Only Karan Johar would name a character after shit.

Poo? Seriously, what was he thinking?

because it defines Kareena's acting, expressions, and dialogue delivery.

I think the shortening of her name to something ridiculous was for comedic value, sure, but also to emphasize her comfort in the new spaces she frequented (and, I suppose, ruled over) in London. Really, a big purpose of Kareena's character in that movie--other than as the vehicle that gets Hrithik's character back into Rahul/Anjali's house--is to contrast her with Anjali.

On one hand, ten years later, Anjali longs for the homeland. She is 'insecure' in her position in London, does not really get along with the neighbors, and worries her son will grow up not appreciating his heritage/roots. In some respects, this has changed her. Poo contrasts with this, on the other hand, because her character really has not changed since the Chandni Chowk days. Just like then, she's still ruling her fiefdom with her posse of yes men, and she's secure in how she balances her heritage with 'fitting in' to a new, foreign land. Both characters show different avenues for remaining true to yourself.

In his own right, Rahul is slightly embarrassed by them both. The neighbors' criticism of Anjali gets to him, whereas Poo's clothing is their primary point of contention. Concerning the latter, I know those concerns about 'westernized' girls being corrupted, with dress being an easy manifestation of this, was a frequent debate around this time--still is, really. With hindsight though, Poo's perspective has aged better than Rahul's.

Different generations are a big emphasis of this movie, not just in the characters themselves, but in how KJo cast them. You had the legends (Bachchans), the superstar jodi (SRK and Kajol), and the up-and-coming stars (Hrithik and Kareena). Naturally, the youngest pairing navigates the divides between India and 'the West' (London, here) with more ease. Heck, even their songs are influenced more by Western-style fashion and pop music.

Could have been worse. Like what if Poo had felt London was a very long word and had to be shortened ,like her name ?

Those were different times, people just looked at it as shortening of the name
