A movie is nothing without the lines spoken by the characters in the film. Delivered by brilliant actresses and actors, many of these lines become synonymous with certain characters and films. Certain lines just manage to become legendary, to the point where when you hear them you are immediately drawn back into the story of the film and the scene begins to replay in your mind. After much thought and much deliberation, we now present BollySpice's List of the '25 Legendary Lines of Bollywood Cinema'.
"Bade bade deshon mein, aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hai" - Spoken by Raj/Shahrukh Khan (Film: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995) A phrase that even non-Hindi speakers come to recognize because they have seen that wonderful film so many times. This line whenever heard or thought of will always take you back into the romance of Raj and Simran .
"Basanti, In kutto ke samne mat nachna" - Spoken by Veeru/Dharmendra (Film: Sholay, 1975) Veeru stands up for his ladylove time and time again in
Sholay but this quote takes the cake!
"Babuji ne kaha Paro ko chod do, Paro ne kaha sharab ko chod do, tum keh rahi ho ghar chod do, ek din ayega jab woh kahe ga yeh duniya chod do.." - Spoken by Devdas/Shahrukh Khan (Film: Devdas, 2002) In the midst of a film that boasts of poetic beauty, this line has to be the most everlasting and touching of the entire film--one that stays with you until the closing credits roll and beyond.
"Pura naam: Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, baap ka naam: Dinanath Chauhan, maa ka naam: Suhasini Chauhan, gaon: Mandwa, umar: chhattis saal" - Spoken by Vijay/Amitabh Bachchan (Film: Agneepath, 1990) This is perhaps the most classic and legendary intro scene in Mr. Bachchan's career where he gives the famous dialogue of his biodata. Hearing this dialogue still sends chills down everyone's spines. It has become such a cult dialogue because of Mr. Bachchan's superb expressions and dialogue delivery all throughout the scene.
"Dosti ki hai--nibhani toh padegi" - Spoken by Prem/Salman Khan (Film: Maine Pyaar Kiya, 1989) Salman Khan became an instant lover-boy as he uttered these words and crawled his way into the hearts of many.
"Yeh koi maamuli ittefaaq nahin hai, yeh hai Allah ki karishma." - Spoken by Saamiya/Rani Mukerji (Film: Veer-Zaara, 2005) In a single line, Rani Mukerji proves just how powerful and haunting she can make a simple line seem.
"Kitne aadmi the?" - Spoken by Gabbar Singh/Amjad Khan (Film: Sholay, 1975) The most classic entry of any villain in Bollywood history accompanied with the excellent dialogue delivery, and voice modulations of Amjad Khan, playing the most iconic character in the history of Hindi cinema, Gabbar Singh.
"Pyar sirf ek bar hota hai aur shaadi bhi ekhi baar hota hai" - Spoken by Rahul/Shah Rukh Khan (Film: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,1998) Rahul says this about Tina but in the end he does love more than once and does marry more than once. Or is it that he really did only love once and it was always Anjali?
"Yeh tumhare baap ka ghar nahin, police station hai, is liye sidhi tahrah khade raho" - Spoken by Vijay/Amitabh Bachchan (Film: Zanjeer, 1973) As Inspector Vijay Khanna, even in the 70's Big B easily created iconic quotes with his deep baritone and everlasting voice.
"Zindagi mein kuch banna ho, Kuch hasil karna ho, Kuch jeetna ho, To hamesha apne dil ki suno, Aur ager dil se bhi koi jawaab na aaye ... To apni aankhein band karke apni Maa aur Baba ka naam lo ... Phir dekhna tum her manzil paa sakoge, Her mushkil aasan ho jayegi, Jeet tumhari hogi ..... Sirf tumhari..." - Spoken by Rahul/Shahrukh Khan(Film: Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham, 2001) A classic speech that when you first hear it in the movie is great but its impact the second time it is spoken is incredible. When Rahul's son says it and then points out Rohan and you see the realization on Rahul's face; Brilliant!
"Mogambo khush hua!" - Spoken by Mogambo/Amrish Puri (Film: Mr. India, 1987) With a deliciously evil performance, Amrish Puri scared the heebie-jeebie's out of all of us in this legendary film. Time and time again, this quote has been voted absolutely legendary.
"Nafrat hai tumhe apne aap se, apne zindagi se, apne nakamiyaabi se." - Spoken by Rhea/Preity Zinta (Film: Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, 2006) Powerful and hard-hitting, it possesses all the qualities of a legendary line. In addition, Preity Zinta's delivery increased its impact tenfold.
"Kutte! Kamine! Mein tera khoon pi jaaonga!" - Spoken by Veeru/Dharmendra (Film: Sholay, 1975)Yet again, Sholay makes the list and proves just how iconic it really is!
"K.. K.. K...Kiran" - Spoken by Rahul/Shahrukh Khan (Film: Darr, 1993) When you think of an obsessive Bollywood psychopath, only Shahrukh Khan in 'Darr' comes to mind! With his inimitable stutter, SRK made this line K-k-k...Klassic!
"Yeh jism pyaar karna nahi jaanta. jaanta jai toh sirf bhook. Jism ki bhook" - Spoken by Sonia/Bipasha Basu (Film: Jism, 2003) At her bold and seductive best, Bipasha Basu lent her signature pout to this line which left some drooling and others wide-eyed in disbelief.
"Rahul..naam toh suna hoga?" - Spoken by Rahul/Shah Rukh Khan (Film: Dil To Pagal Hai, 1997) With his usual charm, SRK delivers this line with ease. Coincidentally, he's donned the name 'Rahul' so often over the years that it's hard to keep track anymore!
"Koi pyaar kare toh tumse kare. Tume Jaise ho wase kare. Agar koi tumhe badal ke pyar kare, toh woh pyaar nahi sauda kare. Aur Saaheba Pyar mein sauda nahi." - Spoken by Sameer/Jugal Hansraj and Sanjana/Kim Sharma (Film: Mohabbatein, 2000) A line that every person should listen to, remember and follow with their whole hearts!
"Sarhad paar ek aisa shaaks rehta hain jo aap ke liye apni jaan de dega" - Spoken by Veer/Shahrukh Khan(Film: Veer Zaara, 2004) One of the most romantic lines ever said in a film, it makes the heart melt just thinking of Veer saying it to Zaara.
"Rishtey mein toh hum tumhare baap lagte hain, naam hai Shahenshah" - Spoken by Shahenshah/Amitabh Bachchan (Film: Shahenshah, 1988) Yet another all time classic Big B dialogue. In his famous baritone voice, he once again shows that he is above one and all as he puts down a peasant of a human by spitting this dialogue.
"Kabhi kabhi kuch jeetne ke liye kuch haar na parta hai, aur haar ke jeetne wale ko Baazigar kehte hain" -Spoken by Ajay/Shahrukh Khan (Film: Baazigar, 1993) What is it about King Khan that sees him bring yet another quote to this list? Baazigar o baazigar, SRK, you really are a jaadugar (magician)!
"Mere paas paisa hai, bangla hai, gaadi hai, kya hai tumhaare paas? Mere pass MAA hai!" - Spoken by Ravi/Shashi Kapoor (Film: Deewar, 1975) A famous argument between two brothers where Mr. Bachchan is outstaged by Shashi Kapoor words; the memorable dialogue about his mother.
"Aaj mujhe iss baat ka yakeen ho gaya ki zindagi bhi hamari filmon ki tarah hoti hai...zindagi mein bhi 'happys endings' ho sakte hai. Aur agar 'happys endings' naa ho, toh iss matlab yeh hai ki llife abhi khatam nahin hui...Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost!" - Spoken by Om/Shahrukh Khan (Film: Om Shanti Om, 2007) Om didn't get his happy ending in his previous life and this quote represents his rebirth as his story was yet to be completed.
"Don ka intezaar to baara mulko ki police kar rahi hai. Lekin Don ko pakadna muskhil he nahi, namumkin bhi hai" - Spoken by Don/Amitabh Bachchan (Film: Don, 1978) This line represented Don's influence, confidence and his G credibility in the movie. The line has its own rapport with the movie Don, and is unforgettable, that Farhan Akhtar couldn't resist using that line himself for his remake!
"Aaj...Aaj ek Haseen aur baant loon...Aaj ek Dua aur mang loon...Aaj ek aansoo aur pee loon...Aaj ek Zindagi aur ji loon...Aaj ek Sapna aur dekh loon...Aaj...Kya pata, Kal Ho Naa Ho!" - Spoken by Aman/Shahrukh Khan (Film: Kal Ho Naa Ho, 2003) To me this line does not just represent the relationships amongst characters in Kal Ho Na Ho but makes the audience realize that sometimes we take life for granted. This famous quote is the moral behind Kal Ho Na Ho.
"Tere dil mein meri saason ko panaah mil jaaye, tere ishq mein meri jaan fanaa ho jaye." - Spoken by Zooni/Kajol (Film: Fanaa, 2006) Amongst all the shayari dispersed throughout the film, this one has to be the most evocative. Simple and eloquent, its romance at its finest!
