SUMMARY

Rajeev Khandelwal is brimming with facts and knowledge when it comes to travelling. His penchant for adventure leads him to tread on a path less travelled upon. Even if it means roughing it in the wild terrains. In a candid chat with Screen, the television actor turned film star gives a glimpse of his avatar as a traveller

Q. 1 What do you enjoy the most about travelling ?

It's the journey, which I enjoy the most. It's about reaching the destination, in the best possible and exciting manner. For instance, one could just fly to Leh, but the real fun is when you actually drive to Leh from Chandigarh, or from Srinagar. It's not just exploring the place, but meeting different kinds of people, getting a glimpse of their lifestyle and being with nature, all by yourself. For me, travelling has been more about self-discovery.

Q. 2 So, you like to take the route less travelled?

Yes. For example, if I have to drive from Srinagar to Leh, you can take the regular highway, but there's another route via Batalik Sector, which I discovered recently; it is very close to the Pakistan border. People do not take that route, because it's longer, isolated and scary. But I enjoyed taking that route. I like exploring places that people generally avoid, but I make sure that I am well-equipped for the trip.

Q. 3 Who do you usually travel with?

Mostly alone. I just take my car, and drive off . Besides, I sometimes go camping with my college friends, and of course, my wife Manjhiri and her friends.

Q. 4 When was the first time you made a solo trip?

I think it was the trip to Jim Corbett, for which I bought a car, Tata 207, which is a pick-up vehicle. It has a cabin in the front, and an open space outside, and meant for such travel trips. It was in 2006, a time when my character was pretty popular on television, so I wanted to break-free. I was smitten by the idea of travelling. It was an exciting journey as I met a lot of people, made friends and spotted a tiger. It was my first full-fledged independent trip, when I didn't have to depend on my father for pocket money or anything.

Q. 5 Which has been your most memorable trip?

It would be the trip that I took with my college friends, a few years back. We met in Delhi and went by the same Tata 207 pick-up truck. On a whim, we decided to climb a mountain, without having the right kind of equipment, and got lost somewhere in between. It took us six hours to climb down. It was a nine-day trip, and we camped out. I fell in love with a lot of Ladakhi girls. They would recognise me and I would ask them out the next day (laughs).

Q. 6 Do you agree, that travelling helps you gain lot of knowledge?

You accumulate a lot of knowledge about places and people when you travel. Though I've never tried to seek knowledge consciously, travel does add to your personality subtly. You become more wordly-wise and experienced, but that's not why I travel. Travelling helps me to just get comfortable in every situation, because as an actor also,

I don't watch TV at all: Rajeev Khandelwal

Mar 1, 2014, 12.00AM IST TNN[ Tanvi Trivedi ]

Rajeev Khandelwal
Rajeev Khandelwal, last seen hosting 'Sach Ka Saamna', finds it very funny when someone asks him why he is not doing television and admits that he is "bored of being asked the same question time and again. I started as a TV actor and of course, there will be offers from all mediums."

Khandelwal has moved on to doing films, but he surprises us when he says that he has never watched TV and still doesn't. "Even when I was doing TV, I never watched any shows except the one I was working in. And after I've started doing films I don't watch TV at all. The telly industry might be flourishing and there could be good stuff but I don't know about it because I am not following any show."

The actor shares that so far nothing has excited him enough. He says, "I don't know if I will do a reality show or a fiction show again. As far as I am concerned, I am only excited about a show if I feature in it so that I can gauge my performance."

I don't want to acknowledge that there are girls who find me good looking: Rajeev Khandelwal
Kashika Saxena,TNN | Mar 2, 2014, 12.40 AM IST

Rajeev Khandelwal is aware that he's taken many breaks - some voluntary and some not quite - but now he's sure that he wants to give back to the people who've religiously followed his work, and plans to either do television or increase the number of films he does. Excerpts from a chat:

Five years in the film industry, and five films. Are you happy with that? No, I am not. Not that I wanted to do 10 films, but I would have been happier if I had done eight or nine. The 'breaks' that people complain to me about are not breaks I have taken consciously. A lot of things happen behind the scenes that people don't know about. They think I'm very choosy. I am very careful about the films I do, but it's never been that I thought I'll take a break for a year. There have been some people who blocked and utilized my dates, asked me to get into a certain character, and I am talking about renowned names, immediately after Aamir, but for some reasons those projects never took off. And I was never kept in the loop. After my first long break, I got a little emotional, when Peter Gaya Kaam Se (which never released) was getting delayed. I thought that I'll look for good scripts and not pay much attention to the people who are making it. So, I signed one film and started shooting it and then realized that it's not just about the script, it's about the people too.

It's been a year since Table No 21 released. Do you worry that out of sight might become out of mind? No, because I am prepared to come as a newcomer every time I come out with a movie.

Isn't that taxing? It isn't. That's what I learnt in my television days. I had started living with a friend, Deepak Malwankar, a cinematographer, and I would call him my godbrother. When I was a nobody, I was staying at his place. He had a Mercedes at the time. Then I did Kahiin Toh Hoga and my character became super popular. Deepak used to tell me, 'Life mein ek cheez yaad rakhna. Tu kahan se aaya hai? Tu Jaipur se aaya hai na? Local train mein tu travel kar raha hai. Aaj tu popular ho gaya hai. Koi hum se kya chheen sakta hai? Humne toh jo kiya hai apne haathon se kiya hai. Remember one thing, hum log wapas karenge na. Ghoomenge local train mein. Jab humne hi kamaya hai toh we can do it all over again.' I think this got deeply ingrained in my head. Then, in television, people used to say the same thing. I have learnt from my own career that as long as you believe in yourself, you will not go wrong. Because I did Kahiin Toh Hoga, people told me you'll be a one-hit wonder, typecast, then they said don't quit a huge channel, then said don't do Left Right Left on a small channel. Don't do something which isn't romantic. Then, of course, I was taking breaks. And I don't feel that I was ever worried about holding on to my past laurels, which is why I could afford to take the breaks. After I did Aamir, people said 'why are you doingSach Ka Saamna on television? You just did a fantastic film, people are saying you're the next big thing'. So I thought, should I go by my conviction or by what they're saying? And people who say these things are probably the ones who think that life is about following formulas. I am pretty happy and I am not complaining, but yes, there will always be things that won't happen according to your plan, and that happens with everyone, so why regret it? The only thing that has bothered me is that I have kept people who have followed my body of work away from me for long intervals. People have been writing to me and following me religiously, and I feel really indebted to them for giving me that kind of space for such a long period of time. I also think that out of sight should be out of mind and they'll forget me, but they don't. So that builds up that emotional pressure on me to do something for them. So, I've been really toying with the idea of doing television. But there's nothing exciting coming my way.

Like a reality show? No, I have never been part of any reality show.

Something like Sach Ka Saamna? Nothing as exciting as Sach Ka Saamna came to me.

So a daily soap? No, not a daily soap.

Then what are you going to do on television? I don't know. I want to do things for people yaar. I want to come on TV every day at least. Something exciting may just come up.

So if an exciting daily soap comes to you, you'll do it? No. Unless someone promises me that after two years also they'll maintain the standards. Nobody will do that. See, money isn't the priority. I am really desperate to do television because at least that way, I can give back to people. So, this year, if nothing exciting comes from television, I'll probably increase the number of films I do. But for this year, I have two movies - Samrat And Co and Fever.

Do you ever want to do an out-and-out romantic film, since you started out as a romantic hero on TV, and have girls fawning over you? I am craving to do a romantic film, but not because it'll earn me female fans. I love the adulation from women. But I don't operate that way. If I did, I would have stuck to that image from Kahiin Toh Hoga. I don't even play to it, I don't even want to acknowledge that there are girls who think I am very good looking, so I deliberately keep myself away from it. Maybe that is why every time I see a girl looking at me and smiling, it does something to me. I want to do a romantic film because I did a show called Kahiin Toh Hoga, which was very, very romantic. Since then, that is one genre that has eluded me. In films, I never planned anything but I just wanted to do something that was different from my romantic image. Then, it wasn't planned, but Aamir happened and then Shaitan happened, and suddenly, the industry thought 'he is a hard-core performer'. And I started getting scripts that are complex. But now, I am craving to do a romantic film - one, because there is a huge demand for such kind of a role from people who follow my body of work. Secondly, I need to experiment with that genre. I don't know why people don't come to me with those light-hearted romcoms. They think Rajeev hai toh depth waali script yogi.
