Apparently Rani Mukherji opted out of Mira Nair's The Namesake because Abhishek Bachchan quit the film

Bonding over roles refused? Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji

There's no doubt that Tabu has done a great job of playing a Kolkata-born, thoroughly confused Bengali in America, in Mira Nair's The Namesake. But everyone knows that originally it was Rani Mukherji who was supposed to play the part. According to Mira Nair, Rani didn't end up doing the film because Mira didn't see her ageing in the film. "For The Namesake I wonder if Rani would have been comfortable aging far older than she is. The heroine in my film has to go from 21 to 50," she says.

What many don't know is that Rani opted out of The Namesake more because of Abhishek Bachchan than anything else. Abhishek was initially supposed to play the part of Rani's son, the namesake of Nikolai Gogol (finally played by Kal Penn). But when he realised that the script included one semi-nude scene and some kisses, Abhishek backed out saying he was too uncomfortable to do the needful on screen.

Mira Nair

Apparently this angered Mira Nair no end for it upset all her plans, and on an impulse she ended up venting this anger on Abhishek's secretary, without mincing too many words. And that was that.

But Mira was in for another piece of bad news when Rani decided to take her cue from Abhishek Bachchan and opted out of the film too. Now, we know she has always had a soft spot for Bachchan Junior. But isn't this taking personal liking a little far?

they definitely make a better pair than Ash-Abhi, but what about the whole Rani-Aditya thing? 😕

😆 I think rani moved to aditya after finding out abhi has hots for ash and ash only.. i think he only considered rani a good friend.. nothing more... i think 😉

Rani is an amazing actress, no matter what kind of articles and comments people and some forum members make about her alleged interest in ABHI & ADI.

I think it is good that both opted out of the film, Rani playing Abhishek's mother. I just don't see while Abhishek doing semi nude scenes is again something I won't want to see.

ok this is getting way too creepy...nude scenes and kissing scenes...B-wood is getting more like H-wood everyday!!!

BTW Abhi looks sooooooooooooooo cute in the pic 😳 ..Rani looks tired 😭

Rani brings out the BEST in Abhishek,they look so cute together...An otherwise mediocre looking Abhi,and mediocre looking Rani look very cute and endearing when together

Hopefully they do more movies,I pray Abhi has the sense to realize that Rani and Priyanka are his golden geese
