Ranbir Raj Kapoor made his debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, a film reportedly based on Dostoevsky's short story White Nights. In 1960, Raj Kapoor played the lead opposite Nutan in Manmohan Desai's Challia, inspired by the same story by Dostoevsky.

I have only read Saawariya's review and from whatever I know it is not like Chhalia. I mean in Chhalia, the basic plot is similar like Raj Kapoor helps Nutan and her child and then she goes back with her husband. But that is the core of many Hindi films. We can say even HDDCS had similar story.

But parallels can be drawn between Raj Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor for being the tragic lover.

As far as I know characters are not similar. I watched it some years back. This is the plot:

There is Nutan and Rehman as married couple. She plays a Pakistani. Rehman is in India and if I am not mistaken because of partition and such problems. Then I think she comes to India in search of her husband with their kid. Pran is the villain who creates suspicions in Rehman's mind and he refuses to accept her. Then Raj Kapoor who is the 'chhalia' helps Nutan to overcome her grief but in the end her husband returns and she goes back with him.

So that's why I drew parallels to the tragic lovers.

Many of Raj Kapoor's B/W are simple and prudent.

I have not watched Chhalia, but after reading this - feel like watching it soon... The songs of Chhalia are gr8 anyways....

Based on what I read, I think - though the 2 storylines are different, but the original inspiration of both the movies is indeed 'White nights'.. Chhalia seems to have developed a different story keeping the initial idea from the short-story... Nutan is a lovely actress... am sure, she was great in Chhalia too
