If Aradhya ever talks about the Rai family to her kids, should she mention her Rai grandfather? I would think she mentions Aishwarya Rai.

This whole premise of *oh, he's patriarchal* in this instance is outrage looking for an offense.

Jaya and Aishwarya have contributed way more than Abhishek. It's juvenile to deny that.

If anything it's patriarchal that lineage is passed on through the men's side of the family and they hold more importance.

What about Aradhya's maternal grandpa, didn't he and Aish's brother serve in the army.. her side of the family seem humble. More to look upto than bratty Abhishek and Shweta and sourpuss Jaya.

I mean he has never been able to get out from under the pressure himself and he's saying he won't put pressure on his daughter? LOL. Everything he's said in this quote is only pressurising and nothing else. These people are so closed minded. They think they are at some kind of pedestal. Sure Harivansh Rai Bachchan achieved something and so did Amitabh which could be called great but Abhishek? How is he talking about himself in the same breath as those two?I'm sorry he's just delusional and also very very mediocre. He's just lucky to be born in that family. And I think Ash should teach Aaradhya how to be independent and capable like she is. And not like what this idiot is saying that he never felt the need to stand out LOL. As if he had an option. When you are such a loser, how can you ever stand out? Most of the times I see him copying Amitabh's style of acting, expressions, body language etc. He doesn't have the guts or the capability to stand out and he's disguising that as something noble that he's doing for his family. BS.

Sorry to interrupt the convo but I feel like this isn't true. Amitabh was a popular actor but so were others like Rajesh Khanna or Dharmendra or Dilip Kumar. I don't think those surnames are as powerful as Bachchans. When Amitabh debuted, he wasn't some celebrity already or that well known or anything. Yes, his father must be but that didn't make them the Bachchans. I think when a family becomes powerful like that, then it's because of the various people in the family that join the same field and get different levels of famous. So, a Jaya or a Teji or an Ash are just as important for the Bachchan family to have the kind of image they have today as the so called "real Bachchans", the males.

Most of Redditors seem to get what IFers aren't getting. Cross posting a few comments here:

I watched a clip of him earlier on YouTube talking about how he was so upset about having to do bed rest after contracting covid (which Aish helped reframe his perspective on). It seemed like a great story but I couldn't help but focus on his tone when he kept discussing that men are not build to sit around all day and enjoy the view. Implication being that women can endlessly enjoy doing nothing. I wish he realized how sexist he sounded in regards to his tone and attitude. Women also have a need to be useful and not sit around bored all day. And ofc not all men and not all women fall into that scope.

--

I hope Aradhaya gets to know and value her mother's contributions also! Aishwarya has been a global achiever in many aspects. Even Jaya jee comes from a reputable family with a good legacy of work behind her.

Legacy k baare me samjhana hain to sabke baare me samjhaao na.. why only father, grandfather??

--

The joke is that he thinks he's achieved something that his daughter must be respectful for, maybe marrying her mother?

--

It is insane how they never speak about Jaya. She is the better actor.

--

I mean is it really a surprise that this family always considers the women as secondary? They'll always be treated as an afterthought no matter how accomplished they are.

--

Imagine having a trailblazer like Aishwarya Rai as your mom and then your dad telling you but wait my last name is super important.

--

I found it so funny that he sneakily inserted himself in the list as father, while mentioning the achievements of actual legends - grandfather and great-grandfather; while himself being nothing but a more lucky version of Uday Chopra.

--

What exactly has her father achieved? Her mother and grand mother have ten time bigger legacy then him.How difficult it was to include them in his patriarchal tirade?

--

This reminds me of a personal family incident recently. My maternal grandfather’s 100th birthday was celebrated. My cousin bought space in a national newspaper to commemorate it.

My maternal grandfather had five kids, three sons and three daughters. My cousin listed all the sons and their kids, obliterating the daughters and all their children for the newspaper.

When the newspaper came out, obviously, the names of the daughters and their entire families was missing, including mysel. My mother was not alive to see this. Her sisters attended, so did their kids. Imagine how it made us feel, including my elderly father to see that his wife was not even acknowledged.

And why, because we do not have the same last name and because my mother did not have the same last name. As if that removed her right to be called his daughter

Okay, so he mentioned himself. tell me, what did Jaya do for Bachchan legacy for Abhishek to mention her in that context? She left a body of work, and yes, she kept the family running, but what did she do for Bachchan family legacy? What did Shweta do?

Moreover, Jaya and Aishwarya are not Bachchans. They married into the family.

Also, someone else mentioned here Abhishek talked about his mother at length in the same podcast. So why selectively quote?

You're wrong about this, my friend.

Lemme add here. Calling Aishwarya a Bachchan is regressive as heck. Talk about ingrained sexism! She was born into HER OWN FAMILY. So were Jaya and Teji.

The original post promotes the idea that women leave their own families and join their husbands.

The only woman Abhishek could possibly have mentioned in the context was Shweta, and what did she do to contribute to the family legacy?

In fact, the people who claim otherwise are agreeing with Amitabh's nauseating claim how Shweta was no longer a Bachchan but a Nanda.

It’s great that Abhishek talks about living and looking after his own parents and the bachchan surname.

But what about Aishwarya’s parents ? Can Ash get her mother to stay with the Bachchans after her dad passed away ??? No right. That is where patriarchy comes in.

Also what about the name and success that Ash has got ? She is so much more famous than her husband . But she gave it all up to be a housewife don’t know if it was her own choice or so that Abhishek gets all the limelight! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Ash has even stoppped attending any kind of events except Cannes. She is not papped , hardly comes out for premieres, functions etc. Abhi is almost always alone.

Abhi is a great guy but yeah when I saw that podcast first time I did feel he was being patriarchal.
