Balan Blunders !
By: Abid

Vidya Balan has to pull up her socks . After a promising start in 'Parineeta ' , the actress followed it up with 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' . So far so good ! But she seems to have got it all wrong after that . In Mani Ratnam's 'Guru' , which was her third release , Vidya played a handicapped girl . Not only was her role inconsequential to the plot but even her costumes and look in the film were bad . Obviously Vidya may have felt tempted to work in 'Guru' because it was directed by Mani Ratnam , but there isn't much sense in displeasing one's fans in the process .

Again , although 'Salaam-E-Ishq' saw the talented actress perform ably , her character was that of a person who loses her memory . The actress may have taken the role as a challange but the film itself was such a box-office bomb that the challenge failed to get noticed by the public .

The recent 'Eklavya' has Vidya Balan in the female lead . However , she has just a handful of scenes , hardly any in which she would stand out . Obviously , Vidya couldn't have backed out of 'Eklavya' as it has been produced by the banner which launched her , but again , the film will not add any feathers to her cap . Rather , it would be a film her fans would like to forget .

Vidya needs to do some serious rethinking if she doesn't want to be relegated to where any heroine would hate to be .

I agree to some extent. I was surprised she accepted such a small role in Guru. But Vidya had said in some recent interview that the role was meant to be longer but some of scenes were edited out. I wouldn't say it was an unimportant role. Her character was one that brought together (not really united) the opposing characters, Guru and Shyam. If there was anything common btw Guru and Shyam, it was their love and care for Meenu. I don't know about the costumes. The film was not really about the costumes so who cares? Its not like she looked terrible!

As for SEL, its not a hit but was a big budget movie and Vidya was one of the few actors/actresses who received good reviews. I wouldn't say it was a waste and one can't expect every film to be a hit!

It seems like Vidya is one actress who doesn't mind the small length of her roles, as long as they are important. But yes, Vidya is such a talented actress and deserves role that can do justice to that talent. I'm sure her forthcoming films will feature her in more important roles. She's still relatively new so no need to rush things, I guess.

I hope Madhavan and Vidya do more films together in the future. They made a nice couple in Guru and the scene where Shyam proposes to Meenu in the rain was really romantic. 😳 Both acted so well, even though had small roles.

Sheesh, the pressures of the industry...John and Vidya were one of the saving graces of the otherwise cataclysmal SEI....Her role in Guru was a small but pivotal one,and she acted well in the very few scenes she had...Infact I felt Meenu was more profound than Sujatha, and if there's one character in that film whom my heart bled for,it was Meenu...I had no sympathy for Gurubhai or Sujatha, but I cried when Meenu was on her deathbed 😭 ....Vidya really rose above the script, which even Abhishek failed to!!

Eklavya was a bad film, and if anyone should face the flak, its VVC..Vidya was only a sidekick, and the failure of the film shouldnt be affecting her gravely....She has refused two Yashraj films(Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Laga Chunari mein daag) where she was to play second fiddle,I'm sure she wouldnt be playing inconsequential roles anymore....

She has a good line up,Halla Bol and Heyy Babyy which is a commercial potboiler where she's the single heroine and the main lead...Then a remake of a Malayalam film where she'd be playing a schizophreniac dancer...Vidya was voted the "Face to look out for in 2007", by Filmfare where she garnered the maximum percentage of votes.... 👏 👏 .Among the men,it was Hrithik followed by Abhishek, and among the grls,it was Vidya .....She was voted the hottest girl of Guru on rediff(which ofcourse isnt true,as Vidya isnt quite Hot or sexy, but it proves that the audience like her more than Ash and Mallika).... 👏
