Salman Khan was miffed when he was passed over by Bhansali for Devdas since Bhansali had always cast him in his films till then.

Could Salman have pulled off the role of Devdas? Playing an alcoholic would not have been a reach for him.

Bhansali wanted to make Bajirao Mastani with Salman & Aish. This was original cast on which he visualise the film. Later, he made with deepveer.

No, Salman could never pull off a role like Devdas. He couldn't emote those emotions, which is quite long in 2nd half. He did Tere Naam very well but he manage it with that swaggy 1st half.

Khan Saab ruined iconic role done by Dilip Saab. The only Star who could have done Devdas better at that time would have been Hrithik or Aamir.

Padmavaat as well. Aish agreed if Salman had no scenes with her. Salman refused to do the movie if Aish wouldn't be in scenes with him. Shahrukh was also considered for the Ranveer role during this time. When the film was made with the final casting of Deepveer, Shahrukh was instead offered Shahid's role but he felt it was too inconsequential.

This is new info, I never knew.

I believe bhansali has the ability to pull off the best from actors he work. I wish to see 1 more film of bhansali with Salman.

Salman was charismatic in both Khamoshi & HDDCS, but Bhansali never wrote that intense part for him. I want a solo romantic film starring Salman with Sushmita or Shilpa Shetty, it would have been cool experience.

I'll post links as well.

Salman was on bad terms with him after Devdas. They made up which is why he appeared in Saawariya. Then Hrithik got Guzaarish and Salman could not forgive Bhansali again, so to my knowledge, they have been on bad terms ever since. Salman is very particular about friends either not casting him or refusing to be cast by him. He had the same problems with Priyanka. I'll give him this that he forgave them both before being let down a second time.

I could see him as Devdas but not in Guzaarish. That role he could not have done.

With Shilpa and Sushmita, he's only done romantic comedies. The closest to a serious romance with Shilpa is Phir Milenge but that's a serious drama film where he infects her with AIDS and dies tragically in the end.

Salman wasn't miffed because Bhansali opted for SRK. He was pissed as he was the last person to know that he wasn't doing Devdas. Bhansali had apparently told him that he'd be doing his next project, which was supposed to be Bajirao like Guddu Pandit said. But the Aish/Sallu fiasco at the time put the project on the back burner. Then, Bhansali wanted to do Bajirao with Salman and Kareena, but Kyun Ki flopped, so he wasn't interested.

Could Salman have done justice to the role? I don't know. SLB was in his masturbatory, self-indulgent phase by then. And, SRK hammed like never before. I think Salman's Devdas would have been similar to the second half of Tere Naam, but with Dilip Saab already setting the standard so high, no actor could have done justice to that role.

Even today, Devdas is known more for its opulence and not its narrative.

Also, as Guddu Pandit said, Bhansali never wrote an author-backed role for Salman. In Khamoshi, it was all about Manisha and HDDCS was about Aishwarya. I don't think I'd like to see them do a movie together, tbh.

Kashyap criticized both Devdas and Black iirc. He's talked about Black in a podcast. It was basically a Bhansali wank-fest. I still think that Bhansali's best movies are Khamoshi and HDDCS.

Great to the point post as always.

One thing which I liked best from bhansali is the way he has presented Salman in both the films. No doubt he was voted 7th sexiest man in world in People's magazine after Dharam ji. His costumes, hair style were so so fab, especially Khamoshi. A Shirt, jeans is common, we all wear it, but Salman made it look like a dream style. Colors, ring in ears, that no aggressive voice, soft tone & those 1 liners "Jab tum hasti ho, you look ugly"..... That is a special attention detail only a director could visualise. And that music, jaana suno hum tum pe marte hai..... Despite film concentrating mainly on Manisha, Nana & Seema biswas, you can't help it but fall for that lover boy playing 🎸.
