How did Bunny fall for Naina?

This came up in the wrong teachings of Bollywood thread, where it was stated that he fell for her because she transformed from a nerd to a hottie. Was that really the reason he fell for her?

Agreed Bunny was as flirty if not flirtier with Naina when she had glasses. Girls or guys with social anxiety are often no less than others. They just feel less confident because they are not used to interacting freely with a lot of people. Naina has a boring lifestyle. In fact, the whole reason she fell for Bunny as he gave her a boost of confidence when she was feeling invisible on the tracking trip. The only time he gave Naina second-hand treatment was when he tied her up and stopped her from winning the race to impress Lara. But he himself said Naina is not for time pass she is the type of girl you fall in love with. Was this because she was a Sati Savitri and Lara's character was portrayed as dumb? Was that wrong too? Probably!

He made up for it by helping her dance better at the Sangeet. Was this because she had supposedly transformed into a hottie? Or was it because he saw her disappointment and knew that winning was important to her there? That is when you can say he came across as a bit shallow and treated her differently because she had supposedly transformed. She never showed that much interest in winning the race. Although she was visibly angry when he tied her up.

But if we think about it. It was never really made clear when he fell for her. Even when he came back he was awkward around his other friends but more comfortable around her. Is that because she was just an acquaintance he met once and they had no expectations from her? Why did he ask her and not his other friends to go exploring Udaipur with him? It was clear during the sangeet he had developed more feelings for her than he had earlier. But when did this happen and how? Again YJHD lacks logic compared to Wake up Sid.

She loved him. He saw that love and automatically fell in love with her. Pretty simple.

Naina didn't turn from a nerd to a hottie just because she took off her glasses. Taking off her glasses symbolized a personality change. She got over her social awkwardness and became more carefree in nature.

When did Bunny fell in love with Naina? Its difficult to say. They were classmates in school so he could have a thing for her from then only. Maybe he liked her but never made a move because she was a nerd and would never date him. Also it would've effected his cool image in school to go out with her.

Most likely Bunny got attracted to Naina when he met her again on train station after years. The scene was written like puberty hit Naina and she has grown up to be a beautiful young girl but is yet to realize it. Bunny straight up starts flirting with her when they first meet in the movie. Although its also mentioned he hardly talked to her when they were in school. He even told her how he dreams of travelling the world, something which he never talked about with anyone including his best friends Avi and Aditi. Bunny considered Naina special enough to share it with her.

He also praised her for being gutsy and coming on this trip all alone when she was feeling low. I'll say he fell in love with her during the trekking trip only. But he had to follow his dreams so just like Naina, he didn't tell his feelings to her. The line "Tumhari jaisi ladkiyan flirting ke liye nahi, pyar karne ke liye bani hain. Aur pyar meri sehat ke liye bilkul achha nahi hain" might be sexist, but it tells about Bunny's thought process. Falling in love would've made it difficult for him to follow his dreams, and in the end we see him struggling with these choices. He had to choose between his dreams and Naina.

Since the first half of the film is Naina narrating a flashback, we see things from her POV. We don't get to see exactly what Bunny feels about Naina. But even in the second half, when Bunny and Naina first see each other after eight years during Badtameez Dil song, there's a moment when Bunny turns back and looks at Naina before greeting Aditi. The way he looked at her, that's not how someone looks at a casual friend whom you met 8 years ago, and were together with only for one month. He didn't fell in love with her during Aditi's wedding for sure. He had a thing for her from before.

Bunny in first half was passionate and clear about his goals. He didn't let Naina be a distraction to it. Bunny in second half was getting tired of his nomad type lifestyle. So he spent more time with Naina because he needed and wanted that distraction.

Why he helped her win the dance competition in the sangeet ceremony? Because unlike the race this time he wasn't competing against her.

Why he was more freely talking with Naina than with his best friends during Aditi's wedding? The same reason you said.

Why did he ask her and not his other friends to go exploring Udaipur with him? The same answer as above. Avi was not talking to him. And Aditi was busy in her wedding.

Am I giving this movie more thought than the writers and director did? Probably, so I'll stop now.😆

Wait. Bunny made up for what exactly. For tying her shoelace six years ago? I am sure neither Bunny nor Naina was so childish to remember that silly prank from years ago. 😆

Even the dance competition did not have some big ulterior motive behind it. It was just fun and games. Bit of flirting

Coming to when Bunny fell for Naina -

Bunny was always attracted to her. Right from their first meet at the station.

"Agar mere paas dil hota toh smile par pukka aa jata" - that was him indirectly confessing that he is attracted to her.

https://youtu.be/HaOyOpE8VoY

The attraction grows, as they spend more time together talking about their ambitions

How Well Do You Know Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani?

But for a 20-year-old Bunny, his dreams took priority over everything else. Which was obviously the most logical decision to take. So, he leaves to pursue his dream

Naina moves on.

They reconnect again at Aditi s wedding. This time they were not immature youngsters on a track. Trying to get away from their reality in Naina s case.

They are fully grown, mature adults. Old sparked fly of course. But this time they connect on a much deeper level. This is clearly evident from all their conversation throughout the second half

Bunny confesses to His dad s death. All the regrets that he had. Them talking about their different outlook on life .

Dichotomy of Irony: More Love for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

This was where the attraction turned into love.

Bunny s conversation with Aditi is when he finally realized that he is in love with Naina

https://youtu.be/LqR8QCsKQl4

But of course. Their worlds were completely different. But this time Bunny was ready to settle down. Ready to make changes to his big plans for another thing. He finally understood and acknowledged the importance of other things in life, apart from his career

People often talk about how Bunny and Naina would not have lasted. But I think they would do just fine.

Neither of them was under any illusion when they started dating. They were fully aware of each other s thought process and their own expectations

Communication is the key to a good, healthy relationship. Both Bunny and Naina were very good at communicating to eachother

YJHD is not a very plot-driven movie. But it is character driven

Bunny, Naina and Aditi had great character arcs
