BOI is definitely trying really hard not to declare SP a disaster. My guess is after Monday they’ll just stop reporting on it and ignore it. Sort of like if I don’t announce a disaster there was no disaster 😆

Both Wiki and Box office have different numbers.According to box office Gangubai is a flop but according to Wiki it is a hit/could recover it's budget.Don't know which one is true but I believe in Box office more than Wiki.Box office really have guts to call it a flop.

Waise if I haven't looked box office website and PD comment I would have never known GK flopped since it got very good reviews and praises & no one dared called it flop😆

Verdicts are calculated by how much profit the distributors make. I don’t know how their profits is calculated though. The movie has to make more than their price of purchase but how much more I’m not sure. I’ve read 20% more and I’ve also read double the price of purchase for a hit tag.

A lot of people think calculating a hit verdict this way is a cop out by producers and/or the industry because a movie’s box office collection not even reaching its budget seems like a blatant failure of a business deal. But I guess keeping the music and satellite rights in mind producers almost always make a profit or at least break even.

Back to Gangu, in the first week of its release BOI started talking about Sattalite and OTT deals and basically conflated 2-3 different things just to put a positive spin on the movie’s low opening numbers. Sort of like what they are doing with SP now but in a different manner. Gangu’s budget was around 160cr. The only number I found for it’s distributors price is 90cr. If the distributors profit is at 20% then at a total number of 124cr it’s a hit. But if the distributors profit is double the purchase price then it needed 180cr to be a hit. One thing for sure, it’s not a blockbuster or even a super hit.

Oh this explains so so much..what I was just talking about..its the distributors price..that is why all these listed movies are successes despite more budget than domestic net..thanks for that

Pen India Limited is the producer (along with SLB) and distributor. How does it work when producer is the distributor? Like YRF produced and distributed Samrat Prithviraj

Gangubai is clear flop based on collections but declared hit due to hype 😆

If it's budget is less than definitely we can call it a hit and many other films also

Best example for recent times is radheshyam, it has huge collections of 150+ crores for a south film. It can easily called a blockbuster but it is called a disaster because of budget of 350 crores.

Same goes to RRR, it 650 crores and overall it is blockbuster but consider only Hindi belt, it is average because of budget and collection.

Where KGF is 100crores budget and collected 1200 crores...

So which movie is a real hit and which one is flop... All depends on budget.

But if everyone overestimates a movie and distributors lose money then it’s a hot mess. Remember Tubelight and how after about a week everyone started talking about distributors’ Ki laashein? I think salman ended up paying them some of their money back. If I’m not mistaken Rajnikanth also paid the distributors of one of his flops a few years ago.

yes who can forget that..it is never as simple..i remember being told earlier too..it is always based on the distributors share..

but i feel post pandemic things are different as well.. producers are selling it to distributors for lower prices..which is how these two emerged hits

1) sooryavanshi ..budget listed by BOI is 250cr and net domestic 190cr

2) gangubai..budget listed by BOI..160cr..net domestic 130cr

If distributors have purchased these are lower prices..which I feel is the case..verdicts make sense to me

How much is SP sold to distributors for? That would be the key here..
