement. This is huge in Stefan and Elena's relationship and it is one element of their connection that gets a lot of ridicule from other fans. But here it is in black and white. A characteristic of the ultimate, and highest love. Stefan and Elena do not give up on each other, but they also give the freedom of choice. Because they love one another, it won't always be so simple letting go if it's of a true desire. But it's that unconditional love they share which enable no restriction. It's a constant theme that we have seen play out in this series. Stefan and Elena will fight for each other, but at the end of the day they realize that they cannot truly force their beloved into something they don't want to do. It's difficult but again that love allows the selfishness to be placed elsewhere and the true love, selflessness, and acceptance to come forth. Sometimes it isn't spoken, but merely allowed.
(1x20)
Elena: It's your choice...
(2x22)
Stefan: It's not over. There might be a cure, but I have to find Klaus to get it.
Elena: No. He's gonna kill you.
Stefan: No. He had the chance to kill me but he didn't. Whatever Damon's done"whatever's led him here"I'm the one that made him become a vampire in the first place. So if there's a chance for a cure"I owe it to him to find it.
Elena: Understands and hugs Stefan, letting him go.
(1x6)
Stefan: Elena, give me today. I will answer any questions that you have and when it's over you can decide for yourself what you want to do with what you know. It'll be your choice...
(2x19)
Elena: I have to go back"to Elijah.
Stefan: Wait, what? No, no.
Elena: Stefan, I promised him that I would return. I'll be okay.
Stefan: Understanding, let's her go...
These just a few examples of how we see this relationship operate with no restrictions. These are occasions where fear is heavily involved, and where the possibility of losing one weighs on the other but have a faith and trust in the other person. Their love holds no bounds and no restriction. Together, they can let go.
"Trust, patience, acceptance of each other's weaknesses happen automatically"
This is a pretty big one, because it's talking about unconditional love, and acceptance. There are so many things about Stefan and Elena that make up their relationship but this is a pretty big one. Stefan's weakness is of course blood lust, and the person that can manifest because of that. For Elena it's going to be her capacity for trust, always wanting to see the good in others, and the compassion that can ultimately lead to darker things. As a vampire she could also experience feeling like another person when drinking the blood. Someone should not mistake Stefan and Elena's general opposition of the other person's weakness with acceptance. Stefan may not enjoy that Elena's weakness can result in unwanted events but he still accepts this as something that is a part of her and still loves her. Elena isn't going to welcome Ripper Stefan as someone she wants to share a life with, but it's her acceptance that he's in there"he's inside of him, and she still loves him.
(2x15)
Stefan: Lexi showed me that there was another way, and from that day forward I started fighting for it"-for my own survival. That's all I want you to do. I just want you to fight for it.
(3x7)
Elena: I haven't given up Stefan. I still have hope. But there's nothing I can do until you get yours back. Hey, you can break through this. Fight for it.
See, these are two separate scenes in which both Stefan and Elena witness something dragging their beloved down. Elena wanted to give up her life with no fight because her selflessness, and her compassion couldn't bring her to find another way to save the lives of her loved ones. Stefan accepts that this is a part of who she is but he still had hope, patience and love that she would also try and fight for herself in the end. The same goes with Stefan. He didn't want to feel anything. Not anymore. He was slipping, and he was slipping fast. Elena accepted this darkness as a part of who he was but never gave up hope that he would also fight for himself in the end instead of just giving up.
"Neither one of you are dependent on the other for your sense of self "
This might be one of my favorite things about Stefan and Elena because they do not actually require the presence of one to feel a strong sense of who they are. That doesn't mean we haven't and won't see them individually struggle with internal conflicts especially given the nature of the show is supernatural and darkness abounds. But they do not rely on the other to give them validation. Stefan and Elena both wanted to be good, and strived for that long before meeting each other. They don't need one to make sure the other is good. Sure, they may help each other but it would be of their own accord and not something they are seeking in the other person. Stefan and Elena do not share a codependent relationship. There's a very special individualized union between these two.
"There is a real feeling of unlimited heights to your feelings... you have a strong sense of eternity"
( 2x20)
Stefan: If it were my choice, I'd want to be with you forever.
(3x16)
Elena: There was something about Stefan that just felt safe. Like he would never stop loving me"like he would never die.
Stefan and Elena make each other feel eternal. That their love, their union will never die. That's quite an amazing way for a person to feel towards someone else. Vampire, or not. They felt that their love could go on forever and they made each other feel that way.
"The two of you have a strong urge to serve humanity in a deep and meaningful way"
Now, Stefan and Elena may not be out to save the world but when they are together they bring out the best versions of themselves. There is always a strong sense for no one to be hurt, and they want to make sure others are taken care of in many ways. In 1x17 Stefan realized that one of those vampires was trying to help him and stop the others from torturing Stefan. When he was being rescued he had Elena help him pull the knives, or stakes out of his legs because he didn't deserve that. When Klaus compelled the students to get in Stefan and Damon's way in 2x18 Damon was about to kill them. Stefan stopped him because they were compelled. It wasn't their fault. Elena doesn't have many scenes where she's exposed to strangers in danger but in 3x5 she did try and comfort the students in the gym and she never, ever wants anyone hurt. Stefan and Elena want to protect and save others. Stefan and Elena could be destined for greatness for the greater good of others. They share the same goals, and values.
(2x7)
Stefan: Look I want Elena back, yes but it's more than that. What Katherine did to Jenna crossed the line. She has to be stopped before it happens again.
Elena: I want to be with you Stefan, you know that. But first I need to wake up and know that the people I love are safe.
(2x12)
Elena: Stefan, I don't want anyone else to get hurt.
Stefan: When have I ever wanted anyone to get hurt?
Overall, Stefan and Elena strive for the same thing. Protection of the innocents. Together, they could be unstoppable. They make a great team because they want the same thing and they'll ultimately try and achieve that together and even separately. That goes hand in hand with feeling that strong sense of self.
"Hugging each other is like coming home for nourishment."
Yes, you read that right. Hugging each other is like coming home for nourishment. Stefan and Elena own this statement. When Stefan and Elena hug one another it is as if all is right with the world. They are in each other's arms and all fears are put away. A wave of comfort and relief has washed over them and they bask in its sweetness. It is a characteristic of this couple that has been made famous. Everyone sees how Stefan and Elena hug, and it's because they find nourishment and a sense of home in each other.
"During the periods of twin flames being apart, however brief or however extended, both persons are lonely, empty, and incomplete... yet even throughout any such temporary spaces in their togetherness, there's a constant, pulsing astral communication between them" for even then, they are linked by a cord that connects them over the miles."
We see this play out with Elena a few times in the series where she can sense Stefan near, or she can sense his essence. In 3x1 Elena knew it was Stefan on the other end of that phone call. She could sense him. In 3x2 she sensed his presence in the woods. In 3x12 she's outside and begins to sense something, or someone near and Stefan then appears. With Stefan"he can sense when it is Katherine and when it is Elena which no one else on the show has been able to do. They are linked in this special way which no one else can truly touch upon...
Here's a little something from a video I caught about twin flames that would also go hand in hand with this relationship and as my conclusion to this piece.
"Dark forces of anti-love run rampant on this planet and they don't want twin flames together because when two souls come together that are identical and can love each other in harmonious and healthy ways and turn that love into a mission in dharma it would wipe out all negativity on the planet."
In this particular series it may not run as deep as that, but we have seen external forces threaten Stefan and Elena's union"some of which are very, very dark. The idea of vampires, alone threatened this relationship. Stefan's own darkness"-his internal struggle, Katherine, Elena's need for safety for her family, Klaus, and a rather thunderous climax to Stefan's decent into darkness. Many things have stood in the way for a happy union with this pairing and we will only see more. The obstacles have been rampant and troubling. Twin Flames share a divine, selfless, unconditional, and beautiful love but it is not always easy for them to remain together. Nothing can be between twin flames for them to be at their most harmonious. That goes for outside forces, and inside forces. Twin flames try to be together but the can only remain together when all things that stand in the way are overcome. This means any internal struggles they carry within themselves. Twin flames will never stop loving each other but sometimes separation is necessary for the end result of their ultimate union. Once this special connection has been made it cannot be un-made or broken by anyone or anything. Stefan and Elena's love will never, ever fade and it will never die. It is the divine force of love that bring Stefan and Elena together time and time again. It is only destined to repeat. Stefan and Elena will prevail.
It made him feel that they had been lovers since the beginning of the universe, since the very first dawning of the very first star out of darkness. It was something very primitive, and very deeply ingrained in him... And then he was whispering to her, fierce, involuntary things about how he loved her and how they could never be parted, and endearments and absurdities wrenched from him in a dozen different languages. And then there were no words, only feelings."
What "epic" really means and why Stefan and Elena define its meaning.
The word "epic" has been thrown around a lot in this fandom, and perhaps even overused to describe whatever ship people feel best describes the meaning of the word. Well if you look up this word in dictionary's you'll find these words to describe its meaning: very imposing or impressive, surpassing the ordinary; heroic, grandiose; huge, stupendous, majestic. So with those words"-which couple in this triangle does it seem to best depict? Here's where things become a bit hazy, opinionated, and just plain subjective. But with that being said let's take a brief look into both ships and what they're all about.
Damon and Elena, oddly enough, seem to represent an earthly, human-like, "realistic," or relatable type of relationship/connection. Many believe that Stefan and Elena's relationship is the cliche because it's the "classic" good guy gets the girl type story. I have to disagree. If I really put some time and effort in to it I could name quite a few fictional characters that actually have the similarities of the Damon/Elena dynamic. The guy you wouldn't think gets the girl actually does, or the good girl inspires the bad boy to change. For me"this is actually the cliche love story because it has quite obviously been done many, many times. Not that Damon and Elena do not hold a special seat but i'm getting there. See Damon and Elena have taken quite a journey themselves. They went from hate/indifference, to tolerance, to friendship, to complicated once Damon began "falling" for her. And the complication train kept right on chugging when her feelings for him began also developing. Damon and Elena argue and fight. They hurt each other's feelings, and have been known to manipulate one another. There's a certain destruction and unhealthiness there. Damon will try to control, and dictate her life and her decisions. Elena constantly tries to change him, or might even use him as a tool to figure out what she wants and how she feels about it.
See there's this push/pull dynamic between the two that many people find exciting and a real keep-you-on-your-toes love/relationship. There's a certain unpredictability with Damon and Elena because there's always that line of love and hate between them. And that's just it. People have seen this kind of variation in love stories portrayed, not only in the world of fiction, but in real life as well. Take away the supernatural elements"put in behavior that's a bit less extreme and you have a type of love/connection that it very human and earthly. People engage in these types of relationships all the time. The arguments, the fights, hurting each other, lying, manipulating, controlling etc... all elements in many human relationships. There's a certain realistic ring to all these characteristics. They're not the best traits in a relationship but they are there nonetheless in many of them weather its known or not. If Damon and Elena were in a relationship it would NOT be easy. Now there are no relationships that are easy mind you, but humor me. Damon and Elena would be engaging in one of those relationships that would always be a struggle, a fight. He wants it his way, she wants it her way. They would probably be at each other's throats a lot of the time because they are simply two different people, polar opposites even. But what would they have? Probably a lot of lusty sex. Just throwing that out there. That's what make up a lot of what Damon and Elena possess. These are all things that are in the realm of the ordinary. It's been seen. It's been done. People live this every day.
Stefan and Elena on the other hand are a much different story. They are labeled as boring, too sweet, too perfect, or just that "classic" good boy does good and gets the girl in the end. No. This is NOT what this pairing really is. The fact that the two of them coming together brought their souls back to life is pretty amazing in itself. Instant attraction. Instant connection. Stefan and Elena actually transcend, or surpass the normal. They do not embody the typical human/love relationship. Their love is pure, selfless and ultimately undying. Their love/connection appears to be a soul or spiritual connection. Stefan and Elena fight for each other, they trust each other, they won't let the other one give up on themselves. They do not run at the first sight of trouble. They stand together. They give each other the choices to go on"to want things and figure things out for themselves. They remain individuals, but they have a never ending, passionate, and unconditional love. They NEVER stop loving each other no matter what. They love ALL of the other person"wholly, and unconditionally.
Stefan and Elena's relationship challenges are more about outside forces coming in to threaten their relationship or their own internal conflicts/struggles within themselves that could pose a threat. It's never that they stopped loving each other, or that they didn't truly want to be together. Many things have tried to come between Stefan and Elena and they have always reunited. They never give up. Each time they are reunited they are stronger than they were before. Stefan has always been able to tell Katherine, and Elena apart from each other. Or the fact that Elena KNEW it was Stefan on the other end of that phone call, or when she sensed he was out there in those woods (someone pointed that one out.) How about the necklace that represented hope to Stefan, or the unbreakable bond of Stefan and Elena"-and that necklace couldn't be destroyed. Gotta love the symbolism there. I don't believe I have EVER seen a love story portrayed like this one between Stefan and Elena. Not like this. Not a love that is so pure, so divine, so selfless and undying. They are truly untouchable.
So in closing"- one relationship/connection is in the realm of what is deemed "normal." It is of the ordinary, or commonly seen(Damon and Elena). The other surpasses it all. It is not of this world"-it is not commonly seen or experienced. It is a rare type of love that will never, ever die (Stefan and Elena). So yes, Stefan and Elena's love story does indeed fit the accurate description of Epic...
