Thank you everyone for the appreciation so far. Believe it or not, I still haven't decided how I want to take the story forward and that means the next chapter will definitely be delayed. In the meantime, hope you enjoy this action packed update!

Chapter 5
The heavy footsteps on the dry leaves at the steps of the temple echoed ominously as the Shrivastav family huddled together to evade the Brahmarakshas. Yug pulled out his gun and started to shoot the Brahmarakshas but every bullet that hit him, burned to ashes and the demon approached them undeterred. As they tried to move farther and farther away from him, Aparajita tripped Raina over her foot and made her fall, right in front of the Brahmarakshas. Ved and Yug rushed to Raina's aid but the Brahmarakshas picked them up and tossed them away. Nalin and Aditya tried next but the Brahmarakshas caught them both by their necks and strangled them mid air.
Raina immediately stepped up and said, "It's a bride you want, isn't it? Look! Here I am! I have sindoor in the parting of my hair, I am wearing a mangalsutra. Let them go. Come get me!" "Raina! Nooo!" Mohini and Naina yelled but it was too late. The Brahmarakshas had focused his attention on Raina. He threw Nalin and Aditya away and reached for Raina.
Mohini reached for the trishul from within the temple to go to Raina's aid but Aparajita stopped her, "No Mohini! That's dangerous!" "Apu! He has caught Raina! We have to save her. Leave me!" Apu forcefully took the trishul from Mohini. This was her only chance to get rid of the Brahmarakshas, sell off her property here and leave this cursed place forever. It was a bonus if Raina got killed. Her dark secrets would forever remain buried.
"No Mohini! Listen to me!" Mohini looked at her bewildered. "I.. I.. Actually.. Yes! Remember Phooli said that the trishul can no longer harm him?" Apu asked. "So you want me to just stand by and watch as he kills Raina?" Mohini asked. The Brahmarakshas had Raina in a strangle hold and Raina was choking. As she used whatever strength she had left in her limbs to fight his hold, the raksha thread that Rishabh had tied on her hand came in contact with the Brahmarakshas' hand and he let go of her, howling in pain. Raina dropped to the floor and struggled to draw air into her lungs.
Aparajita was furious, "Why did he let her go?" She didn't realize she had said it out loud till she saw the look of suspicion on Mohini's face. "I.. I.. I mean, I wonder what made him let go of her so we can use that to defend ourselves," she tried to explain but Mohini's face gave away the fact that she wasn't ready to believe her explanation. Mohini, Naina and Mitali rushed to Raina's aide as Aparajita stood there thinking of a way to trap Raina again.
"Aparajita!!" the bestial growl was unmistakeable. Aparajita turned shocked to find that the beast had spotted her after all. She immediately ran toward Raina, forgetting her fake injury, hoping that the sight of Raina's sindoor and mangalsutra would distract the beast. But before the beast could charge, Rishabh attacked him with the trishul.
Though momentarily stunned, the beast effortlessly pulled out the trishul lodged into his side and threw it aside. Rishabh, in the meantime, had rushed to check on Raina. The relief of seeing her safe had him pull her into his arms and hold her tight. She hugged him right back. "Are you okay? Are you okay? Are you hurt?" he asked her over and over again. She nodded her head to say she was okay. Just then the Brahmarakshas pounced on them. He caught Rishabh by his neck and pulled him away from Raina. Raina screamed as she tried to reach for Rishabh. The Brahmarakshas had Rishabh dangling mid air and with his other paw, he hit him so hard, he sliced his skin across his torso in a big gash that started to ooze blood before tossing Rishabh to the side.
"RISHABHHH!!!" Raina screamed as she ran to him, unmindful of the danger she was putting herself in.
Enraged, the Brahmarakshas reached for Aparajita next. He picked her up and raised her mid air, strangling her. As Aparajita struggled to escape, Raina helped Rishabh back on his feet. Just then, Phooli arrived, carrying the book of the Brahmarakshas..
"Sahab, memsahib!" she cried, rushing to Rishabh and Raina. "I found it. I found the last page! It was in Sanjay sahab's old haveli. This is it!" They quickly put the pieces together and read through it.
Just as Aparajita felt darkness closing in on her, the Brahmarakshas let go of her and she fell to the ground, hitting her head and losing consciousness.
Phooli moved the rest of the family members away while Rishabh and Raina circled the Brahmarakshas, throwing sindoor from the Goddess' feet on him and chanting a mantra. The beast howled and groaned in agony but he couldn't use any of his powers. He tried to turn into a ball of fire, into a ball of ashes, but nothing worked. The sindoor covering him foiled all his attempts and the incantation that Rishabh and Raina were chanting together set him on fire from within, a fire he could not control or escape. Everyone else watched in horror as the Brahmarakshas screamed and a huge black shadow seemed to come out of his being.
Raina took the plate of sindoor and threw it on the black shadow. The black shadow hurtled toward her with full force but mustering all the energy left in him, Rishabh threw himself in front of Raina. The black shadow sent Rishabh flying across the floor and straight at the feet of the Goddess' idol. Covered in blood and hurting like death, Rishabh crashed to the floor in a heap. Raina ran to check on him and sat down beside him. She took his hand in hers and as she tried to raise his head onto her lap, her mangalsutra touched the feet of the idol. All of a sudden, a bright white light emanated from the Goddess' idol and coalesced into a sphere.
The bright sphere clashed with the pitch black shadow and the earth shook with the intensity. Rishabh and Raina were caught right in the middle of this explosion of supernatural energies. Their families yelled for them to move away but they couldn't move. Rishabh tried to push Raina away to safety but he couldn't budge her. It was as if they were being pulled apart and pushed together at the same time by opposing forces. Forces that were so powerful that they couldn't stand a chance.
Then Rishabh remembered the Aghori baba's words - that they had to be together to destroy the demon. They were Shiv and Shakti - incomplete without each other and invincible together. Maybe the time had come for the Baba's words to be put to test. Rishabh hugged Raina as tight as he possibly could and Raina clung onto him, not willing to let go of each other even if it was death that awaited them at the end of this. "Whatever happens, I'll never let you go Raina! I'll never let you go," Rishabh confessed to her as the lights and sounds increased to blinding, deafening proportions and the whole world seemed to explode around them while they held onto each other tight.
When the explosion was over, an eerie stillness and silence permeated the air and slowly, everyone came out of their shock and fear. "Are you okay?" They both asked each other the at the same time. They both nodded in response to the other's question. Rishabh helped Raina up and as they walked toward the rest of their family, they noticed the body lying on the floor. There was no trace of Rakshas left in the body.
"This is our Sanjay Thakur Sahab," Phooli said, her voice sorrowful. "The demon in him has been vanquished. Now he is just a human caught mid way between this world and the other. I request all of you to please permit us villagers to perform his last rites so that this time his soul attains salvation." Rishabh looked at Raina who nodded her head. The villagers came in and took away Sanjay's body.
"Rishabh! You are bleeding so much. We need to get you to the hospital," Raina said. Even as she said it, Rishabh collapsed on the ground unconscious.
