Bollywood box-office report of the week
The only worthwhile new release of the coming Friday is going to be Radha Pushpa Entertainments' 26TH JULY AT BARISTA. With Rohini Hattangady being the only known name associated with the film, nothing much is expected from the Mohan Sharma directed venture.
Last week's Subhash Ghai directed, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah and newcomer Anurag Sinha starrer BLACK & WHITE, failed to impress the audience. It must be mentioned here that the initial of BLACK & WHITE was never expected to be great but was much lower than the predictions. The first day in Bombay was dull and in other circuits too the opening was below the mark almost everywhere. However, with by and large positive reviews and the extremely reasonable 7-8 crore budget, BLACK & WHITE is likely to be safe project. While on the Overseas, the full numbers are still awaited, but there is news that BLACK & WHITE has had a very ordinary weekend in the UK grossing $51,220.
With another open week, yet again the focus of attention was Ashutosh Gowariker's Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer, JODHAA AKBAR. For the third consecutive week, it was the same story, rewarding weekend followed by ordinary weekdays. But the net outcome is another stable week, with JODHAA AKBAR collecting 1.80 crores from Bombay, 52 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.10 lakhs from Baroda, 1.75 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 8.10 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.60 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.90 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.35 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.30 lakhs from Solapur, 5.60 lakhs from Nasik, 95 lakhs from Delhi city, 7 lakhs from Noida, 4.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.20 lakhs from Agra, 1.10 lakhs from Aligarh, 15.35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.85 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh each from Panipat and Raipur, 9.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.15 lakhs from Amravati, 16.25 lakhs from Indore, 1.75 lakhs from Bhopal, 1.70 lakhs from Guwahati,
33.50 lakhs from Calcutta and 31.70 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding another 9 crores, JODHAA AKBAR has netted a healthy 48 crores in three weeks from India. The UTV venture is a now a semi-hit in India (superhit in Bombay) and will improve its rating further in the weeks to come. In the Overseas, JODHAA AKBAR is already a blockbuster, grossing an extraordinary $3,232,773 from the US and an excellent $1,870,544 from UK.
Meanwhile MITHYA surprises with another quite stable week. The Rajat Kapoor directed film collected 7 lakhs from Bombay, 1 lakh from Ahmedabad, 9 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.40 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad and 2.70 lakhs from Gurgaon. Adding another 35 lakhs, MITHYA has so far netted around 5.75 crores from India. It now appears that MITHYA will touch the above average status from India by next week. And that is a great achievement considering the cast, budget and the genre.
Coming to Rohit Shetty's SUNDAY, the film continues to trickle in the collections, taking advantage of the open weeks. Adding another 20 lakhs, SUNDAY has now netted slightly in excess of 21 crores in six weeks from India. However, the Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia starrer remains in the below average category. SUNDAY has grossed a decent $387,898, from UK, taking into account the overseas pull of the stars involved.
Aamir Khan's directorial debut venture, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, shows tremendous sustaining power, collecting 9.50 lakhs from Bombay, 2.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 6.55 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.10 lakhs from Noida, 1 lakh from Ghaziabad and Gurgaon, 2.10 lakhs from Nagpur. With another 40 lakhs in its kitty during the eleventh week, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR goes on to an excellent 60.30 crores in India. The Darsheel, Aamir and Tisca starrer is a blockbuster hit in India and a hit in the Overseas, grossing $1,223,869 from US and $675,177 from UK.
It is now certain that Firoz Nadiadwala's Anees Bazmee directed blockbuster hit WELCOME will end its run, netting around 75 crores from India. Just for records, the Feroze Khan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer managed to add another 15 lakhs during its latest outing and the eleven week total from India stands at around 74.90 crores. WELCOME is already a superhit in the Overseas.
