Thanks Sting! Inglorious Basterds is one of my most anticipated films for this year (followed by Broken Embraces, of course)... do come back, we have lots of discussions pending!

Dude, your taste in films is almost impeccable. Melikes! Stanley Kubrick fan by any chance?

I don't think it's ageism as much as it is politics with the Academy. Typical Oscar formula? Fake nose + drug addict + rape scenes + retards + Nazis + HARVEY WIENSTEIN= OSCAR GOLD! It's funny, Kate Winslet was told that if she does a Holocaust film, she'll win an Oscar. That's exactly what happened, despite the fact that her performance in 'The Reader' was not as brilliant as compared to her previous performances (Eternaal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

I don't even want to talk about Scorsese! Ron Howard had an Oscar before Scorsese got his due. Be silent my beating heart....I think Tom's first Oscar will probably a life time achievement award, a la Paul Newman (another magnificent actor who got his due for a lesser role).

I have seen The Hours, and I felt like Nicole kidman's prothetic nose did most of the acting. She wasn't bad, but there's no way in hell she was better than Julianne Moore that year. Her performance in Far From Heaven was nothing less than overwhelming!. It was certainly an award-worthy work from one of our very finest actresses.

Almadovar = God amongst insects. Have you seen Don't Move? Penelope's best work to date.

Yes, there is alot of politics involved. How playing a mentally challenged character guarantees an Oscar or uglifying oneself? See Tom Hanks and Charlize Theron respectively.
And yes Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that film changed my movie watching experience forever. I actually own it, can't wait to watch over the summer. I think the reason why I liked that film though I only saw it once was the subject matter it dealt with (a woman's role and how it has changed in terms of fulfillment) so that may be why. Oh no doubt Julianne Moore was robbed, and I think someone else, who I am forgetting was better than year. BTW, I did like The Reader better than Revolutionary Road only because I felt Sam Mendes did not do justice to the book, and he does the same darn thing every movie. Depressed people in the suburbs that hate their lives and makes marriage seem like the worst thing in the world. He has repeated this lovely motif since American Beauty, and frankly I am tired of this schtick. Move on.
Oh, and I will put Don't Move on my list of movies I need to see. Gosh, I have so much to catch up on. And yeah, I love Paul Newman. He was a beautiful soul inside and out especially with what he made of his life after films too.

Oh,and I do love what I have seen of Kubrick's films, which are only 2001:A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, and A Clockwork Orange.

Nimz, are you my alter ego? I do feel that Tom Hanks deserved his Oscars, but there are plenty of actors who play 'retarded' roles for the sake of winning Awards (see Sean Penn in I am Sam). It's easier to win awards for more showy, loud performances, then it is for nuanced, subtle and restrained performances.

I can't praise ESOSM enough! It's one of my all time favorite films, absolutely poetic, and I love films with non-linear forms of storytelling.

I absolutely loathed The Reader, which I thought was shallow garbage, made to earn Oscar glory. I hate pretentious pseudo-intellectual drivel! So I guess this is where we disagree, because I did love Revolutionary Road. I haven't seen American Beauty, therefore, I cannot draw parallels with the former film.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Paul Newman, who I think is the greatest actor of all time. The news of his death actually brought tears to my eyes (a rare feast for the eyes). He's such a giving and unassuming hum being, I absolutely adore him. If anyone doesn't fall in love with him while watching Cool hand Luke, they need to check their heartbeat!

Gosh, I could gush about Newman all day...
