"Chanakya is a dream role"-Manish Wadhwa

Sunday, April 24, 2011 | 2:52:05 PM IST (+05:30 GMT) "Chanakya is a dream role"-Manish Wadhwa

Manish Wadhwa aka Chanakya of Imagine's popular show Chandragupta Maurya in a candid chat with Telly Buzz...

When Imagine decided to create the magic in Indian television with Chandragupta Maurya, the actor to play Chanakya was always in great hunt.

After several auditions and tests, Manish Wadhwa was finally tipped in to play the legendary character, and undoubtedly the magic worked.

The high ratings of the show proved the show to be a success and today we have Manish Wadhwa talking to Telly Buzz about his journey in the industry that finally destined him to do the role of Chanakya.

Excerpts...

How has your journey been so far in TV?
I would rather call it a journey in my acting career as acting is my passion and first love and the journey has been really nice. Before I moved into television, I was into theatre and my acting career took off from there.

After your negative role in Mitwa, did you ever expect such a historical role to come to you?
Nothing happens as expected in this industry and we never know what is going to happen with anybody. Even after the look test of Chanakya, I was not really sure of the character as it is a complicated one. Chanakya was neither completely positive nor negative. Whatever he did was keeping in mind his empire and I have never done a character like that. When I was in school I had studied about the character and I used to think about portraying it on screen. Today I can say that I am doing my dream role and I am completely satisfied.

Were you apprehensive in taking up this role?
Not really. Frankly speaking, when the role was finalized I first wondered about shaving my head (laughs). I had two minds whether to do it or not. Normally for films it is fine to use a wig, but on a daily basis, it is a bit difficult. The role is also such that nobody can refuse and hence I finally decided to take it up and shave off my head. And today I have to shave every alternate day.

How do you feel today essaying the epitome character of Chanakya?
I feel wonderful playing the character because this is like a dream come true and I have no words to express my feelings.

The show has got a great beginning and ratings are soaring high. How is the feeling in the camp?
I am happy that viewers like it which gives assurance that we are on the right track. But at the same time there is a responsibility that we have now to keep up the expectations.

How is to work with imagine?
Imagine is a very good channel and they are completely into the show. In fact, every channel has their dedication that is put into each show

What kind of preparations had you to put in for the role?
There are a lot of voice modulations in the character, but I am thankful to my theatre days and experience that I am able to do that well.

Did you have to perform any stunts?
Chanakya is not a warrior; he is intellectually solid and is a political person. He does everything with his mind.

How is it working with the prodigy Rushiraj Pawar?
Rushiraj is more than an actor and he knows how to be with his senior actors. He knows everything and grasps things very easily. He is a very hardworking boy and at times I feel that he was Chandragupta Maurya in his last birth. He is fun to be with and is ready to do what he is told to do.

How is your off-screen rapport with him?
I share a great rapport with him off screen as well and I would say we have a similar relation to what we have on screen. Whenever he feels exhausted or tired, I used to encourage him a lot to buck up and show his strength. And he is always ready for it.

How is it to shoot in Sagar City in Baroda?
It is really hot these days and I feel the climate is drier than in Mumbai. It is like another Film City.

What can we look forward in the track now?
The new track revolves around the new teachers in Maurya's life where he will be trained and set for his Vir Yatra.

Your memorable scene in Chandragupta Maurya till now.
The introduction scene was a tough one to do because we were shooting the scene in water in the month of January. I had to stay in water for nearly four hours and the tough part was, I should not be seen shivering with cold while conveying the dialogues.

Any memorable fan interaction?
Actually I did not get much time for that as I am shooting here in Baroda. But I have been getting mails from my old friends about the performance. They have all been very positive.

What is your message to viewers?
Thank you so much for accepting me as Chanakya and also the show. Even though I shaved off my head, aapne mujhe aapke sar pe bitha diya (smiles). Thank you so much and keep watching the show.

Price Manish paid to play Chanakya

Neha Maheshwri

After doing numerous shows like Mitwa - Phool Kamal Ke,Aamrapali,Kohinoor, actor Manish Wadhva,is now playing Chanakya (famous for his political astuteness) in Imagine TVs Chandragupta Maurya. He has worked in historicals like Shaurya Aur Suhani and Rajkumar Aryan, however, the acclaimed character of Chanakya came to him at a price. The actor had to shave off his hair.I was in two minds about shaving myself bald. But the moment I used to think about the character,it gave me the push to go ahead with the decision. Talking about the preparations,Manish says,I tried reading some books, which eventually became difficult,as I began shooting for the show.My creative team and the script of the show have helped me immensely to understand the character and its background.Essaying a character becomes a cakewalk if you are convinced by it.I could have given anything to play Chanakya. But Chanakya is known to be an impassive ideologist who didnt let emotions deter or distract him,so how practical is Manish in real life I am both emotional and practical.I think every human has both the qualities but only the percentage of the two differs.I think Chanakya, too, was an emotional man or why would he care so much about his country. But he always kept his emotional side hidden.

Chandragupta Maurya to take the much-awaited leap..

Ashish Sharma enters the frame of things as the grown up Chandragupta in the Imagine show this week..

The diplomatic ruler and the master strategist in Chandragupta Maurya is born, as the Number 1 Imagine show is all set to enter the very interesting phase post the ten year leap.

With the introduction of Ashish Sharma as the grown up Chandragupta, the story line will focus on the intention of Chanakya (Manish Wadhwa) to weaken the Greek army by planting Chandragupta as part of their army.

The introductory sequence of Ashish we hear, has been shot in an extravagant manner in which Chandragupta is shown destroying the ammunitions of the Greek army. This is followed by a fight sequence wherein few soldiers in the Greek army realize that Chandragupta has joined their army to weaken it.

While the post leap story line will focus on the journey of Alexander's conquest over India, the pre leap portion of the story will end with an interesting sequence wherein the little boy Chandragupta tries to attack Dhananand (Sooraj Thapar). Viewers will also see the boy taking an oath before his master Chanakya that he will safeguard his mother land once he grows up. Ashish's introduction will be shown in this Saturday's episode.

When contacted, Ashish told us, "I am shooting from yesterday, and I am already enjoying what I am doing. I have gone through a lot of preparations for the role, and I hope viewers like me asChandragupta Maurya".

Catch the interesting post leap story in the Imagine show..

"Chandragupta Maurya was a great student"-Ashish Sharma

"Chandragupta Maurya was a great student"-Ashish Sharma

Ashish Sharma talks about him being the elder Chandragupta Maurya on Imagine...

After portraying the arduous character of Bhaiyyaji, Ashish Sharma is portraying the magnanimous role of Chandragupta Maurya on Imagine TV.

Ashish has taken up a role that Rushiraj Pawar has stamped in the minds of the audience. What were the challenges that Ashish faced when he stepped into the highest rated show onImagine TV?

In an exclusive conversation with TellyBuzz, Ashish speaks about his role in the show...

Enjoy the read...

How do you feel being back on small screen?
It is great to be back on the sets and I cannot imagine not being associated with a show sitting idle.

You are portraying a character which Rushiraj has created as the benchmark. Now the responsibility is on you.
Yes Rushiraj has done a fantabulous job and I have met him before he left the show. Rushiraj has left behind the job to me and thus the responsibilities are really high. Sometimes I really feel scared because people have the double expectations now.

Chandragupta Maurya is Imagine's highest rated show. How do you feel being a part of it?
It feels really great to be part of such a great show and the fact that it is the highest rated show makes me even more responsible. But frankly speaking I have never really given concern about the ratings because you do not know the criteria on which it is decided.

You are portraying the title role of the show for the first time. Were you nervous?
Not really, because at the end of the day I am portraying my role and finally doing my job. When somebody shows faith in you, the determination automatically comes.

There are a lot of stunts in the show; how are you preparing yourself for the character?
Since there are stunts I have got myself trained in Tai Chi and Kalaripayattu, also I have learnt horse-riding as well. Besides that I have read a lot about Chandragupta Maurya mainly the Greek History because it has more details from his point of view. Indian history has mainly dealt about Chanakya and his ideas.

What was the main challenge when you started doing the show?
The main challenge for me was being an individual I should not, in any way, resemble to the earlier character that I have done. For that, I had to work on my body language, my physique and my complete appearance. Since Chandra Gupta is a complete street kid who had learned everything through guerrilla warfare, I tried to take inputs from the character of Dastan from the movie Prince of Persia. To give a rough look, I grew my hair as well. First we thought to show the character bare chested, but later on we fitted the armour for the tough look.

Diction is one of the most important aspects when an actor is doing mythic and historic shows. Have you felt the difficulty in grasping the Sanskrit words in the normal conversation?
Since I am fluent in Hindi I did not have a difficulty in grasping the language.

How is the experience working with Manish Wadhwa?
He is a brilliant actor to work with. We play a lot of pranks on the sets and since he could not do it with Rushiraj, he is fulfilling his wishes with me (laughs).

Your promos have been really alluring. How has the response been?
The response has been mind blowing and I am glad that people are liking it.

How is the experience shooting in Baroda?
It is raining here and I was down with Malaria for some days. I do not have problem adjusting with the food because I have a restricted diet and cannot have anything and everything.

Any memorable incidents so far?
Actually I have not yet shot much to have memorable experiences. Perhaps after a few episodes I would be able to tell that.

Now that you are portraying the character of Chandragupta Maura, what is the quality in him that has attracted you the most?
Chandragupta Maurya was a great student and that one factor has really caught me. He strongly believes in the philosophy that one has to be a very good student.

After Gunahon Ka Devta, was it tough for you to get out of the skin of Bhaiyyaji as he was also a fearsome character?
It was tough initially because once you have lived that character for a long time it definitely is difficult to get yourself out of it. But now I have come out of it and purely concentrate on portraying Chandragupta.

What would you like to say to your fans?
I would like to tell them to keep watching the show and I will try to give them better always. I love you all.
