Thank you, my dear Adhya. I usually write only the EDT, but I saw the title of this thread and came in share my two bits with all of you.
I am glad you liked my take, and Suyash's too. But I am sure you would have noted the difference between his Devi and my Devi.
My Devi is not a silently suffering,self-sacrificing creature, of the kind beloved of the 1960s and 70s film makers. She is a strong woman, and she loves Ashoka without acknowledging it even to herself, and for good reasons. She knows that Ashoka will never love any other woman as he loves Kaurwaki, and she has the mental resilience and the courage to accept that and work around it by becoming their strongest and most protective well-wisher.
And to protect herself from the suffering that goes with unrequited love, she blocks that aspect out of her heart and mind. If only everyone who loved one-sidedly could do this, the world would be a much safer place. There would be no killings motivated by blind jealousy of the kind that are so frequent these days.
That is why I do not feel in the least sorry for Devi. She does not need pity, only empathy and admiration.
And no, she is NOT demeaning herself by behaving in a servile fashion with her sakhi Kaurwaki. When they are clearly like sisters, this constantly repeated comment irritates me no end.😡
