Actuallt it makes sense. When you walk around in ethnic lingerie nobody's going to look at your face . Dangle some treats and get everyone distracted when you need to smuggle your face back home from the temple.

But you know, in many places in India.. especially north east side.. women didn’t wear blouses and would just drape the saree like that. Now they do, but there was a time they didn’t. I think Bengali widows too.

Among Pahadis too, they were very casual about nudity. (I think, part of the reason is people did bathe publicly like waterfalls and rivers.. so tujhe bulayin meri bahinen is not an exaggeration; I know people in the west get bothered by breast feeding - but in India I have always seen women breastfeed publicly, covering a bit under their saree or dupatta - but people aren’t offended by it, as if motherhood transforms a woman into a non sexual being).

I was talking about Satyam Shivam Sundaram and the whole shy sanctimonious thing with Rupa when she barely had anything on xD .

But Yeah . .... I've seen a couple of women from that generation who didn't wear blouses when I went to our ancestral village as a kid. It was actually a white woman who thought the Indian way of wearing the saree was inappropriate and decided to fold in a blouse and an underskirt into the drapery .

Women used to breastfeed on public transport until like maybe 10 yrs ago. I think social media and mobile phones with cameras made people wary. I remember sharing a seat with a lady on my way back from school. She had a baby with her . Out of nowhere she smiled to me and said "He's hungry". That's when I realised she had unhooked her blouse and had let the baby latch on . I wouldn't have noticed if she hadn't told me. I'd never have the nerve to do it though. I might forget to put it back in and walk around like that.lol

@ bold. Clothes wise yeah it's not. But even in places where women bathe in a stream or whatever, they usually go in groups. One woman dancing around in a wet khadi cloth would definitely be frowned upon 😆.. The problem with that scene is the 'gaze'. It's obvious tht Raj Kapoor was using the rural setting as an excuse to titillate. He did the same with Zeenat in Satyam Shivam. It's dishonest. They'd have never had a sex scene or even kissing back then but they snuck in plenty of sexuality using the waterfall proxy. "Hey we'll show you tits ... but only if you keep quiet and pretend this scene is all about the woman's concern for her hygiene "

.

Ah yes.. that’s true. Sexual imagery is used to titillate and guess what. se* sells.

I also often wonder what actual attire for women used to be like in India originally. I think it’s only because of invasions women had to cover up more because they were vulnerable.

Also sarees actually show more body than stuff like t shirt and jeans.. and salwar suit etc came later on.

How was Kareena’s attire in Asoka? I think they did wear skimpy blouses back then.. and there were no bras I believe. So those kind of blouses make sense.

Here in Kerala ,there was this movement called Achippudava samaram in the late 19th century. It was basically a resistance movement against the dress code when allowed only savarna women to cover their breasts. A group of women from the Ezhava caste decided to wear that plain white mundu with the golden border ( like what Priety Zinta wears in The Last Lear) the way Nair women wore them. There's another version which says a woman was stopped and abused in a market place for covering her breasts and that resulted in the movement. Anyway they fought for their right to cover up.

Kareena looked really pretty in those clothes from Ashoka :D. There must have been DIY bras back then. Or some kind of padding. Again ,it wasn't a question of how revealing the clothes were. There was gender based segregation so women didn't usually appear in 'public ' much and even when they did they used stoles and chador like things . Class and caste matter there though, only upper class women could afford to be that territorial. Yes Invasions must have made it more rigid.

Most women who say Western clothes are inappropriate walk around showing their bellies all the way down to the trail, in their sarees. The saree can be pretty vulgar if you don't know how to wear it to suit your body type.
