Sanika, thanks for inviting me to this thread!

This may sound geeky, but I absolutely enjoy reading character analyses and discussion surrounding the storyline and themes perhaps as much as I enjoy reading the book, so reading your thoughts are just fab.

I'm currently reading PnP now so will drop my comments in later, but I've just finished reading (and watching) North and South. The main protagonist Mr Thornton is similar to Mr Darcy, and even the love story between he and Margaret has that love-hate element to it too.

I have to say, I'm loving these period romances a whole lot more now...Here every glance every slight touch is written so well, you don't even need any exaggerated helpings of PDA to help move the story along or show how the characters are feeling.

My siggy explains everything 😆

I am done reading An Assembly Such as this and will jot down my views on it :)

I really loooved the concept of seeing PnP through the eyes of Mr. Darcy and I think only Darcy is capable of making me go "aaawww" 😳 Before I say anything let me make it clear that I liked the book. But being a compulsive reader, I tend to criticise more than appreciate books unfortunately. I hope you will bear with me.

The book is clearly meant to target the female audience. It was a bit too romantic for me. Similar to a regular MnB. It was stuff of female fantasy, more what a woman wants a man to think rather than how the male mind actually thinks. Hence I am not sure if it did justice to the male thought process.

The 2 things I liked about the original that I found missing in the current book was that firstly it was very realistic, the emotions, actions, reactions of all the characters involved. JA's grasp of human nature was accurate and to blend it with dry wit - icing on the cake! This quality has made the book timeless. 1000s of women before us have enjoyed this book and many more will enjoy it, no matter what the generation because the basic nature of people doesn't change!

The second reason I liked the book was because Darcy never really seemed to be the "looks" kind of guy to me as with every other love story or fairytale for that matter. The way I interpreted, he was attracted to Lizzy solely due to her spunk and intellect. The writer of the book tried to incorporate this into her version but she seemed to stress more on her beauty bit. It seemed a bit odd to me. The writer somewhere got confused between Darcy and Romeo along the way 😆

But the one thing I really liked in the book was the possible explanation that Darcy wanted to cut contact with Lizzy and witch was partly the reason he dissuaded Bingley in his courting of Jane. That is something I had never thought off. A very good analysis.

Sorry! I completely forgot to check my PM!

Um, well, I haven't properly read a book in quite some time, 😕 though my most recent attempt has been The Assassin's Song (coming-of-age story with a desi touch; it looks at whether we can choose our own path in life or if following what's been set out for us by parents, destiny, etc., is more overpowering).

I've got lots of random, partially/mostly-read books stacked in piles, but I find that I always fall back on classics. There's the sense that they aren't just written for mass consumption; you can see the effort the author has taken to weave the story and develop the plot just as much as the characters. And ab toh I've been hearing quite a bit about this North and South...

I first read P&P as a teenager, mostly out of curiosity and the influence of elder siblings. There's something about the subtlety and simplicity that makes you appreciate the beauty of a time when things weren't so oversexed. I used to joke that if I were white and Christian, I'd have been perfectly at ease in Austen's world. I don't know if any of you have seen Lost in Austen, but it was an interesting take on how a 21st-century woman adjusts to Victorian England.

@ bold: That's my main reason for loving fiction so much: you actually get to understand human behaviour and open your eyes to the world through different perspectives. And when I'm too slow to understand characters and their motivations on my own, analyses come to the rescue! 😃

Thanks Sanika for the PM!

This is the reason why I didnt like the other 2 books in the series of The Gentleman. That Darcy was attracted to anyone else than Lizzy, is unimaginable to me😭And here I thought I was an open minded person😆

No problem
Der aaye , durust aaye and all that😉
I sometimes get stressed that i have an every growing list of books to read , but real life keepsinterferingin my love affair😭
I second your point aboutsubtlyvs over-sexism

That was such a change to know that 2 people were attracted no because of beauty or riches, but because of their character and intelligence. I personally think that this is most imp in any relationship to have a similar wavelength rather than attraction
Hence I find IPK pretty unrealistic, as I am one of the few people who dont think Arnav and Khushi make a compatible pair in real life, logically speaking, unlike Lizzy and Darcy.

Attractioncan only last that long. It is the conversations that will keep the fires going...

@ sanika
yeah tell me about it...2nd book i pretty much FF read it...3rd...only the relevant bits...the excitement of first book fizzled out quickly in the 2nd...barely finished 3rd...so moral...classic will always be a classic...people may try to put their own spin to it...but the characters are original authors creation only she knows how they should behave and how they should not...

I find IPK pretty unrealistic...
thats why i like it...its not real...reality sucks 😆

i'm living example of how opposites are compatible...my hubby is an extrovert and i'm a total introvert...he likes socializing...i like staying at home...he likes crowded family gatherings ...i get panic attacks thinking of all the people crowding my space...
how does it work?
...understanding each other and whole lot of compromises...

so i kinda like that they're not supposed to be compatible but are in most instances...👍🏼
talking to each other... thats what i miss most in Arshi relationship...but when they do talk it makes awesome TV...thats for CVs to understand...i think thats too much to hope for these days...still i'm gonna stick to it only coz of sarun.

I like fiction too, but there should be some logic to it!
Take for example Harry Potter
I
What I meant with IPK , is that I do not think they are mentally compatible.
Tell me , what do u think ; Arshi can talk abt in length ?
What you described are habits. They are external.
Habits and thoughts are 2 completely different things!
Under the banner of Opposites attract, people tend to swallow anything.
Like in your case, I am sure your basic outlook towards life is similar with your husband.
