Sanju baba's out, B-Town's thrilled

The industry is euphoric over Dutt's temporary relief from the SC

On July 31, Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.

The actor was then lodged at Pune's Yerwada Jail, amidst unprecedented protest from friends and fans alike. After three weeks of doing time, there seems some ray of hope for the fallen actor.

He's now got interim bail from the Supreme Court and B-Town is overjoyed at the prospect of seeing him as a free man again.

Sunil Shetty (Actor)

I was in shock when I heard the news. I couldn't believe it! I'm very happy and have always maintained that God has mysterious ways of doing things.

Sanjay Gupta
(Producer)

Justice prevails and our faith in the judiciary stands vindicated. God bless Sanjay Dutt.

Ekta Kapoor
(Producer)

I feel he was being used to make an example. I think justice has been done and a celebrity is not being made a scapegoat anymore.

I hope he gets out once and for all. People get vicarious pleasure from seeing a successful person suffer, and those who condemned him in the name of the law belong to that
category.

Ashok Thakeria
(Producer)

Dhamaal is releasing on September 7 and I am very happy for Sanju. He's not just a star in my film but also a good friend.

I plan to go and meet him when he comes out. We would love to have a premiere for the film but it depends on Sanju and what his state of mind is.

Rohit Roy
(Actor)

I am overjoyed. His interim relief has given us all great relief. The very thought of Sanju sir spending any more time in the slammer was a source of discomfort for all of us. Nightmarish actually. So I am happy that he's going to be home shortly.

Bunty Walia
(Producer)

I'm delighted. I'm dying to see him again. Our prayers have been answered. I am mostly going to go and fetch him back.

Karan Johar
(Filmmaker)

I am thrilled for Sanju and his family. He has been in my thoughts and I feel a sense of relief. I can't begin to imagine what he must be feeling today. Sanju is very special to my family. We love him dearly and wish him the best from the bottom of our hearts.

Subhash Ghai
(Producer)

It's the result of millions of prayers that he has got justice. My family and I are extremely happy that Sanju can now breathe easy. He has been punished enough for his mistake, so now we should let him make his late father, family and nation proud.

Sanjay Dutt likely to be released today
By Nithin Belle (Our correspondent)

22 August 2007
MUMBAI — Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt may be released today. The documents relating to the interim bail granted by the Supreme Court in Delhi had not reached the special Tada court in Mumbai last evening.

Despite India having entered the Internet era — with most government departments and public and private sector companies being linked to the net — judicial papers move by snail mail; consequently, jail authorities cannot release prisoners until they get physical delivery of the bail or discharge orders.

Sanjay was sentenced to six years jail by the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (Tada) court in Mumbai late last month, and has been in Pune's Yerwada jail for the last three weeks.

Scores of curious onlookers and fans waited outside the jail for the actor's release yesterday. Yerawada jail authorities asserted that he could be released only if they received the interim bail order of the Supreme Court by 5pm.

The apex court granted Sanjay and five others interim bail as documents giving the full sentence had not been given to them. Sanjay was taken into custody immediately after the special court judge pronounced his verdict, but the documents relating to the sentence will take a few more days to be ready.

IANS adds: Meanwhile, in Mumbai Sanjay's lawyer Farhana Shah is waiting too. "I still haven't received the papers. It's impossible that he will be released today."

Inside the jail, Sanjay is busy with the chores of carpentry and caning (of chairs) that he has chosen as part of the six years "rigorous imprisonment" he was handed by a court in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings.

According to Asim Sarode, lawyer and social activists who works at Yerawada Jail, Sanjay Dutt has worked for 16 days and will receive Rs.204 as his allowance.

"He has picked up carpentry very fast," Sarode said.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt freed from jail
(Reuters)

23 August 2007

MUMBAI - Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, jailed for six years for receiving guns from gangsters involved in the country's worst bombings, was released from prison in western India early on Thursday.

Dutt, sporting a beard and a shaved head, walked free following 24 days in jail and after being granted bail by the Supreme Court on Monday while his lawyers challenge the conviction.

"I knew he would walk out free. I'm so happy," Trishala Dutt, the actor's daughter and a US resident, told local television by telephone. "I can't believe it's happening."

The macho superstar began serving his six-year sentence on July 31 -- less the 16 months he served while awaiting trial over the bomb attacks that killed 257 people in India's commercial capital of Mumbai in 1993.

Dutt, 48, stepped out of the jail in Pune city and shook the hands of police officers before leaving for home.

Dressed in a white, striped shirt, he was received by a few friends and lawyers, flown to Mumbai in a private jet and then driven to his house in a black limousine.

The actor, who earned fame playing anti-hero and gangster roles, was welcomed by family and friends, some of whom had arrived from overseas. A coconut was broken at the doorstep as an auspicious ritual.

His sister Priya, a lawmaker in India's lower house of parliament, hugged him. Dozens of fans gathered outside his home.

But the respite for Dutt could be temporary.

His lawyers had petitioned the country's top court against his conviction and sought bail until that appeal was ruled on.

They said they could not argue the case as they were yet to get a copy of the judgment of the Mumbai court that sentenced Dutt. The court agreed to release the actor until the lawyers get a copy of the verdict.

Court officials said Dutt could be served a copy in a month's time, after which he might have to go back to jail.
