Capricorn: A mixed bag of fortunes awaits you this week. There will be family tensions that will make you feel dejected on the one hand, and on the other, you will experience great happiness and contentment in the work that you do on the professional level. Ganesha says you will have to be alert about keeping pace with fast developing events, which will be wide-ranging, right from financial matters to spiritual issues. You will also have to fulfil many social commitments, and to expedite matters you may not always have the time to consult everyone. Be careful about the possibility that your success could give rise to jealousy not only among your colleagues, but also in your social circle.

Body language – an unwritten script to unlock minds

Body language is the gestures, postures and facial expressions through which a person communicates.

Would it not be exciting if you could read and interpret body language allowing you an access to the mood and thoughts of the person in front of you?

If you could read and understand the body language of your spouse, boss or client, you might be able to persuade them or close a deal more effectively by doing things that are exactly in harmony with their thoughts and mood! Imagine having that kind of power of persuasion in your hands!

What is body language?

Body language means non-verbal signals what people use to communicate – like stance, gestures and facial expressions. Experts opine that non-verbal signals account for more than 60 per cent of our daily communication. These non-verbal communications – facial expressions to movement of our body convey more information about us than we can imagine!

So, how can body language help you understand people better? Read on to learn more

Handshake

Imagine being able to accurately predict that state of mind/mood or thoughts of a person while shaking hands with him/her!

Here's what a handshake can tell you:

  • A firm handshake with the palm pointing downwards always means that the person is confident.
  • A wilted handshake with the palm pointing upwards means that the person is either shy or nervous or tensed.
  • If the person's palm comes in contact with your palm it means that the person is sincere and has nothing to hide.
  • An extended arm shows that a person is enthusiastic and confident.

Eyes

  • Those who look at everything else but you while you are talking to them might be a sign of nervousness or distraction. It might also indicate submissiveness.
  • If the person looks at you with a side glance or obliquely, it could mean that he/she is distrustful or unconvinced.
  • Staring at the ground or looking down could mean they are upset or trying to hide something emotional.

Clenched fist

Clenching fists could imply aggressiveness or negativity. A person with clenched fist may be conveying frustration or anger. He might also be resisting your views or opinions and it may also be a sign of defensiveness.

Mouth

  • A person with pursed lips may be indicating distaste, disapproval or distrust.
  • If the person is biting his/her lips it could mean worry or stress.
  • And a person with a covered mouth could be hiding a smile or smirk or an emotional reaction.

Arms and legs

While evaluating body language, look out for these signs that the arms and legs may convey:

  • Crossed arms could mean that the person is not open to social influence. Though a lot of people may cross their arms, it could still mean that they are reserved or self-protective.
  • People who stand with their hands placed on their hips indicate that they are in control or it could also be a sign of aggressiveness.
  • Crossed leg could be an indication that the person is in need of privacy.
  • Fidgeting fingers and hands indicate that the person is impatient, bored or even angry.
  • Tapping of foot, shifting of weight or frequent movement of foot could mean that the person is nervous, excited, impatient or intimidated.

Conclusion

Reading the signals that people send out through their body language is an excellent social skill. While, some of us can read it almost instantly, there are some who are quite oblivious. So with a tad bit of attention you can read body language and with slightly more practice, it can become second nature!

5 Ways You Can Be Happier at Work Right Now

No matter how passionate you are about your business, the stress, long hours, and a myriad of worries can leave you feeling unhappy at work. According to a June 2012 report by the Conference Board, an independent business membership and research association, only 47% of Americans are satisfied with their jobs.

"We spend way too much time at work to not be happy," says Beth Thomas, author of Powered by Happy: How to Get and Stay Happy at Work (Sourcebooks, 2010). Being unhappy at work can not only affect your mood, but your productivity and your company's bottom line.

Bring joy into your job and improve your company's success with these tips:

1. Stay rooted in the present. "Many of our negative thoughts come from worrying about situations that may never happen," says Thomas. While entrepreneurs often have to make contingency plans, constantly thinking about the worst case scenario can place undue stress on your body and mind and drain it of resources that are better used in more productive ways.

"The best way to deal with negative thoughts is to separate fiction from fact," says Thomas. So, the next time you find yourself facing a negative thought, analyze the situation and ask whether you're reacting to a real or imagined situation.

2. Engage in positive thinking. Shifting negative thoughts to positive ones can help to improve your mood and mindset. "Every time a negative thought comes into your head, stop and think about a positive one," says Thomas. Do this for a few weeks and you'll quickly notice that you're creating a new habit that will enhance your happiness not only at work, but in your daily life.

3. Help others. Whether getting involved in philanthropic activities or helping your staff improve in their jobs, Thomas says charity is the secret to lasting happiness. "Happiness at work isn't about what you alone achieve. It's not about helping yourself look better, but about making everyone on your team perform better," says Thomas.

Setting up an employee mentoring program where senior staff members assist junior staff, or getting your staff involved in a philanthropic activity such as a local food drive or a charity cycling event can improve the happiness of everyone in the office.

4.Take a break. While entrepreneurs are often motivated by positive stress, the kind that pushes us to do more, it's important to recognize when your mind and body need a break. "Even if you like your job, stress can weigh you down and make you unhappy," says Thomas. Schedule a few days off or find an outlet after work or on the weekend to have fun, rest your mind and rejuvenate yourself.

5. Keep a gratitude journal. Happiness doesn't come from getting something you don't have, but recognizing and appreciating what you do have. Write down five things you're grateful for each day before you start work, or before you leave the office at the end of the day, to retrain your brain to focus on the positive.

A Ray Of Sunshine Is A Smile:

I was walking down the road one day feeling a bit low and not concentrating on anything much when I heard a vehicle coming up from behind me and I felt the urge to turnaround and look in the car and to my surprise it was this teenage girl I know and she was waving to me with great enthusiasm and with a very happy-to-see-you look of her bright sun shiny face.

All I did was look at her and in a half a second I was wearing a big smile at the sight of such friendly enthusiastic attention and genuine happiness.

Her smile totally lifted me. After she had gone I was walking down the street and then I realised that my pace has sped up and I was walking with positive enthusiasm.

That is what a brightly smiling face can do for someone when they are feeling down.

I do believe that God turned my face in the direction of the car and said "Look James, a friend, now smile!"

You carry that amazing free power with you everyday to brighten up someone else's life. Have a go because this and love are what make the world go around in harmony.

Tips to concentrate better and get more done!

Concentration is the key to your performance at work and outside. The quality and the quantity of work that you can do almost always depend on your ability to concentrate. No matter how much effort you put in, if your brain is not up to it, you cannot be as productive as you want to be.

There are several factors that affect our concentration and a few might even be out of our control. However, mostly concentration is determined by our behaviour. So, even half-hour of concentrated effort can help you get more done than an entire day of distraction and multitasking.

Here are a few tips to get your brain functioning and help you excel at any activity you take up:

Silence is the matra

Distractions obviously don't allow you to concentrate, but have you ever tried to actually cut them out? Yes it is tempting to check your e-mail once every five minutes, reply to every ping on IM or read every update on Facebook. But all this is only preventing you from concentrating. So, make a schedule. Check and answer your e-mails once a day. Inform your friends not to interrupt you as you are working on a big project. Also, go into the 'do not disturb' mode on IM and most importantly log off from FB.

Clear goals

You have to make sure what your goals are before you start work. If you are not sure what the end result is, it might be impossible for you to concentrate as you are confused. For example: If you are writing an article, make sure to have a mental picture of the structure or you might end up redoing a lot of work instead of progressing with the article.

Identify a path

If you are working on a huge project that needs a lot of work, it would be a good idea to identify a path so you are clear about the start and end point. If there is no sequence to your actions, you will find it difficult to concentrate. At the beginning of the day, take a few minutes to plan not just your end result but also the order in which you will get there. This can save you hours of wasted thinking.

Deadline

A deadline will force you to concentrate. It will make you speed up your work and at the same time make it easier to forget the non-essentials. You will have to set a deadline for yourself if your time is limited. If you have just one day to finish a project that could take weeks, it into specific deadlines as this will help you do away with all that is not crucial.

You can also use a deadline to keep your tasks under control. For example: If you are designing a logo and the task could expand to have new features, a deadline will help you keep it simple and avoid working on extravagant designs.

Eat healthy

A huge oily meal always slows down your mind and body. If maximising your ability to concentrate is your goal, eat light and healthy meals. Make loads of vegetables, fruits and whole grains a part of your daily diet. Keep a few carrots, cucumbers, energy bars or a salad to munch on in case you are running out of energy.

Exercise regularly

All our bodies have pent up energy which needs to be used. Exercising is the best way to improve your concentration and keep you active and alert through the day. It clears your head, gives you a chance to plan your day and also allows your body to sweat out impurities. Exercise at least 30 minutes in the morning to feel rejuvenated, cleansed and ready to face the day with vigour.

7 Simple Ways to Relieve Stress Now

In 2010, eight years into running her tutoring company, Ann Peaslee was reaching a breaking point. She was taking care of her ailing mother while trying to meet the demands of her business, Lehigh Valley, Pa.-based P.R.E.P. LLC. The web designer she'd hired wasn't following through on plans and Peaslee's ads weren't generating as much business as she'd anticipated. Then, one night during a thunderstorm, her house got struck by lightning, knocking out her business phone line.

To cope with the stress and keep focused, Peaslee began what she calls a "walk and talk" at least once a week. She walked the neighborhood streets with a friend for an hour and talked through whatever had been bothering her. "You are getting rid of your anxiety by just getting it out," she says. "It puts you back in the right perspective."

Incorporating a stress relief routine in your workday requires time and effort. But here are seven quick and easy techniques that may work for you:

1. Count your breath. Taking deep breaths and lengthening your exhale relative to your inhale will calm your sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for triggering your fight or flight response, says Timothy McCall, author of Yoga As Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (Bantam, 2007). Counting the length of your inhale and exhale and gradually lengthening how long you take to exhale will help counter this stress response. If you take four seconds to inhale, for example, work to lengthen your exhale so that it lasts eight seconds. While every person's breath count will be different, taking 10 breaths like this can help calm your mind and body.

2. Sing it out. If sitting quietly and counting your breaths sounds impossible or unappealing, you can sing or hum to achieve a similar effect. When you sing or hum, you are naturally lengthening your exhale, which will slow your breathing and help calm you, McCall says. Be sure to breathe in and out of your nose as you do this. If the idea of singing or humming in the office seems silly, do it in your car on the way to work.

3. Drink more water. When your hydration level drops by even 2 percent, your ability to do simple math and make decisions is disrupted, says Mike Collins, founder of the Perfect Workday, a Raleigh, N.C., company that focuses on workplace effectiveness. "The more hydrated you stay, the better you think." Try keeping a pint-sized container of water by your desk that you refill three or four times a day.

4. Do a body scan. Redirecting your focus away from your worries and toward your physical body for a minute or two can help alleviate stress, says Andy Puddicombe, a former Buddhist monk and co-founder of Headspace, a U.K.-based company that teaches meditation and mindfulness techniques to business professionals. Close your eyes and take half a minute to do a mental scan of your body starting at the top of the head. Notice the sensation of your feet on the floor, your body in your chair and your hands on the desk. Repeat this scan two or three times. Rather than being stuck in your loop of worries, you're turning your attention to the sensations of your body. "By shifting the focus to physical senses, you are stepping out of the thinking mind and bringing the mind into the body, which immediately has a calming effect," Puddicombe says.

5. Keep vacation photos handy. Another way to escape from stressful thoughts is to keep vacation photos or postcards nearby. When you feel stressed, look at an image for a moment, close your eyes and try to imagine all the sensations you were feeling in that place--what you saw, smelled, felt, heard and tasted. This technique will calm you by focusing your attention on the physical sensations of your body as you visualize a particularly relaxing place. "Try to activate each of the five senses," says Margaret Wehrenberg, author of The 10 Best Ever Anxiety Management Techniques (WW Norton 2009). "It's literally the antithesis of stress for a minute."

6. Create a ritual. Instead of rushing to grab a cup of coffee or scarfing a snack, make a ritual of it, says Puddicombe. Take the time to notice the sounds, feel and smells of what you're preparing--whether it's a cup of tea or fresh fruit. Such a daily ritual can be soothing, helping you focus on something other than your thoughts, Puddicombe says. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it's something you have positive associations with.

7. Laugh out loud. Humor is the opposite of stress, according to John Morreall, president of Williamsburg, Va.-based Humorworks, which focuses on using humor in team-building exercises and other workplace activities. "In a stressful situation, you are emotionally engaged with some problem," he says. "When you laugh at a situation, you are distanced from the problem." To find relief in humor, Collins watches a YouTube video of a flash mob in Moscow dancing to "Puttin' on the Ritz." That never fails to make him laugh.
