Rajputs threaten to boycott 'Jodhaa Akbar'

Ashutosh Gowariker's historical epic 'Jodhaa Akbar' is facing trouble, with the Rajput community of Rajasthan threatening to stall the release of the movie in the state.
The community says Gowariker has distorted facts in his magnum opus which is to be released Feb 15.
Narendra Singh Rajawat, head of the Rajput Sabha, said Gowariker is presenting Jodhabai as Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar's wife, which is factually incorrect. He also said that Jodhabai was not the daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amber near Jaipur as shown in the film.
Jodhabai was the daughter of Motaraja Udai Singh of Marwar and was married to Akbar's son Salim alias Jehangir. And Mughal king Shahjahan was her son, he added.
Rajawat said such distortion of historical facts had hurt the feelings of the Rajput community. He urged the courts to restrain Gowariker from showing Jodhabai as the daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amber.
He said the name of Raja Bharmal's daughter was Harkabai alias Heera Kunwar.
"You cannot make your own history and Ashutosh Gowariker is making his own history. He is projecting Jodhabai, who is Akbar's daughter-in-law, as his beloved and making a love story out of that. He is totally distorting historical facts," Rajawat told us.
He said that the community would boycott the film.
"We are also approaching the high court against this," informed Rajawat.
The president of the Rajput Karni Sena, Lokendra Singh Kalvi, is also up in arms against the director. He said the Sena had apprehended the distortion of Rajasthan's historical facts in 'Jodhaa Akbar', which is based on the Jodhpur royal family.
"The Karni Sena would watch the movie when released and, if required, it would not allow the screening in the state," said Kalvi.
Mahaveer Singh Sarwadi, a leader of the Shatriya Yuvak Singh, said: "We would oppose the release of the film if it shows the community in bad taste."
A number of scenes for the film, which features Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles, were shot in and around Jaipur. Gowariker has consulted several eminent Mughal historians for his movie.

that's absolutely wrong .. Jodha Bai was married to Akbar .. their son Salim was married to Noor Jahan ... Because Jodha Bai was a hindu that is why Akbar tried introducing a new religion called "Deen e Illahi"

Did a Jodha Bai ever exist, ask historians

NEW DELHI: Poetic or creative license is all well, but can you create your own history or push cinematic liberty to the extreme where you end up peddling romanticised folklore as a slice of history? What do you do when there are doubts over the very existence of the character that you hope to recreate on celluloid?

These are some of the questions that film-maker Ashutosh Gowariker will have to answer when he sets out to shoot his magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai.

Who was Jodha Bai? Indeed, if she existed at all, it was as Akbar's daughter-in-law (she was married to Jahangir) and not his wife! But, if you go by folktales and K Asif's classic Mughal-e-Azam, she was Amber ruler Raja Bharmal's daughter and Akbar's wife.

Here is what some of the country's top historians have to say: Asserts renowned historian and former chairman of Indian Council of Historical Research, Prof Irfan Habib, There was not any historical character called Jodha Bai.

It's true that Akbar married Amber ruler Raja Bharmal's eldest daughter but her name is not mentioned anywhere. And she was certainly not Jahangir's mother. Even Jahangir in his memoirs (Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri) does not mention anything about his mother's side.

Former president of Indian History Congress and chairman of history department, Aligarh University, Prof Iqtedar Alam Khan corroborates Habib's version: It is only a Punjab historian Sujan Rai Bhandari, who in his book Khulasat-ut-Tawarikh mentions for the first time that the Amber princess whom Akbar married was Jahangir's mother.

But even Rai does not refer to her as Jodha Bai. However, there is another twist in the tale.

Medieval India, an NCERT history text book for Class XI by Satish Chandra, clearly states on page 165: To strengthen his position, Udai Singh married his daughter, Jagat Gosain or Jodha Bai as she came to be called, to Akbar's eldest son Salim (Jahangir).

N R Farooqi, HoD of Allahabad University History department, confirms this when he says, Jodha was not Akbar's wife but Jahangir's and she was Shahjahan's mother. Bagh-e-Jahan Ara, an 80-acre garden in Agra, used to house her mausoleum till it was sold for Rs 5,000 by the British and subsequently razed to the ground.

Her real name was Hira Kunwari and she was later given the name Jodha (but after she died), and she is the daughter of Raja Bharmal.

Akbar married quite a few Hindu princesses so it is possible that he may have been married to Motaraja Udai Singh of Marwar's daughter.......but Hira Kunwari aka Jodha (in the 20th cent) was his favourite wife and the most well known.
