Aabeer Gulaal reviews and box office
Ok I am going to post my review for Saawariya, and from that you can see why ppl liked Saawariya
Here's My Reivew
Ok so finally today I got to watch Saawariya, and now will give my review, but I will remind the members that whatever I say about the movie is solely my opinion.
Also before I give the review, I wanted to say how many ppl came to see Saawariya. There were about 30-35 ppl, and not a single person got up in the middle of the movie to leave. So noone left the movie, because it was rubbish. Now I also want to say that the theatre that i went to is small, and plys just because it has 30-35 ppl doesnt mean that the movie was bad, because when I went to see Partner there were only 7 ppl there.
Saawariya Review
Story- As most of you know by now, Saawariya is inspired by the novel, White Nights, which is a story that takes place in a time span of 4 nights. Saawariya unfolds the story of two strangers, who meet, and over the next 4 nights their relationship graudually grows. But are they destined to be togather?
For that you will have to watch the movie. (Sorry I making this part short, because if I continue, I might end up including some spoilers.)
Sets- After seeing the sets on the big screen it just left me speechless. Words are not enough to discribe how beautiful and elegant the sets look in Saawariya. They are breath-taking, spellbounding and leave you in awe. Omung Kumar definitly deserves termendous praise for creating such ravishing sets.
Dialogues- I really loved the dialogues for the movie. They were very poetic and meaningful. And because most of the dialogues ended up rhyming, it kept the interest alive among the audience in hearing them. And I just loved the very first poetic dialouge that Ranbir says.
Background Music/Songs/Chreography- Monty debuted as a music director with Saawariya, and I must say that he has done a fabolous job with the songs and the background score for the movie. Everytime that the word "Saawariya" played in the background it sounded peaceful, funy, and just made you love it. A pleasure to the ears. And a variety of instruments were used for the background score of the film.
As for the songs, each one was perfectly places and the chreography was GREAT! My top 3 songs were all a pleasure to watch and hear on the big screen. And after watching the movie I have started liking Masha Allah, Pari and Chabeela. Jaan-E-Jaan and Thode Badhmash were just ok ok type of songs.
Performances
Zohra Sehgal- She plays the character of Lillian aka Lallipop. Zohra plays a strick landlord, who at the same time is really sweet and rocking old lady, who bye age might be old, but at heart is still very young and romantic. After seeing Ranbir, she pours all her motherly love on him and they just share a very nice bond onscreen. And I have to got to mention on thing, when Zohra says "bytch"....that was just classical, and it ended up giving me a good laugh.
Rani- After giving horrible performances in KANK and LCMD, the queen of bollywood strikes a chord with her performance in Saawariya as Ghulab. Ghulab is a very essential character in the story, who starts and ends the story of the movie, and really I totally loved Rani in this role. Her costume and hairstyle was just AWESOME, and on top of it her fab acting was like icing on the cake. In other words, if I had to comment on Ghulab in the film, then in her words I would say- I likes!
Salman Khan- Salman plays a role of a clergy and his character's name is Imaan Khan. In the first half there are some scenes between Imaan-Sakina, which were pretty average, but I must say there was one scene which I totally fell in love with. Without giving much info on the scene...I will say that the "almost kiss" between them, was shot so well and nicely, that it looked very beautiful.
I wish there was more of Salman in the film, because he definitly left me there wanting more of him.
Sonam Kapoor- Before commenting on her character/acting, I have to say that Sonam is an extremely gorgeous girl, and she looked very beautiful in the film.
Sonam plays the character of Sakina, the girl who waits every night, with tears in her eyes, eagerly looking to see when her lover will return. I was sort of disappointed with Sonam's acting. I mean when she laughed it was reall annoying, because it sounded really fake. And at time I couldnt every differentiate whether she was crying or laughing. Her expressions were pretty good and up to the mark, and at times she did deliver the dialogues pretty well. But overall she was strictly just average.
Ranbir Kapoor- The show stealer of the movie and a star in the making!
Ever since Ranbir Kapoor was first shown in promos, I never considered him good looking, hot, cute or any of that, but after watching the film, I must say the guy definitly is a charmer. A total ladies' man and a complete romantic which any girl would want to date. And these are the qualities which Ranbir perfectly brings into his character of Ranbir Raj Kapoor, and you just cant help but fall in love with him.
Expectations were very low from Ranbir, since from the promos he didnt seem as if he would end up giving a good perfromance, but I am glad he proved everyone wrong. Saawariya, being his first movie, he has done full justice to it, given an outstanding performance and he marked a great debut for himself!
He delivers his dialogues with ease, yet with confidence. The timing of some of the jokes were pretty good. When he laughed, it brought a smile on your face. When he cried, the pain was evident in his eyes. When he was in love, all one can say is "aww".
Besides his acting, dialogue delivery and expression, I gotta admit, Ranbir is one hell-of-a great dancer!
When Kaho Na Pyar Hai had released, I was ten at the time, and had very little knowledge about films. But at that time what made me fall in love with Hrithik was his dance to Ek Pal Ka Jeena song. Damn i fell head over heels for the guy, because he danced so greatly yet made it seem so effortless.
And I want to say the same for Ranbir. I was already in love with the Saawariya title track, ever since the song promo had released, but after seeing Ranbir dance to it, I fell in love with it all over again. And I really loved and enjoyed watching how the chreographer mixed today's modern dance with the dance from the Raj Kapoor era.
Director
Shakesphere once said "whats in a name?" But for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, his name says it all. The guy has got the vision to capture beauty and present it in such a way in his films that audience can't help but praise him for his brilliance. I mean really how many directors can make "dusting rugs" look visually beautiful. Every SLB movie has been beautiful, last time he gave us a movie that only showed one color, BLACK, and now with Saawariya he has officially made BLUE the new color for love. Not only does SLB get a 10/10 for vision, but his ear for music is also worthy of praise. I don't think there has been a single SLB movie, with whose music I was ever disappointed with. From Khamoshi all the way to Saawariya, one can always expect great quality music from an SLB movie. As for his direction I have always said that SLB is one of the finest directors in India, and is a whole class apart from the other directors. I will also like to add that SLB should be applauded for his committment towards the newcomers and giving them 2 yrs of his time, in grooming them and transforming them into actors.
So, why doesn't Saawariya work?
Ok, so now many of you might be thinking that I have praised Saawariya immensely, and have hardly, if any, given any negative comments. Well that is because now I am going to express my point of view to why I think why Saawariya might not work.
To begin with I think the critics bashed Saawariya mainly due to its story, but ming you I am not going to say that the story is utterly rubbish or horrible. The problem with the story is that its too simple, actually it's SLB's most simplest story till date; and because the story is soo simple it's below the high expectations of what the audience had probably expected of SLB, and the simplicity and innocence of the story does sort of get lost admist the extravagant sets and meledious music.
*Before I continue any further, I want to first address some of the questions that were pointed out by Taran/Memebers/Reviewers:
1.) What era does the story take place?
Not that it matters, but since it was asked, it takes place in the 18th cent.
2.) What is the place's name, where the movie is shot?
Again a pretty silly questions, and those who asked it (ahem Taran), probably didnt do enough research. But to clarify, Saawariya has been shot using only sets, as SLB wanted to create an enternal love story in faiy tale style.
3.) There are too many songs in the film!
True! But if you had only used a little bit of common sense, it wouldn't really havent taken a genius to figure out that Saawariya is a "MUSICAL" love story, therefore 8 songs being in the film is quiet reasonable. (DUH!)
4.) Why did Rani not let Ranbir enter her house?
Now this question was asked by the very popular critic, Taran, and I hate to say this, but I really have the feeling that he went to the screeing of Saawariya, already hating and therefore didnt even make the slightest effort in trying to watch the movie. Because Rani LOUDLY states in the film to why she didnt let Ranbir in her house.
5.) Salman's character is too confusing!
Yes, his character is confusing, and that is due to all the editing that has been done to his role. I am sure if his role was kept for the full 45 mins as he was promised then we would have gotten a much better idea of Salman's character and more chemistry between Sonam and Salman.
Now continuing on what I was saying earlier, I think the problem isnt really with the movie itself. The movie has a pretty good storline, but because the story is told mostly through the songs rather than dialogues, that is what ended up causing the confusion and problem. Our Indian audience is soo used to the story being told through dramatic and inetense dialogues, and they could not make themselves listen to the story being told through the songs. A majority of people saw/noticed that there are many songs int he film, but they failed to notice that each song had music which expressed the character's feeling and lyrics which explained the situation and brought the story forward.
So from my point of view there really isnt anything wrong with the storyline, except that Salman's character was half-baked. SLB tried the technique of creating a musical love story, which would be the first of its kind in bollywood, and he did a pretty good job with it, but a majority of people failed to understand the real purpose of the movie and the significances of the songs. Personally looking at Saawariya from a musical love story perspective, then SLB has done a pretty fine job with it, and atleast the guy has the guts to try something new in bollywod.
So overall I liked Saawariya, and if you go watch Saawariya, don't watch it thinking it will be a love story. NO!....Because Saawariya is a musical love story.
Rating 4/5
