Liked hahk being a kid. The whole big family thing excited me then. But whenever I see any barjatya movie now, I see how regressive they're.

And ddlj, well I never liked. Most overrated movie made in history ever. Loved the songs though.

DDLJ of course. HAHK was just so cringe with the very unrealistic over the top diabetes inducing family fest 🤢

HAHK is a way better visual treat with way more gorgeous leads compared to DDLJ whose leads do not look good even with make up. You cannot compare Salman and MD at their peak with these non lookers.

Anyway HAHK grossed more than DDLJ and is highest grossing film of that decade and brought families to theatres. So audience has already given its verdict decades ago.

If one goes with the audience's verdict, it would be only fair to consider also the following years.

DDLJ seems to have something that made this movie a long-time-runner.

YRF paid Maratha Mandir after a point to keep running DDLJ. It didn't organically run for 20+ years

I don't think Kajol and SRK were bad looking even back then.

I don't like Kajol off-screen, but she looked unconventionally and uniquely beautiful in the 90s.👍🏼 And surgery or whatever, she looks great today. Kajol and Shilpa are the only 2 actresses from the 90s who look better today, than they ever did in the 90s.

I'd say they all had their phases.

Even Madhuri didn't look as good during her initial years. Peak Salman was better than peak SRK in terms of looks, but SRK was always more charming and entertaining than him.smiley32

and Sallu has aged very badly among all 4.

DDLJ did NOT run on its own. YRF paid Maratha Mandir to run it for all these years just to break records of Sholay that ran at Minerva for 5 years. Actually Sholay could have run longer at Minerva too if Sippys had not asked them to take it down to make way for their more expensive and ambitious project Shaan.

By no means has DDLJ outdone HAHK in gross, impact or audience reception.

HAHK changed not only Indian cinema but also Indian TV with serials still copying its scenes and songs. HAHK also introduced sangeets, celebrations to real life where such elaborate wedding or pregnancy rituals were not celebrated earlier.

I agree with everything you said. I love the fact that HAHK songs are still played at every Hindu wedding in India and people love to dance on those songs.

But I also feel DDLJ also had impacted Indian cinema in a lot of ways. It revived and rejuvenated romance genre in Bollywood, made Switzerland/Outdoor very common.

And internationally, it is celebrated more internationally at various Bollywood Cons and festivals.

DDLJ is also considered one of the most parodied film after Sholay.

I actually and criticize both films equally.😆

You are being polite with use of words like 'unconventional' or 'charming'.

But it is clear Madhuri is one of most beautiful faces to have hit Indian cine screen and Kajol never had any looks to talk of. Kajol has girl next door appeal but no looks or beauty at al, no matter how one spins it. She is known for natural or bindaas acting in big budget films with Khans. She would have had no career if she was not a nepo kid getting big budget films on a platter. Madhuri has been compared to iconic beauties like Suchitra Sen and Madhubala in past. Kajol figures nowhere in looks discussions even after skin lightening and makeover. She looked her worst in early 90s tbh.

Salman is anyday more handsome than SRK ever was or ever will be. He has twice been voted among most handsome men in the world by global edition of People magazine. And is indeed one of most handsome actors in history of Indian cinema and his looks were at peak in 90s.

So these words like charm etc do not take away from the fact that Salman is way more handsome and eye candy material than SRK ever was.

Salman is more charismatic onscreen which is why only he can make trash like Dabanng or Ready work.

I stand by the fact that HAHK has way better eye candy leads and beautiful onscreen hero and heroine jodi compared to DDLJ.

Salman and MD was like a casting coup with most beautiful male and female faces of that time coming together kind of like Dharmendra and Hema Malini earlier or Hrithik and Ash in 2006.

Let's agree to disagree. SRK and Kajol are NO match to Salman and Madhuri in terms of looks and Kajol especially is nowhere in comparison to Madhuri in acting, beauty, grace, voice modulation, screen presence, charisma, dance and all rounder abilities as a performer. Even painters like MF Hussain went obsessed with Madhuri and her portrayal of stages of girlhood to womanhood in HAHK and her sarees, lehengas, looks became huge in 90s with her poster everywhere at all dress stores and beauty parlours. Nothing of that sort for Kajol in DDLJ. Heck. Even Amrish Puri as strict dad or that cowbell and train are more popular than Kajol in DDLJ. DDLJ belongs more to SRK and Amrish and Kajol hardly had imposing screen presence or role as MD had in HAHK.

There is NO visual delight or eye candy in DDLJ except foreign locations. Unlike HAHK which needed no foreign locations since its leads itself were visual delight.

So again, let us agree to disagree on the eye candy part. Beauty is either there or not. It is like Lycra tagline - you either have it or you don't. And SRK and Kajol never had it in terms of looks. Nor are they famous for looks. It's same as Amitabh was never as handsome as Dharam or Vinod. Facts. Cold hard facts.

Romance was brought back in BW way earlier with QSQT and MPK succeeding way before DDLJ. Lot of romantic hits were made by then be it Dil, HHRPK, Deewana, Chandni, DHKMN, Saajan. DDLJ DID NOT revive romance in Indian cinema at all.

Rather DDLJ profited from success of MPK, QSQT, HAHK and simply copied wedding scenes, copied antakshri scene from MPK and only twist was NRI dad and train scene or convincing dad.

Parodies are subjective. HAHK, Mr India, MPK also had lot of parodies. DDLJ being most parodied after Sholay is subjective.

Foreign locations were already popularised by Yash Chopra from Silsila, Chandni, Kabhi kabhie, Darr etc which released before DDLJ. Manmohan Desai also popularised foreign locations in films like Naseeb.

Earlier in 60s also films were shot abroad in Japan, Russia etc by Nasir Hussain, Raj Kapoor etc. It is not like DDLJ is first film to introduce foreign locations.
