Shahrukh Khan or Akshay Kumar: Who should be our 'Star Of The Year' for 2007?
With the year coming to a close, it's about that time to start looking back at 2007 and seeing which actors and films will place in our annual 'AllBollywood.com Awards'. The main title, that of 'Star Of The Year' has been an easy choice in past years (Hrithik Roshan in 2006 with Aamir Khan as first runner up and Kajol as second, Amitabh Bachchan in 2005 with Rani Mukerjee as first runner up and Abhishek Bachchan as second), this year is a much tougher decision.
When the year began, it seemed like Abhishek Bachchan would be the runaway winner this year. Guru had released and was a big hit, and the film won universal praise (it still is the highest rated big budget film of 2007 with a 72%). That, coupled with the fact that Shahrukh Khan's next release Chak De India was not generating much buzz with it's promos while the soundrack for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was rocking, seemed to have the title in the bank for the Junior B.
But things quickly changed. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom flooped at the box office while Chak De India went on to be a huge hit. Abhishek's extended appearance in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag also failed to impress while Shahrukh's Om Shanti Om (65%) surpassed the collections of Chak De India to be the biggest grosser of 2007!
With his only two releases of 2007 being the two biggest grossers of the year as well, as well as both being well received critically, one would assume that Shahrukh Khan would be the runaway choice for 'Star Of The Year'. However, that is not necessarily the case. Akshay Kumar has quietly become the most reliable star in terms of box office and cemented his position this year.
While Om Shanti Om was expected to be a huge hit from the start and had many things working in its favor, Chak De India's opening was disappointing and picked up only by word of mouth over its opening weekend. The pre-release booking for the film was the worst for a Yash Raj production since Neal N Nikki (35%) in 2005. Not to mention, both Om Shanti Om and Chak De India's were good films as they both featured in our Top Films of 2007.
Meanwhile Akshay Kumar has done what no actor since Amitabh Bachchan has done since the 70's and 80's, and that is make a series of average to above average films and make them hits! Despite not working with the biggest production houses and directors, Akshay keeps churning out hit after hit! As a matter of fact, Akshay Kumar's best reviewed film this year, Heyy Babyy, has the same rating of Shahrukh Khan's worst reviewed in the past 3 years, Don - The Chase Begins Again (also at a 58%).
All of Akshay's films this year have scored in the 50's range (which is Average to Above Average) with Heyy Babyy faring the best with critics at a 58% (Above Average), with Namastey London next at a 56% (also Above Average) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa in third with a 52%. Despite the average reviews from the critics, all three films were hits, with Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa being super hits!
All eyes are now on Akshay's next, Welcome. The film also stars Feroz Khan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Katrina Kaif, however Akshay is the main draw of the film. The music has been faring poorly at a 44% (for reviews of the soundtrack, click here), however Akshay has shown this year that it shouldn't affect it's opening. If Welcome is a hit, that definitely would make this year's 'Star Of The Year' a very tough decision.
If Welcome is a hit, who do you feel should be 2007's 'Star Of The Year'? You can let your voice be heard by voting in our Opinion Poll on the left side of the screen. Welcome releases on December 21, 2007.
