Finally watched the movie and enjoyed it quite a lot. But it could have been so much more if the director had done a better job with the important moments in the movie
It was a classic Dharma venture with the big budget, big starcast, huge sets, lots of drama and melodrama, and hit songs. And yet it never got elevated to the level of K3G, KKHH, etc. The outburst scenes of the characters, the argument between the leads, the emotional moments between the MIL and SIL were good but thanda.
Where were the tears ? Saare characters ka ronay dhonay ka scene tha but I could not spot a single aansoo. Kiara was the only one who did somewhat of a convincing job in those melodrama scenes. Anil Kapoor and Neetu Singh with their botoxed faces could literally not move a muscle
I naturally compared it to the emotional scenes of k3g, the heartbreak scenes of khnh and KKHH and the obvious difference was the direction. Yeah these movies might have excessive melodrama but in that moment when those scenes are happening, it does pull you into the story and makes you care about the characters and their emotions. It makes you cry because you see real tears and real emotions. I mean compare the keh diya na scene with jaya-bigb to the anil-neetu scene Or the much ridiculed mall scene with srk-jaya vs the thanda varun-neetu scenes and the difference is stark. Those moments elevate the movie and KJo has to get a shitload of credit for that. I wish he would have the guts to go that route again instead of making modern fluff love stories like ADHM and SoTY. Although even these movies had those moments of high emotion which will be remembered
RANT over
I think you miss the 90s/00s style of acting. Back then, overdramatic scenes were used all the time, and like you said, the story (and songs) catered to the melodrama. But many of the youth of today find that cringy, and that style has long passed for a new wave of acting.
KJO tried to make a melodrama in Kalank but not only was the story bad the sadness was completely misplaced and it flopped.
