Shah Rukh to feature in wildlife conservation campaign

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 17, 2007 - 11:41 IST

Shah Rukh Khan will be seen in a wildlife conservation awareness campaign shortly. Sanskara Development Trust, along with the Asian Conservation Awareness Programme (ACAP) / WildAid, will launch a national educational awareness campaign on wildlife conservation. The campaign is a multi–media education and awareness campaign that aims to protect the future of the world's endangered wildlife by drastically reducing consumer demand for endangered species parts and products.

With the support of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), the campaign will run on leading television networks like Doordarshan, National Geographic, Discovery/Animal Planet, CNN IBN, NDTV, India TV, among others. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), Ministry of Civil Aviation, and Parliamentarians in India have also supported the campaign that will start with the broadcast of superstar Shah Rukh Khan's message across all international and domestic airports.

Shah Rukh highlights the challenges faced by forest guards in protecting India's wildlife in his message, "……… he is our nation's unsung hero - the Indian Forest Guard. He is a real life hero because he does this to save the jungle, and the animals that live there. ……. Day in and day out, he is matching wits & battling powerful enemies - wildlife poachers & timber smugglers, and he is willing to lay down his life for this".

"We hope that the momentum of this powerful and unique campaign will help compliment India's ongoing efforts to save its remaining wildlife and its threatened habitats." - Aneetaa (Tykee) Malhotra , Managing Trustee, Sanskara Development Trust & Senior Consultant, ACAP / WildAid

"With continuous and sustained support from Indian celebrities and by working in collaboration with the Indian Government, associations such as the AAI, media, businesses, conservationists and the public, ACAP in collaboration with Sanskara is building long term support for India's as well as the world's wildlife and natural heritage."- Steve Trent, Director of ACAP and founding Director of WildAid

Sanskara Development Trust is a non profit organization which aims to build support for the preservation of wildlife and its natural habitat through innovative programs and projects, working collectively with Governments, NGO's, Corporates and local communities.

Karan Johar's four biggies

By Taran Adarsh, July 18, 2007 - 09:18 IST

Here's a news-break and, as always, it's first on IndiaFM…

So what is Karan Johar planning next? He has his hands full with as many as four biggies. Yes, the leading film-maker is getting into mass production of films. To start with, there's a project with his erstwhile assistant Tarun Mansukhani. Reportedly, the film will star Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan in principal roles. "Right now, only Abhishek is confirmed. We're still in the process of finalizing the balance cast," Karan informs me.

There's another project, with veteran actor Prem Krishen's son Siddharth Malhotra in the director's seat. Siddharth had assisted Nikhil Advani in KAL HO NAA HO and Sooraj R. Barjatya in VIVAH. The casting, again, is under finalization. Plus, there's an animation film on the cards – the animation of his blockbuster hit KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI. But instead of humans, the film will feature animals in principal roles. This one's called KOOCHIE KOOCHIE HOTA HAI.

But the biggest project is, of course, helmed by Karan himself. Reportedly, it's titled KHAN. "I would love to have this title, but the fact is, the title is not with me," Karan divulges. Also, the film will reunite his favorite pair – SRK and Kajol – after K3G. "Yes, that's the cast I'd like to have in my film, but till everything is on paper, I wouldn't like to make an official comment on it," Karan sets the record straight.

A sip of Karan

Karan Johar feels he has broadened the profile of a director

He is here, there, everywhere except behind the camera. Didn't we know Karan Johar as a director? Today, he is a model, a host, a brand ambassador….the latest being a watch company, Timond which has appointed him as its worldwide brand am bassador.

"I feel I have broadened the profile of the director. Earlier, film-makers preferred to remain low profile out of shyness or policy. I have neither. I endorse products that I wear – like Timond – and I don't feel out of place in front of the camera," says Karan.

But in the same vein, he adds he is not asking others to follow. "Like my friend Adi (Aditya Chopra) doesn't want to be seen, so we should respect his point of view."Known for delivering escapist cinema with aplomb, Karan's first brush with cine reality in the form of "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna" failed to strike a chord with the Indian audience. "I don't consider "KANK" a failure.

The plot managed to raise debates and discussions. This is what a director wants."

Of late, his popular show "Koffee With Karan" is doing a kind of public relations exercise for films that are going to be released.

"It has happened with only two films "The Namesake" and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

But this has been the trend worldwide where hosts interview stars of films that are going to be released or are in news."

On his affinity with Shah Rukh Khan, Karan feels he is not limiting his creative options.

"I work with him not just because he is a bankable star, but because he is the best human being I have come across."

Karan is now writing the script for his next film. "It's at a very preliminary stage so I can't say whether it will be escapist or realistic."

Before that he would complete the animated version of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where Shah Rukh, Rani and Kajol will lend their voices.

SRK: Reel and Real life Hockey coach

Shah Rukh Khan played reel and real life hockey coach on the sets of his upcoming film Chak De India! Khan was an avid hockey player in his college days and used his experience to explain how the game is played to his team in the film.

Anjan Srivastav plays a member of the Hockey Board in the films. He told us that SRK himself took the initiative to introduce the game to everyone.

"SRK took the initiative and told us all about the game and how it is played. He told us about the fielding position of the players. He was trying to explain the game to the whole team with the help of pins and marbles. This was not a part of the film… he didn't have to do it," says Srivastav, "We had received a narration already but wanted us to know all about it… how it is played… what are the rules. And as a result we all got a lot more involved."

Anjan says that the King Khan was so enthusiastic about the project that he himself was seen practicing the game on the sets of Chak De India! "Even before the shoot started in Dhyan Chand Auditorium in Delhi, he took a small board on which he was playing hockey.

Along with it he was drawing a sketch in his mind of the ground where the match practice was done. He worked hard on this character."

Speaking about his role in the movie, the experienced actor says that although it isn't a lengthy role it has a lot of meat in it. "It's not that big character…My roles in my earlier films with SRK - Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Kabhi Ha Kabhi Na were longer…But this is a very important character. He is playing the role of a committee member of the Board of Directors and is considered to be responsible for the bad condition of hockey in India. I think the director, Shimit Amin, has depicted the attitude of board members who just take salaries but don't do any work to improve the game in the country very well," says Srivastav.

Chak De India! stars Shah Rukh Khan as the coach of a women's hockey team and TV host and model Vidya Malvade and is directed by Shimit Amin whose previous film Ab Tak Chappan received great reviews.
