Visi exactly - quiet, quotidian. Not brimstone and fire, but so piercing.

Still? After 65 years it is still an issue for Muslims to rent homes? Seems anachronistic and shocking.

Savs, yes those I think are about the immediate turmoil at the time of partition. I think this film and the Ghatak films are about the after effects.

Time to head to SKD. Catch you ladeej at another time. 🤗

Doc, first of all, thanks for coming up with MoM idea. And next ,thanks for suggesting Garam Hawa. I had not watched it earlier. And even if I had, I doubt I would have understood it as a young girl.

For someone, who is far removed from the realities of partition, the cause and the after effects of that on people life, it's hard for me to relate to that aspect of the movie. Yes, based on what I have learned in history, I can emphasize with characters, but I doubt I would be able to do justice to it. So I would rather not get into it.

What I could relate to, was how Salim Mirza tried to hold on to his idolism. How he couldn't grasp the inevitable change in society. How he continued to believe that everything would come back to normal. And finally had to face tremendous hardship and lose thing that was dear to him, before he realized that things would never be same again and if he has to survive, he has to take charge of his own life.

Doesn't every generation go thru something similar? Not like the extreme scenarios depicted in the movie, but in small ways. World keeps changing, society changes, social / moral rules change. And every generation struggles to let go and adapt. Some do it proactively while some only after seeing the inevitable.

A beautiful movie with simple, moving script and wonderful restrained performances by the whole cast.⭐️👏

Haven't had a chance to read everyone else's take as yet. Back to first page, I go.

I just want to say 'What the' - ASR style. Excuse me what is Mallika's contribution to anything for India. I hate people who make these kind of statements just to gain some attention. Having stayed in both the states and India for longer time in both the places, I always felt each place had its own advantages. Like I can be independent and out going in US while in India I love the warmth and good feeling I get here with neighbors, friends. I won't put any place down - Each is good in its own way. And if Mallika feels India is that depressing, then why doesn't madam move over to LA permanently and stay here. Nope - she is now staring in Bachelorette on Life Ok because she needs moolah to survive and she knows she can earn better in India than she can in US. So she wants to stay in India and earn her money and then on top of it she goes to press with these demeaning statements about India. Hypocrites I say.

Haineken, Vista, what beautiful posts. I have rarely interacted with people who have such personal connection with partition. Thank you for sharing it.

I was fortunate enough to grow in a society where I only saw harmony between different religions. Or maybe I was too young or too ignorant to notice conflict, if any. But I grew up with muslim friends. I don't even remember any particular conversation around religious differences. Mamu chaha, my father's best friend from school days, happens to be the greatest, most selfless human being I have ever met in my life. For all the kids in the colony, he was the go to person, whenever there was any conflict.

I still cannot fathom why people behaved or continue to behave in a way that causes friction in the society. Why is it so hard for people to understand the concept of 'live and let live'?

Most days, one is too busy with the daily routine life to think about it. But when you watch movies like this, it forces you to think...

Sorry peeps, my bestie called from India...had six months worth of catching up to do... didn't mean to disappear like this😳

Came back and re-read, to realize that I may have mistakenly given the impression that I grew up in any sort of conflict...nothing could be further from truth. This is not all nostalgia speaking, but growing up in Lucknow was the best example of the Indian brand of secularism (not what the word means here in the US) that you can find anywhere. We were just two Muslim families in the neighbourhood and celebrated all the festivals together. Be it diyas and crackers on Diwali, colours and ghujias on Holi, or my Mom's kebabs and sewayyan on Eid...everyone participated and enjoyed. The families I grew up with remain the dearest of friends to this day. And then there were the school friends...again, life long friendships that continue to this day.
