"To you I may be that particularly nasty, grumpy old man, but I'm just the heir to the philosophy of George Edward Moore that sits debating on every possible solution to his open-question argument as the fluffy white cloud unfurls itself before my eyes.

You say the smoke troubles you. I say, stay away!

You will not get my point, ever. You have not relished the maddening fragrance of my tawny nectar. You have not been deluged in that hitting, heavenly taste of tobacco.

Addiction, is it?

I call it a gentleman's necessity. Of course I never go below brand X, so no worries there.

What? Don't I know of the health hazards? Of course I do! How can I not know about all those with the whole lot of you pushing it down my throat?

But do you know what it has done for me? Do you know of the obstacles of life have I crossed with just these little packets by my side? Can you imagine even a single day without the comforting roll of your lips?

Yeah, you can.

Anyways I expect you to understand just one thing- smoking is my birthright and I shall have it."

Well, that's what nearly all smokers around us have got to say.

But. Just for the sake of the personal boosts that smokers might have received from tobacco, should we allow the drug to rage across our world destroying lives of not only the addicted but also perhaps their families?

As we gather here today on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, let us pledge to understand the various baneful effects of tobacco on our lives.

Let us pledge to work as one to control and eventually eradicate the addiction, a danger to society and individuals alike from the face of the earth.

Going by that, we'd like to ask you to use the siggy below to show your support for the worldwide Anti-Tobacco programme.

Most people start smoking in their teenage years, nearly always driven by an urge to show off in front of their 'cooler' friends. The sense of achievement after the first smoke becomes the incentive for the next one, the one after that, and then another. It goes on.

This stage is known as the Experimental Smoking Stage. This one is more or less non-addictive and people find it easiest to quit from here.

Other prominent reasons for people taking up smoking include influence of their surroundings and advertisements promoting the habit. Visualize a boy looking at his father with admiration as he exhales a perfect smoke ring while on television a crowd lauds a man who stands with a cigarette to his mouth after saving a pretty girl.

The next stage is called the Addiction or the Realization Stage. In this stage the person becomes the 'Determined Smoker'.

Now they need a cigarette when they wake up. They need a cigarette before they go to bed. They need a cigarette when they're walking. They need a cigarette when they're sitting.

Basically their lives rotate about those teeny bits of tobacco.

This is the time when a person smokes at the rate of a pack a day and may sometimes become a chain smoker. This is the stage when the person is psychologically imprisoned in the prison of addiction.

The Addiction phase is followed the stage when the person is literally bored of smoking, but is bound by habit. He would keep smoking out of sheer practice. This is known as the Self-Disgusted Stage.

In this phase the person is prone to deliberate in his mind of the various health hazards he's exposing himself and the people around him to. He recognizes the threats but remains involuntarily unyielding.

Smoking is no longer a welcome diversion from the troubles of life. It has become a dreary routine. This is the phase, when the physical illnesses also step in, making the whole affair a rather unpleasant one.

And finally comes the last phase- the Resigned Smoking Stage or the Quitter's Stage. This is the stage when the smoker has resigned himself to the act that he is a smoker.

The people around him have also got used to the tufts of smoke and the little stubs lying, and have given up on the hope that he shall ever quit.

This smoker might just quit one day. If he doesn't, well, he won't.

O_o Did You Know? o_O

Smoking makes the risk of heart attack of a smoker 200-400% more than that of a non-smoker.

Cigar is the deadliest form of tobacco in existence.

Research suggests the smoking rate of the youth decreases two to three time more readily than that of adults.
