Titanic scarred me for life. It took my young mind forever to get over it but ultimately I was only able to forcefully put it away never being able to come to terms with the loss of Jack. I even hated Rose for a looong time for hogging that board like a queen while he was freezing to death. 😭🤣 I think it’s not an exaggeration to say that a piece of every girl’s heart died with Jack.smiley19

Wasn’t it predictable that one of them would die given that they were on the Titanic?

Sholay’s ending always makes me cry specially when Jaya’s character sees Jay dying, cries into her FIL’s chest, and he can’t even hug her because he has no arms 😭. And then the Ye Dosti song slow version starts playing.

Starting at around 3:14 mark.

When Lucky Spencer died in General Hopsital it was a cry fest for a week and then the Columbine school shooting happened so everyone was crying for real then 😢

Really?

First thing I do before starting a new drama or novel or movie is to see if it has a happy ending or not because I can't cope with the loss of characters I love 🤧

I came across a new drama and in the first episode itself, I am into this character who is going to die in final episode

I just wish he wouldn't die but I know that he would but I can't stop because I love everything about this drama, the writer could have written a happy ending for him 😭😭😭😭🤧

Hence the post

Unless there is an absolute need of having to drive a point home like in the movie Titanic, I hate sad endings and try to avoid them as much as I can. But it is also true that sad endings and open endings linger in your memory more than the happy endings which is why the creatives often go for it.

I haven't seen Titanic because it doesn't have a happy ending

I think when it comes to story telling of any kind, movies or theater or books, tragic endings are taken more seriously and critiqued more favorably compared to happy endings. This has always been the case. I’m not sure why. Maybe sad endings are seen as more realistic or maybe happy endings are seen as rather sappy 🤷🏽‍♀️

Critics are stupid people who are just ruining everything TBH, they wanna see reality of life because they don't see it in their day to day life but they don't understand that people who are witnessing misery all around them wouldn't be able to handle it when watching something for fun

You are more vulnerable when you are watching a movie or television

Exactly. Not everyone wants to watch reality of life in a tv show or movie. We want to see something happy and fun as well.

It is just even the shows that are tagged as comedy or romantic comedy nowadays are filled with too much of real life struggles that it fails to deliver the lightheartness one wishes to see on screen.

Some shows needs those sad moments to make it memorable and also because the plot needs those moments. But nowadays people are just shown to struggle on screen all the time instead even if the plot doesn't need such sad arcs

For me, it mostly depends on the story. Like if the couple has been separated throughout the movie, then I would root for them to end up together, like in VZ I would have been heartbroken if they didn't reunite after so many sacrifices.😭 Then there's movies like Kabir Singh, when the couple do not deserve a happy ending but still get one!

Most of the time though, sad endings leave a bigger impact and make me more emotional and sympathetic towards the characters. This is the reason why my husband hates sad endings though, he says they leave him disturbed for days.smiley36 I mostly find happy endings too cliche tbh, I like unpredictable endings

That’s a major hell-to-the-no-nope-nada-I’m-outta-here-nice-to-meet-you-situation-for-me. I detest sad endings and in fact will refuse to watch any movie or drama if I find out it has a sad ending. Before purchasing any romance novel, I will read the last page to ensure the characters end up together.

I take sad endings personally and will cry harder than all the affected characters combined in the film. In fact, I’m the unpaid and unknown side character who will cry for the next 50 years over the ending. It’s actually not normal how much I cried over Kal Ho Na. Those weren’t just silent tears, I fcuking wailed from the depths of my soul. I went to bed and cried over Aman’s death for a whole week. My mum was WTFING seeing me sniffle with red-rimmed eyes everyday and I’d brokenly whisper ‘You don’t understand’. Twenty years later and I still cry just THINKING about the film.

I also accidentally watched a Korean drama ‘Scarlet Heart’ while it was ongoing. My mistake, as I always wait for a show to finish before I start it (so I can watch the last episode first to ensure they end up together). I WAS NOT OKAY. I cried for a whole month traumatised by the ending.

The list of all my traumatic reactions to all sad movies and dramas are endless. We’ll be here all day if I had to dissect the amount of times I’ve walked around as SRK’s widow mourning his characters death in every film.

Also a reason why I never watch Pakistani dramas. The hero and heroine almost always end up marrying someone else and 0.000000000000000000% likely to reunite at the end. Bam wam no thank you ma’am.
