Idol talk

Ek aur villian
Aur Devdas, Sudhir Mishra's take on Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's Devdas mixed with Shakespeare's Hamlet just got a little more interesting.

Mishra has roped in filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar to portray a character not present in either of the classics. Manjrekar will play a character with sinister undertones, giving Aur Devdas a villainous streak.

Explains Mishra, "Manjrekar will play the role of the hero's scheming uncle. His character is that like one of the redundant superfluous parasites that are present in present-day politics No one knows why such people are around. Or what they mean to achieve. But they are there… feeding off our political system and destroying it."

But Manjrekar has been absent from the scene since quite sometime now, so why did Mishra zero in on Manjrekar to play the role? "Manjrekar is a very good actor.

Let's not forget that his roots are in theatre. Before mobbing into direction, he has given some terrific performances. I felt Mahesh was the one who could bring the much-needed sense of sinister streak to the role," he says. Manjrekar's career as a filmmaker seems to have hit a dead end lately.

He has taken up acting again with roles in a couple of Sanjay Gupta's films. Mishra's film is expected to start Manjrekar's new innings as an actor.
