Ajay was coming out of a tear too, he just did All the Best, Golmaal 2 etc then after Rajineeti he did hits like OUTUIM, Golmaal 3, Bol Bachchan. Heck in those 3 years Ajay must have had more clean hits than Ranbir has had his whole career.

Varun has had a pretty good run without directors, actresses or budgets as big as those Ranbir/Ranveer have. He picked a side lane budget/plot wise, built a small but loyal base and gets consistent openings/lifetimes. Much better than the likes of Siddharth, Vicky etc. floating on the back of one or two films.

Without directors? He got work with people like Shoojit Sarkar who most would call a God film maker. Only Vishal Bhardwaj and a few others can measure up to his prestige. Truth is Varun is no where near talented as the actors Shoojit ji normally choses like Vicky or Irfan Khan.

Not to mention the film he has coming out with the director who directed Dangal.
