Meet Shaitan ASAP! 😛😛😛
Expectations were high from Shaitan since it is an Anurag Kashyap production. Fortunately, Bejoy Nambiar's thrilling directorial debut delivers and how! The movie breathlessly entertains, thrills, intrigues, and shocks you from start-to-finish.
Kalki plays Los Angeles returned Amy. She cannot get over losing her mother. Her father, played by Rajit Kapoor, and her step-mother do not understand her crisis. Befriended by rich and spoilt drug addict KC (Gulshan Devaiya), she becomes a part of his gang comprising drug peddler Dash (Shiv Pandit), nerdy and kinky Parsi boy Zubin (Neil Bhoopalam), and wannabe-actress Tania (Keerti Kulhari). Life becomes a joy ride for them until an accident pits them against each other. A clever cop (Raj Kumar Yadav) offers to close the case if they bribe him. Things get complicated when honest cop (Rajeev Khandelwal) arrives on the scene. 😎 The rest of the film is for you to discover.
If you remember, Madhur Bhandarkar's Page 3 had a scene showing a rave party with rich, aimless youngsters being busted by cops. Think of Shaitan as a comprehensive extension of that segment. It also draws generously from real-life hit-and-run and kidnapping cases. It is a cautionary tale without being preachy. What you see in Shaitan, must not be imitated in real life! The media frenzy and the machinations and corruption of the police department are authentically depicted. The neatly executed chase sequences are the highlight of this crime caper. You are taken to nooks and crannies, posh, and shady areas of Mumbai. The pulse of the film is amazing. The intelligent and sometimes dirty dialogue will leave you in splits. A movie can be smart and funny and Shaitan proves that. These days, most movies are high on style and glamour but low on substance. Refreshingly, Shaitan scores aces in both areas. Shaitan is technically flawless. The camera angles, sound design, background score, and the pace are truly international. Mumbai is captured in all her grime and glory. Everything shown in the movie is realistic and identifiable. Prashant Pillai, Amar Mohile, and Anupam Roy's and Ranjit Barot's addictive, almost psychedelic score captures the mood of the film and its characters and takes the story forward. The non-linear and often in-the-mind narrative is pulled off with panache. The movie is peppered with references to Pulp Fiction and other films in that genre. It has the charm of a festival favourite indie-flick mixed with the right doze of commercial and masala elements. It is also reminiscent of recent Indian films such as Kaminey and Yeh Saali Zindagi. The sub-plots are layered and juxtaposed beautifully. You connect with the characters and empathize with them. The editing takes the movie to another level and is the best we have seen in recent times. The first half is thoroughly entertaining and shocking. The second half is equally engaging, surprising in parts, and wrapped up neatly but it gets a tad sentimental.
Shaitan has an eclectic cast comprising mainly newcomers. Everybody has done a splendid job. Rajeev Khandelwal was last seen in Raj Kumar Gupta's Aamir which was his debut film. The good-looking actor makes a superb comeback to the silver screen.😳😳 His powerful entry scene 😍 might get some whistles!🥳 With his hard-hitting portrayal of a no-nonsense and hot-headed cop, he takes you back to cop characters in films of the 1990s.
Kalki effectively brings out the vulnerability and complexities of her character. Her innocence and sadness is heart-rending. She even snorts cocaine like a pro! Neil Bhoopalam is excellent as Zubin. He is kinky but he cracks you up too and looks the part of a geek. He is quite likable because the goodness of his heart shines through. Shiv Pandit gets into the skin of his scheming, street-smart character. There is a suspicious air about him. Gulshan Devaiya plays the cocaine-snorting KC with aplomb. He is grey and unapologetic about it. Nikhil Chinappa makes a decent debut in a supporting role. Raj Kumar Yadav (of Ragini MMS and Love, Sex, aur Dhokha fame) has got typecast in scheming and corrupt roles and he is excellent once again. Pawan Malhotra is perfectly cast as a worldly-wise commissioner. He has some hard-hitting lines towards the end of the film. Sheetal Menon has few lines but makes her presence felt, nevertheless.😛😛 Rukhsar looks lovely and plays the glamour-struck and pushy elder sister with ease. Keerti Kulhari is sufficiently manipulative, sexy, and vulnerable. She was last seen as a coy character in Khichdi The Movie and she makes the transition to a comparatively bold character quite smoothly. Rajat Barmecha's scene is very entertaining and provides a break when the movie gets heavy and serious. His makeover proves that he is capable of doing different roles.
Shaitan is a near-perfect film and an absolute must-watch.😍 (hum toh kabse keh rahe hai 😆😆😆😆) It is cool, bold, whacky, and contemporary without being wannabe. One of the finest films of the year will blow your mind and you might want to watch it again 😍 to let it all sink in. 😛😛😛
