Okay. So I was hoping and hoping and hoping some more that when I made a topic again here after such a long absence, it would be occasioned by something happy. Just goes to show how we rarely, if ever, get to do things as simply and neatly as we plan for ourselves. Please do put up with me, everyone, because this one might be long and slightly tedious, but it's something I have wanted to say for quite some time now, and tonight's episode being the way it was, this is as good a time as any to say it.
I've been watching D3 as long as it's been on air...and in all this time, one thing that has always been a cause for unease, is how there is this 'hero' image and the glorification that comes with it, that always goes to just one individual character along with the spotlight and centre-stage position. Before I go on, I'm going to make it very clear that this is NOT an anti-Rey/KAS post, nor is it a Shantanu/Vrushika/D3gang v/s KAS post. It is simply a post that appeals to whoever might be reading this from the crew, to explain to me why exactly just ONE individual is made the glorified be-all and end-all of D3, all the time. Sure, Rey is the college hunk, sure he's all brawn and guts and whatnot. And sure, that makes a hero for some. But it doesn't make a hero for me. And I am not in the minority. So then why is it, that to put this brand of 'hero' in the spotlight all the time, every other equally deserving character is pushed into the shadow areas of the stage? I'll speak specifically of the male leads. Swayam is my idea of someone I would want to learn a lot of things from, patience, resilience, maturity...that makes 'hero' for lack of a better word, for me. And even in practical terms he is D3's other male lead. Then why is it that he never gets the spotlight? Is he any less likeable or liked as a character? Is Shantanu any less deserving an actor or dancer? No offense meant to anyone, but from where I'm looking, for me he's the best in both departments in the entire cast. And even in terms of popularity there've been enough instances for us to know he stands quite upright even in that regard. Then why is it that he never gets the spotlight he deserves as the other male lead apart from Rey? This larger point apart, one look at what's happened to his character in recent episodes also has a lot to upset a lot of people. Simply put, why would Swayam, known and acknowledged to be the most original and romantic lover in the gang, need to ask someone else for tips to 'impress' the girl who's already in love with him? Why would he need to beg and plead for ideas when for two years he's been the one person who understood that girl better than anyone else?
This isn't even only about Swayam. I mention him as the other male lead. Sharon is a prominent female lead, one of the strongest female characters I've actually ever come across in general, D3 and beyond. But like Swayam, even her lot is eventually to sit on the sidelines and watch one person be glorified over and over. And even the gang...this is what they all do, take part in the glorification. Why, though? Like I said, sure, Rey has qualities a lot of people see as 'hero'-ish, sure he IS 'hero' for a lot of people, but at the same time for a LOT of people he isn't the ONLY 'hero' on D3. For many of us, this same central position is occupied by Swayam, for some of us, Sharon, for some SwaRon and even the gang...basically, all of them TOGETHER make D3 what it is, and not one individual character all the time. Then why is our point of view not given any consideration? Tracks, promos, promotions, everything is about one person. And even worse, on the show his hero-ising comes at other characters' cost so many times, like I just recounted in Swayam's case last week. Did I seriously sign up for watching a one-man show? Or was I delusional when I thought D3 is a team? Or did 'Team' switch over its spelling to a single, solitary 'I' while I was hibernating?
Bottomline: it isn't fair. And this is my personal point of view, no one has to agree. I request everyone to please be mature about this. This is NOT, I repeat, a Rey v/s Swayam or anyone v/s anyone thread, nor am I bashing anyone or talking against anyone. Just trying to speak up for people I feel deserve their time in the spotlight just as much as anyone else, if not more.
If you do not agree, you are welcome to express that disagreement in a civil manner or to leave this thread alone. And everyone is please requested to not get into arguments or fights. Let this discussion be a discussion, not a battleground.
