Hey everyone. I was just reading this book called Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho (still reading it btw, got 100 pages more to go). It's basically about a girl named Maria, who has always been betrayed in love. She has always been used by every guy she loved. They use her to get physical, and then drop her down like trash. And Maria being the innocent girl that she is, couldn't take it. Maybe that's why she decided to choose the dark path, meaning, becoming a prostitute. What I liked most about this novel is that, though we must have seen hindi films where a girl has no other option but to become one, but in reality, it isn't like that. Girls who choose to become one, could have either said a yes or no. They had an option. Saying that they have no means of earning, and are helpless, wouldn't count. They can always clean the roads, work as servants. This is what Maria has explained. She herself doesn't know why she chose this field. Maybe because she felt she had nothing to lose. If the reason was to earn money, then it wasn't a good excuse. She had other ways of doing it. She didn't have the feeling of self-pity within her. She knew she could quit anytime. Everyone in her life and shown her what pain is, and that made her emerge as a stronger woman, who knew how to seperate personal and professional life. And things changed for her when she met a young painter, who saw in her a woman, none of the previous men had seen in her. And now she is to choose between following the dark path, or to leave it all behind, and start a new life.
It's a daring novel, and maybe you'd find me young for reading such novels, but somewhere, Maria's character really fascinates me. I think you all should give it a read, if you haven't already.

@Radz- It sure is. It's pretty interesting. Might be slow, but it somehow sucks you into the book. This writer is simply amazing. You should give it a try sometime.
