I really don't think "Wuthering Heights" is over-rated. I'm probably biased since I based a huge assignment around it but the dynamics of and between the characters, the parallel structure and the lyrical prose present in WH is hard to accomplish nowadays.

I also disagree with the nomination "1984" by G.Orwell as an over-rated book. The diction, imagery, syntax, symbolism and style is top-notch. The human allegory is accentuated throughout the book. The storyline/plot is strong, leaving little room for plotholes. It also highlights on the importance of language in any society and how language can be used to manipulate people or cottonize wounds. What exactly is it about the book that makes it over-rated? 😕
Twilight is most definitely over-rated. It is equivalent to a fanfiction of Anne Rice's better works. The writing contains so much purple prose and has multiple grammatical errors. Also, Meyer abuses her thesaurus like there's no tomorrow; the grand literary rules "Never use a long word where a short one will do" and "If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out" are clearly too inferior for Meyer to follow.
"The House of the Spirits" by I. Allende fits the criteria quite nicely, as well. I really fail to see what is so good about it that the IBO has adopted it as a major part of the cirriculum. It was almost like reading "One Hundred Years of Solitude" from a feminine perspective with socialist commentary added. Difference is Marquez made the magic realism seem interesting yet believable; Allende, on the other hand, failed to create the blase tone regarding the magical elements of the plot.
Furthermore, "Reading Lolita in Tehran" is as over-rated as they come. RLT consists of an extremely boring lecture on numerous books. The writing style is hard to follow with Nafizi jumping to and from one topic to another without providing constant links. I clearly don't see why anyone would want to slog through her ostensible insights (which are scattered around) on the books/authors when one could buy the study guide of said book(s).
I'd say Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" is semi-overated. I was literally screaming at the book for something - anything - to happen. The prose, while eloquent, is not interesting enough to maintain interest; however, the character development of Miss. Havisham and Estella more than covers up for this.

A lot of people love Catcher in the Rye but Satanic verses is famous only because of the controversy it created. I am not muslim.

Well mostly I never tend to find books over rated...actually that is not true...I find most Shakespeare plays made out to be too much....I do tend to like the books, after we do analysis on it...Like in our class with Catcher In A Rye.
