Pooch-o mat!

The unit of Dulha Mil Gaya had problems getting a pooch across to Trinidad, tried to spray-paint another dog for continuity

Sushmita Sen
Sushmita Sen plays a Trinidad-based supermodel Shimmer in Viveck Vaswani's forthcoming film, Dulha Mil Gaya. The plot-line has Shimmer consulting her pooch, Bozo, in matters of heart. The story goes that getting a well-behaved dog for the adorable pet's role has been a tough task for the producers.

Initially, crew members got their hands on a meek Chihuahua. However, Sush complained that the dog is too frail to bear the strong arc lights and other stressful conditions on a film set. Producer Viveck Vaswani even volunteered to pamper the pooch, but an ardent animal lover Sush decided otherwise. Thereafter, the producer brought Tuffy Tuff, a lovely silver-grey French poodle to the sets. Sush, who has four dogs, shot considerable portions of the film with the dog in a city studio. Later when the cast and the crew members flew down to Trinidad and Tobago for a month-long schedule they couldn't carry their favourite Tuffy aka Bozo along.

The cargo company refused to ship the dog citing reasons that the dog didn't have a fitness certificate from a registered veterinarian. Later, when the dog was transported to London officials at the Heathrow Airport refused to send it to Trinidad stating that "it has a murmur in the heart". This delayed the schedule and the crew members launched another dog-hunt in Trinidad. Enthusiastic dog owners paraded their French poodles before the producers, but they could not spot a silver-grey French poodle. So they decided to spray-paint a white poodle instead, and resume shooting.

Adds Anthony Maharaj, executive producer: "Days were just flying and we had to shoot crucial scenes with the dog. But we failed to get a silver-grey poodle in Trinidad. It was then we decided to spray some silver-grey body paint on a white dog."

Eventually, Tuffy arrived on the sets, the very next day, happy to get reunited with her filmy family. "She is a very healthy and cheerful dog. After the shoot got over, I had Tuffy at my place for about 10 days and we are good friends today."
