The movie is based on the Joshi Abhyankar murders that shook India in the late '80s. The promos tell us about five college kids who decide to have a wild night out. The Joshi Abhyankar murders were about five college students who were known for their bad behavior, and had finally turned into serial killers. They were hanged by the Government in 1980, after a murderous spree of two years.
Of course, there were no females in the gang, but we can consider that to be creative license. And then, the movie is just inspired from the murders, not based on them. It is also interesting to know that the movie is somewhat similar to Anurag Kashyap's Paanch, which had the same premise but never got released, because alternate cinema and independent movies were something unknown to the Indian audiences back then.
Frankly, the movie looks very hot. There's this neo noir look that the promos had, and the first look poster is something right out of a psychologist's ink blotter test. With such stellar actors like Rajeev Khandelwal, Kalki Koechlin and others in the movie, this one is surely going to be an interesting one.
The movie has already garnered enough buzz with the promos that speak of the decadent lifestyle that youth can lead. It also gained some buzz when the news of the first female-to-female kiss and a male-to-male kiss was leaked out into the media. The news was accompanied with screen grabs. Apparently, the main characters in the movie play a truth or dare game and when they lose, they have to kiss the other same sex person. The movie also has a underwater sequence, that many consider to be one of the most beautiful and sensible underwater sequence to be shot in Bollywood.
Some of the dialogues like the one that says 'There are some friends who one calls at two in the night and some that are called only at two in the night' and 'do you have a girlfriend? No, she is dead, Did you kill her?' have aroused the interest of the general public in the movie's content. With a stylish director like Beejoy Nambiar at the helm, this one should be more than just style and substance.
Also, looking at the other movies that Anurag Kashyap has been involved in, you can be sure that this one will be another shocker, just like the ones that we have come to expect from this brand of cinema now.
Recently, a foreign newspaper termed Anurag Kashyap as a film maker who has taken Bollywood to newer heights and avenues. People who do not know much about Bollywood would think that Anurag Kashyap has a long winding resume as a film maker. The fact of the matter is that he has not made more than fifteen movies, but what still makes him tick is the type of movies that he makes. He has written movies like Satya, Kaun, Water, Dev D, Gulal and has directed movies like Black Friday, No Smoking, Return of Hanuman, Dev D, Gulaal and Mumbai Cutting. After his successful time as a screenwriter and director, he decided to go producer with the movie Shaitan. Here is a detailed preview of Shaitan, the movie.
Shaitan is directed by Beejoy Nambiar, who had previously assisted Mani Ratnam for the movie Guru. It stars Rajeev Khandelwal, Kalki Koechlin, Shiv Pandit, Neil Bhoopalam, Gulshan Devaiya, Kirti Kulhari, Rajit Kapoor, Rajat Barmecha, Pawan Malhotra, Nikhil Chinappa and others.
The movie has around thirteen songs, and we are not quite sure whether they are in the background or are they actually have characters in the movie singing it. Whatever the case may be, the songs are some of the most progressive songs to ever come out of Bollywood. The thirteen songs are a mixture of rock, pop, trance and almost every revolutionary music style that you have heard.
We look forward to the release of this movie, and you know where you need to visit to have unbiased reviews for this one!
