I would have to disagree. Nepotism is when you get a job because you're someone's friend or family. Getting you into an audition is access. It helps certainly. But it is not nepotism. I highly doubt anyone gave Vicky a role because he was Sham Kaushal's son.
Fair to disagree. But, I feel that you have a narrow and inaccurate definition of nepotism.
Nepotism is any privilege granted to relatives or friends. It can range from securing a job interview to offering the job on a platter. So access isn't something completely different from nepotism but one form it takes.
There is no doubt Vicky Kaushal is talented, hardworking, and deserving of every ounce of success he has. But by definition, he is a product of nepotism. And dozens of people in the movies get jobs due to nepotism - makeup artists, hairdressers, set designers, and more.
This is why I will continue to maintain - people aren't against nepotism per se. If nepotism grants small favors or obscure jobs, no one cares. It is only the glitz and glamor of lead roles that people are up in arms about.

The wider you define, the more unfair its going to get. Any connection with an industry cannot be called nepotism.
I'm not against nepotism in any case. Just against the unfair lumping of some of the most privileged on the planet with someone who worked his butt off for his successes.
Yo hold upp, I just looked up his father’s body of work. GOG, PK, Bhaag Milkha to name a few and he’s an awarded action director not some abcd in the industry. Am I undermining Vicky’s success? Nuh huh. But this argument that he comes from a less privileged name hence this isn’t nepotism is so bizarre. This while acknowledging he had access in the industry lmao.

You are 100% right. Vicky is in the same category as Rishi Kapoor's son who declared on KwK all the good films come to him first.
Or like Hrithik, whose father made his debut film.
Or Abhishek Bachchan, who chose between multiple directors.
Or even like Harshvardhan Kapoor, who has the luxury of choosing to do only films which suit his elite sensibilities.
Or Sonam Kapoor, who debuted in a Bhansali film.
Or Jhanvi Kapoor, who is headlining several movies without giving a single hit
Or even Shraddha Kapoor, who debuted with Yashraj.
Vicky Kaushal is 100% privileged like the rest. God help us all because there's none so blind as those who refuse to see.
By Anupama Ji's definition.
Few people will avoid watching Dunki coz it's being directed by Hirani who was OUAT associated with VVC who happens to be Anupama Ji's husband.
Those non watchers dislike her immensely and will skip Dunki by association
No. What I find bizarre is this categorisation. By this logic it isn’t nepotism when kids the likes of Chunky Pandey, Shakti Kapoor who are bottom rung of the industry compared to the great Bacchan’s, Kapoor’s, get work.
Anyway, dost Vicky is doing well. You don’t have to justify his success because Anupama (who takes her seriously!?) likened him to whoever. Nepotism isn’t a dirty word. Karan Johar’s nexus on the other hand…
This thread reminds me of those back in 2015-16 when people would try hard to convince people that Ranveer is actually an outsider despite him being in the same circle as Sonam and RK as kids and his mother being related to Kapoors.
The circle you grow up in helps a lot a lot to provide chances.
Ananya Pandey's father is a nobody among BW elites but KJo took a liking to her. Shraddha on the other hand had less of a fortune but they both are nepo kids. You cant define nepotism based on how many movies they were offered. That is not how definition works.
Vicky Koushal and his brother are nepo babies for sure. Anybody who has father, mother or older brother or sister working in the industry is a nepo baby.
As far VK's father is concerned he is not well known outside industry because he is part of the backend crew. For a movie only the director producer music composer and singers and actors are headlined, the backend technical crew doesn't get highlighted. Like Ajay Devgan's father Veeru Devgan VK's dad is quite well connected and influential in the industry.
However everyone including Karan Johar is not an idiot to cast anyone simply because they are children of Industry person
Nepo babies get role on the basis of their saleability to distributors. Which itself is based on the popularity / visibility in media of that nepo baby.
The actors are the face of a movie, their visibility is a marketing expense. When a producer casts Jahnvi he knows that she will pull in media for interviews and promotions as she is Sridevi's daughter. His own expense on marketing the movie to distributors and media is reduced. Whereas Vicky Koushal before he married Katrina would require a big expense in marketing the movie.
Specially in tier II and tier 3 cities distributors prefer nepo babies to cash in on their parents star value. I remember a discussion with a friend on Abhishek Bachchan when he had just started. My Friend's uncle owned a theatre in Bhopal. Arjun Rampal was trying to make his name the same time as Abhishek and the uncle made the statement that "Amitabh's son would get in enough crowd to pay for electricity even if the movie is thrid rate, so I pay the price distributor asks" but if I have to screen Arjun Rampal movie I only buy it at the cheapest possible price as unless the movie is very good and word of mouth is positive I will not make money.
Movie making is a business end of the day
Access would be someone like Bhumi Pednekar who was working as assistant casting director before she got an acting role. Or Aishwarya Rai / Sushmita Sen and other Miss India's due to their beauty pageant win. John Abraham would be another example of access. Shahrukh was example of access, not outsider. His theatre mentors connected him to Aziz Mirza who then connected him to Vivek vaswani and who connected him to Aditya Chopra who connected him to Karan Johar.
If for eg Manish Malhotra has a son who gets casted by KJo it would again be a nepo baby situation because Manish Malhotra is an insider
Difference between Nepo Baby, Access person and Outsider is very simple.
For a Nepo Baby they can land at a producer/director's home and have lunch with them while pitching themselves for the role
For an access person they can make a phone call to office and get appointments with the producer and director directly to pitch themselves for the role
Outsiders have no direct way of contacting producer and directors till they have a sufficient number of hit films.
We have eg of Ayushman Khurana when he couldn't reach Kjo at all till he became successful.
Whether they get the role or not simply is based on their saleability and not their ability to act. Good actors have to acquire their saleability by giving their own multiple hit films, nepo babies bring it due to their parents hit films
