Here's my movie review from my weekend watching.
Highly recommend that you watch Movie Kanchenjunga - 1962 by Satyajit Ray. Its 97 minute movie, bengali and having english subtitles, available over You Tube.
How I came to watch it this weekend ?! I watched Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (TGKS) - Devanand and Nutan one. Really liked it. The romance, the upper-end-social class and its aspirational projection of those times reminded me of Love in Shimla (LIS). The hero and Heroine of LIS are not as mature and adult as the couple of TGKS. However there are lot of similarities. The social mix-up is through clubs, high-end life style, parents watching over their girls mixing up with potential suitors for possible match...in such a way that boys and girls actually flirt or rather go around in friendly manner to know each other better and are not die-hard romantics unless they see potential worth in the possible partner. Both Rakesh of TGKS and Dev of LIS are looking for girls who can support their life style requirements and are going around with girls, but in total filmi entertainment style, we have love and romance budding with girls they can die for. The flirting gradually cements to romance and love. Its warm enjoyment like the vacation they have on those hills.
Now these two took me to same kind romantic and poetry in cinema to Ray's Kanchanjungha. I was reminded of that film wherein the main drama is about the impending proposal from the suitor to the girl while they are walking around. This is also about societal upper class with lot more maturity of topics thrown in. Unlike bad economic spillage we have at the DDA plots auction in TGKS in the beginning where the men in their enemity take the plot prices high, here in Kanchanjungha, we have the successful men talking about their clout over country's developemental map through their materialistic thinking. And yet, amidst that seriousness we are shown that, the womenfolk are still in need of romance and love in their life. It just cannot be about security in marriage and family prestige. There is also shown to us how the young generation would want to have independence.
Interestingly all these three movies are the early 60's movies with none of the melodramatic stuff...so much that even LIS, Sonia's dilemma is genuine. Definitely, she played out to win the bet, but she never knew she would fall for the man so much...after all she did not know what love would be like. And if we see Monisha of Kanchanjungha, we see that she knows that she is inexperienced and Mr.Bannerjee is kind, honest and intelligent experienced man throughout, eligible in every way, but alas her father should have seen that she is just 19 with lot of vivid imagination, a girl who would like to explore and learn through rebelling decisions occassionally and making mistakes and not just be the perfect wife to a wise husband where she never could have participated in any conversation. There should be room for collaborative effort...where is that ?!!!
