which new Bollywood movie should i watch ....
BHAJAN & DANCE 16.9
Doc, first of all, thanks for coming up with MoM idea. And next ,thanks for suggesting Garam Hawa. I had not watched it earlier. And even if I had, I doubt I would have understood it as a young girl.
For someone, who is far removed from the realities of partition, the cause and the after effects of that on people life, it's hard for me to relate to that aspect of the movie. Yes, based on what I have learned in history, I can emphasize with characters, but I doubt I would be able to do justice to it. So I would rather not get into it.
What I could relate to, was how Salim Mirza tried to hold on to his idolism. How he couldn't grasp the inevitable change in society. How he continued to believe that everything would come back to normal. And finally had to face tremendous hardship and lose thing that was dear to him, before he realized that things would never be same again and if he has to survive, he has to take charge of his own life.
Doesn't every generation go thru something similar? Not like the extreme scenarios depicted in the movie, but in small ways. World keeps changing, society changes, social / moral rules change. I was fortunate enough to grow in a society where I only saw harmony between different religions. Or maybe I was too young or too ignorant to notice conflict, if any. But I grew up with muslim friends. I don't even remember any particular conversation around religious differences. Mamu chaha, my father's best friend from school days, happens to be the greatest, most selfless human being I have ever met in my life. For all the kids in the colony, he was the go to person, whenever there was any conflict.
I still cannot fathom why people behaved or continue to behave in a way that causes friction in the society. Why is it so hard for people to understand the concept of 'live and let live'?
Most days, one is too busy with the daily routine life to think about it. But when you watch movies like this, it forces you to think...
