How is Trishala?

By: Nishant A Bhuse
August 3, 2007

Daddy's darling: Trishala and Sanjay

Sanjay Dutt, who was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment for illegal possession of weapons on Tuesday (July 31), is extremely tense about his 18-year-old daughter Trishala.

According to a well-placed source in the Dutt family, Trishala was Sanju's top priority in a discussion with sisters Priya and Namrata, who visited him at Arthur Road jail on August 1.

Days before his shocking verdict in the 1993 bomb blasts case was announced, Sanju was extremely tense about Trishala. Though Trishala has been away from her father (she lives in New York), Sanju had been in constant touch with her, says a close family source.

Worried father

Speaking to the source, Dutt had said, "Trishala is too young to take decisions in life. Though I am not physically present with her, she has always consults with me over the telephone. We have conversations that last for hours together. I don't know what will happen now."

A source close to the Dutts adds, "It was an emotional scene in the visiting room of Arthur Road jail. Sanju is spending sleepless nights there. He has grown a stubble and his eyes looked red and swollen as he had spent the entire night in tears."

The first thing he asked when he met his sisters was how Trishala was responding to the judgement. "He asked his sisters to take care of her as she is very emotional and sensitive. He also exchanged some words with his girlfriend Manayata, who has stood rock solid by him and his family," says another source at Arthur Road jail.

Bappa's shattered dream

By: Tushar Joshi
August 3, 2007

Bappa Lahiri is a huge fan of Sanjay Dutt, not just for his acting skills but also for his singing abilities. Bappi da's son claims that Sanju has an amazing voice and has sung some great melodies in Sanjay Gupta's Alibaug. Shell-shocked with the verdict on Dutt, Bappa (who recently returned from London) says he will wait for Sanju to come out before cutting an album with him.

"Sanju has sung and rapped in films before, but not many know he can sing really well. He can hit the right notes and sounds like a professional singer. I have recorded three songs with him for Alibaug and he's fabulous in all of them."

Bright presence

One of the songs, titled Raat khamosh hai, is filmed on Dutt. "We were on the verge of shooting the rest of the songs when his sentencing was announced. Sanju has sung a song with my dad (Bappi) and another one with Roopkumar Rathod."

Bappa feels going back to the studio will be a painful experience. He says, "It's difficult going back. The atmosphere lightened up the moment Sanju stepped into the studio. Now, everyone is morose and depressed. I hope his sentence is reduced and he comes out soon. He's a strong guy. I know he'll make it."

All work: Riteish Deshmukh, Sanjay and Arshad Warsi in Dhamaal

Producers Ashok Thakeria and Indra Kumar (who has also directed Dhamaal) can't forget Sanjay Dutt's commitment to their film. The actor ensured that he completed Dhamaal so that they wouldn't suffer losses. Not just that, when they sent a CD of the film's promos to the actor, he said he loved the film before leaving for court on Tuesday (July 31).

Just do it

Says Thakeria, "Indu and I can never forget Sanju's gesture. When we narrated the script he instantly agreed to do it, saying it was pure dhamaal."

On the last day of shooting at Film City, where a huge set had been erected, Sanju shot till 3 am without complaining. "People close to him were shocked. They told us Baba has never shot for one and a half days at a stretch. We were touched. It was only because of Sanju's commitment that our film is complete today."

That wasn't all. Sanjay even attended a photo shoot for the publicity stills and promos at Mehboob Studio while his case was on. "In fact, he came straight from court to the studio and shot woith us for an hour," says a grateful Thakeria.

The producer adds that Sanju is a very sharp actor and picks up his lines instantly. "He is not the kind to retire to his van after canning shots. He sits right next to the camera, watching every scene."

Though he is a prankster, Sanju didn't display too much of his fun side as the court case was weighing him down. "But not once did he cancel the shoot because of that," says Thakeria.

He met Dutt on July 31 when he was leaving for court. "We had sent him CDs of Dhamaal's promos last week. We had gone to see him and just before leaving for court, Sanju showed us a thumbs up sign and said, 'It's rocking! Everyone loves the promos.' That was the last we saw of him."

Ashok has only one request. "I pray that Sanju is out before Dhamaal releases on September 11, so that he can be part of the happy event."

Sanju's deed of goodness

Touched: Priyanka Ghatak

A large section of the film fraternity feels that Sanjay Dutt has been given a very harsh sentence, associate director and writer Priyanka Ghatak has a personal experience to justify why she thinks likewise.

Bleeding heart

A few days back, Priyanka was travelling in a rickshaw from Four Bungalows to Sion at 8.30 pm. When the rickshaw was about to stop at the signal adjacent to Amitabh Bachchan's Jalsa bungalow, the driver banged into a black SUV in front of it. "He was a crazy driver, always applying brakes at the last minute. I was expecting for an accident to happen."

Priyanka was thrown forward and her face hit the rickshaw meter. The rickshaw driver was about to start abusing the driver of the SUV when he suddenly saw Dutt in the driver's seat.

When some cops in the vicinity came to take stock of the situation, Sanjay simply smiled. He told the cops that nothing major had happened and turned to the rickshaw driver.

What happened next left Priyanka dazed. Sanjay took out Rs 500 from his pocket and handed it to the rickshaw driver. "Sanju told the rickshaw wallah, 'It's your fault but drive carefully from now on. Keep this money if it'll help you," Priyanka reveals.

Awestruck

Priyanka says that she will never forget that incident. "I was shocked and awestruck. He has a heart of gold. I have grown up seeing his films and had heard that his heart bleeds for every poor man, but here I was, actually seeing it with my own eyes. Later, he asked me if I was hurt. He even patted my hand."

Sallu Cancels Party!!

[3 Aug 2007>

Sallubhai, who is famous for arranging big parties, has cancelled the birthday bash of his sister Arpita at Taj Lends End in view of the six-year jail term awarded to his close friend and colleague Sanjay Dutt. The party was scheduled for today to celebrate her nineteenth birthday and invitations had already been sent to friends and colleagues. But now Salman Khan's sister is informing the invitees through SMSes about the cancellation of the party.

As Salman's sister Arpita explains, ' I am not throwing the party anymore. I was supposed to bring in my birthday at Taj Lands End, but we took a joint decision not to go ahead after Sanju bhaiya's verdict. We are very upset and disturbed, so we informed the invitees trough SMS that the party had been cancelled.'

The decision to cancel the party was taken by the Khan household jointly (by Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan) to show the solidarity with the Dutt family in this hour of crisis. Though Salman's sister is very young, yet took the cancellation of her birthday bash very sportingly and went with along the decision of the family. Her last birthday bash at Taj had been attended by around two hundred people including Shilpa and Shamita Shetty, Sanjay and Maheep Kapoor, Chunky and Bhavna Pandey Sajid Nadiadwala, Anna Singh etc and party continued till the wee hours of morning.

Sanjay Dutt's jail term has also forced the cancellation of the grand premiere of ' Gandhi My Father', which was scheduled for last night at a multiplex. Even the post-premiere party, which was to be hosted by industrialist Parmeshwar Godrej , has now been cancelled in view of the Sanju's sentence. This film is different from the Richard Attenborough's Gandhi in the sense that it focuses completely on the relationship of Gandhiji with his son Harilal, who worked for Godrej.

As Harilal worked for Godrej, there are lots of visual references to the company and for this reason Parmeshwar Godrej was holding a bash at her Juhu bungalow in respect of cast and crew of the film. The film has been produced by Anil Kapoor and directed by Firoz Abbas Khan and is said to be based on an untouched territory of Bapu's life.

Besides these cancellations, around hundred crore is riding on Sanjay Dutt's films and producers, directors and others associated with them are in trouble. Nobody knows what will happen to these films if Sanjay Dutt does not get any relief from the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Munnabhai has been shifted to Yervada jail (Gandhiji spent several years during British time in this jail) of Pune from Mumbai's Arthur jail for security reasons. Let's hope Sanju baba imparts some of his Gandhigiri to jail convicts there too.

When will Sanju's pain end?

By Subhash K Jha

Abhishek Bachchan: 'This is very upsetting"

Priyanka Chopra: "I'm shocked and upset. I wish him and his family strength and courage. I'm sure the film fraternity will stand by him in every way possible. He's a wonderful person. And since he has already served 16 months I'm confident the Supreme Court will be lenient. I wish all the best."

Bipasha Basu: "I'm shocked. I feel very sad. He has suffered enough. His suffering should've stopped by now. All his friends feel helpless. No one can do anything.

Raveena Tandon: "This is too shocking. I've known him for years. And he's the most lovable person I've met. He's a victim of circumstances and follies. The law is equal for all. And we respect the country's laws. But six years seems a bit harsh, considering the kind of person Sanju is. My family and I stand by the Dutts in their moment of crisis. And I really mean it."

Preity Zinta: "I'm deeply saddened by this verdict. In my heart I'm saying a prayer and I'm looking above for an end to Sanju's problems. Sanju made a mistake. But he is not a bad guy. In fact he's a terrific guy.

Anil Kapoor: "I'm sad and shocked"

Mahesh Bhatt: "I get the feeling of dj vu. It's like a recurring nightmare which just won't go away."

Sohail Khan: "I'm speechless. This is just not expected."

Kangana Ranaut: "It's heartbreaking. Sanjay Dutt is no threat to society. So I wonder why he needs to be kept behind bars! When he has long ago realized his mistake why such harsh punishment? Why six years? It's so painful."

Manoj Bajpai: "I'm nobody to question the vedict. And I'm too saddened by it to even talk about it. I hope he gets bail at the earliest. My entire family is shocked. We're all praying for him. I admire the man a lot. May God bless him."

Urmila Matondkar: "This is extremely sad and deeply saddening."

Madhur Bhandarkar: "I can't get over the enormity of the news! The whole film fraternity is in a state of shock. My heartfelt sympathies and support for the Dutt family.

Suneel Darshan: "While I have absolute faith and respect in the court's decision. I feel terribly sorry for Sanjay's plight. As a member of the film fraternity I'd like to express solidarity with his family through these testing times. In the meanwhile for the industry his absence will cause a tremendous loss as he had emerged as one of our most versatile actors. I feel a great concern for the films that would get stranded.

Upen Patel: "I feel sad. But he has been through so much. I'm sure he'll come out of this stronger. He's such a wonderful humanbeing. I was lucky to have him take me under his wings and make me his gym partner."

Vikram Bhatt: "Sanjay's sentence is very depressing. I can't comment on the intricacies of the law. But as a humanbeing I feel he has suffered enough. He's not a criminal. Just a man who made a silly mistake in troubled times when it was hard to keep one's value judgement clear."

Vipul Shah: "Everyone knows he did it purely to protect his family. So to me Sanjay Dutt is a good man. At the same time according to the law his conduct was incorrect. So this was I guess, inevitable. Sanjay Dutt exemplifies that plight that awaits 'powerful' people who get into trouble.

I feel the sentence is a little harsh. The court didn't consider all those days when he kept missing his shooting to go to courts and police stations. If the court had considered that perhaps the verdict would've seemed less harsh."

David Dhawan: "Me and my wife Laali were with Sanju on his birthday on Sunday (July 29). We had so much fun. We were so sure that he'd come out of this. Little did we know what awaited Sanju two days later…Life's not fair, yaar! Sanju is God's child. Always ready with a smile to help everyone, me included.

Do you know he got me my first break as director. I was editing his films like Naam and Jaan Ki Baazi when he prodded me and got my first directorial assignment. Why just me, he even got my assistant Ajay a break as director.

Sanju has given so much to so many people, not half of it is known. For now the industry has come to a standstill. No one wants to celebrate. No parties, no premieres. I can't enjoy the success of Partner.

Do you know Sanju called and told me people were congratulating him for the success of my Partner. That's how magnanimous he is. He loves my sons, got them gifts from abroad. It's really sad, because he lost his mother, wife, father….that man has gone through so much pain. When will it end?

Hema Malini: "I feel terrible for him. We all go through problems. And I can feel the trauma his family is going through. But when the legal verdict is passed there's nothing we can do or say."

Arshad Warsi: "I'm sorry I can't respond to you. If I did it'd look like I'm trying to get publicity out of a friend's misery."

Jail ki Tension Mat Le, Mamu!

It was a long night for Sanjay Dutt but finally there was some smile on imprisoned Bollywood star's face today when he saw his sister Congress MP Priya Dutt, who visited him at the Arthur Road Jail.

Sources said Sanjay's face lit up when he met Priya.

Meanwhile, an inmate who was released this evening, informed that Sanjay did not eat anything during the first night in jail.

''He was offered an apple by an inmate, which he reluctantly accepted but hardly ate. Even today, when he was given lunch, he passed it on to his co-convict Yusuf Nalwalla, who has been awarded five years sentence in the same case,'' the inmate said.

This was, however, denied by jail authorities who said the actor had his lunch with Praveen Mahajan, charged with allegedly murdering his brother and senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan last year.

Meanwhile, a restless Sanju who can't stay without chewing gutkha for more than a few hours, became restless without it, which even got his blood pressure low.

But Priya Dutt came to his recue and arrived at the jail, armed with a dozen packets of his favourite gutkha. Of course, her brother was overjoyed. A doctor at the jail said Dutt's blood pressure problems were cured after he chewed on the gutkha.

The inmate said Sanjay was quite gloomy and spent the entire night crying in his cell and jailmates mocking him by mouthing his dialogues didn't help either.

"Mamu, smile kar… tension mat le" mocked the three-dozen prisoners in his barrack, asking him to stop worrying and sobbing.

If he would even look at them, they would ask him, 'Wahaan kyon baitha hai yaar, apne saath aa naa.'" However, there are bars between Dutt's cell and the Buddha-barrack hall, hence nobody could touch Dutt, only tease him from a distance.

Sanjay has been lodged in a 90-sq feet room in the ''buddha barrack'' (cell for aged inmates) of the prison.

He will be shifted to Pune's Yerawada jail on Friday, according to his lawyer Satish Maneshide.

Sanjay Dutt shifted to Yeravada Central Jail in Pune

By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 3, 2007 - 11:45 IST

Sanjay Dutt has been shifted to Yeravada Central Jail in Pune on Thursday night. Dutt was sentenced for 6 years rigorous imprisonment. Yerwada Jail is on the outskirts of the city, where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned during freedom struggle days.

Dutt was taken to the Arthur Road Jail immediately after the verdict two days back, but authorities submitted a report that cited several reasons why he could not be kept at Arthur Road Jail. He was shifted to the Yeravada Jail in Pune from Mumbai under tight security after he withdrew his application to be kept in a prison in the state capital.

According to the jail official, Dutt will be in a separate high-security egg-shaped cell. He went through a medical check-up soon after his arrival. Home food will not be provided to him and he has to wear prisoner's clothes.

Chal mere bhai: Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan

Salman Khan is extremely disturbed about good friend Sanjay Dutt's conviction to six years rigorous imprisonment in jail. It's no secret that the Khans and the Dutts are close, and Salman treats Sanju like an older brother. Khan, who is shooting for a film in Bangkok, has been in constant touch with Dutt's family and close friends to know about his state.

A source close to Dutt says, "On the day of Sanju's sentencing (July 31), Salman called his Man Friday Nadeem Khan at least 16 times in 30 minutes. He wanted up-to-the-minute updates on Sanju's sentencing."

Nadeem was present at the ITC Maratha's caf with Dutt's family, where they were awaiting Sanju's sentencing. A source close to Salman says, "Salman bhai says his family's heart goes out to Sanju. No matter what happens, they will stand by him."

It is learnt that Salman has warned close friends and family not to give irrelevant details or quotes regarding Sanju in the media. "Salman is emotional about Sanju and doesn't want anything to hamper his legal proceedings," adds the source.

Arbaaz Khan, who worked with Dutt in Shootout At Lokhandwala, confirms that Salman is disturbed about Dutt's conviction. "Sanju is like family. For Salmanbhai, he's like a brother." So much so, that the Khans cancelled sister Arpita's 19th birthday celebrations for August 3, after Sanju's sentencing was announced.

A friend indeed!

Producer Bunty Walia, who is Dutt's close friend, waited for the actor outside Arthur Road prison on August 2. When Sanju come out of the prison to be shifted to Yerwada jail in Pune, Bunty climbed onto the roof of his Toyota car and shouted, "Baba, don't worry. I am with you.

Love you!" Says Bunty, "I had decided that until I don't see Sanju, I would not leave the spot." Bunty then followed the police van to Pune. Sources say it was Bunty and Ismail, another close friend, who followed Sanjay along with his girlfriend Manayata.
