Theatre personality Feroz Khan, who makes his directorial debut with Gandhi My Father, has added Abbas to his name to avoid confusion

WHAT IS YOUR NAAM? Feroz Abbas Khan (left) and Feroz Khan
Theatre writer-director-producer Feroz Khan, who makes his directorial debut with the Anil Kapoor production Gandhi My Father, has now decided to call himself Feroz Abbas Khan.

The new addition to his name is to avoid any confusion with veteran actor-producer Feroz Khan.

Not me!

"For many years, I have been confused with Feroz Khan, the actor. I have received calls meant from him at all times from all over the world. I have to explain to one and all that I am not the Feroz they are looking for!" he says.

However, the reason that prompted him to add his middle name is the fact that people have started wondering why Feroz Khan (who is known for his flamboyance and commercial films) is making a film like Gandhi My Father!

The film takes on the stormy relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal and releases on August 3. It stars Darshan Jariwala as Gandhi and Akshaye Khanna as Harilal. "This was when I thought it was about time I did something with my name.

As our spellings are also the same, I decided to add my middle name, Abbas," he says.So has this cleared the name confusion? "I hope so," he says. "I have just made the name change so I hope the jumble gets cleared once and for all."

Mistaken identity

Khan, who is the name behind well-known Hindi plays like Saalgirah (with Anupam and Kirron Kher), Tumhari Amrita (with Shabana Azmi and Farooque Shaikh) and Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai (with Anupam Kher), feels that at least the theatre folk won't jumble up his identity.

"But now that I have taken a step in the celluloid world, I want people to get the person behind the name right too!"

Khan recalls that he has even received wedding proposals for Fardeen Khan, when he was still single. "They would assume that I was his father, and call me up and start talking about a rishta for Fardeen.

Then, when Fardeen was booked for possessing cocaine, I would get strange calls and had a tough time telling them they were speaking to the wrong person. So many media guys also mix up my name," he bemoans.

Has he ever met his namesake? "Yes, a while back at an event. It was around midnight and I spoke to him about this, but I really don't know if he fathomed my predicament!"

So to record straight Firoz Abbas Khan is a theatre personality who is now directing Gandhi My Friend. And he is not B-Town's Feroz Khan. Mind it!
