I have never read fantasy, but I guess the main character is always male because they want to make the most of the hero and show that he is the strongest. Maybe since heroes were always male(in movies) except a couple of them all the authors decided to make male protagonists. Sexist authors.

I don't know Pinks..have you ever heard of a Wizard being burnt at stake or healing(magically )
Woman have been traditionally balemd for those things.
and the books which do have a female lead are of the paranormal romance genre.

Fablehaven: at least has a girl and a boy
Nicholas Flamel:Agai n girl and a boy but the boys aura is stronger

The female is just a side kick or love interest
....granted she has powers but the story isn't built around her.
I have a friend who is writing her own fantasy novel and when I put this question to her ..she said it is because young girls/ women are the demographic these books target.They are the ones interested in this genre.

I was thinking the same when I started reading PJ, Smita...
The best I can think of is when there is a male protagonist in the fantasy book, the boys go gaga over his wits, power and strength and the girls go all dreamy and worship him.... Even if u take the names Wizards and Wictches... witches have more negative connotation attached to them. 😡😕

Exactly Nitzy ..you have few Evil Wizards but a witch by lore is evil.It is almost like a gali.
It is not fair.. even in Mythologies there are more warrior goddesses then gods.

Even there aren't many successful female superheroes in comics.. even if they are, their attires are skimpy and body hugging, with unrealistic features...targeting male demographic again.

Sad to know that these fictional characters couldn't survive a chance even in comic books
